- ๐ง Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood. If it is completely full, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the calipers to prevent overflow.
- ๐ Replace front brake pads as a complete axle set. Do both front wheels, never just one side.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use the 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet. Loosening them while the tires are on the ground keeps the wheels from spinning.
- Break loose before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Canyon at the front crossmember or approved front jacking point.
- Place jack stands under the approved front frame support points.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands, then lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack nearby as a backup support, but do not rely on it alone.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 22mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the frame area as an added safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Look at the caliper, rotor, brake hose, and pad position before taking anything apart.
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves while inspecting the brake area.
- If the rotor has deep grooves, heavy rust scaling, or vibration was felt while braking, the rotors should be resurfaced or replaced along with the pads.
- A rotor is the round metal disc the brake pads squeeze to stop the truck.
Step 5: Remove the Brake Caliper Bolts
- Use an 18mm socket with the 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the two front caliper slide pin bolts.
- If the slide pin turns with the bolt, hold the pin with an 18mm wrench while loosening the bolt with the 18mm socket.
- A slide pin is the smooth pin that lets the caliper move side to side as the pads wear.
Step 6: Lift the Caliper Off the Bracket
- Use the small flathead screwdriver carefully between the pad and rotor to create a little space if the caliper is tight.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket by hand.
- Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
- Protect the brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Pull the old inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the small flathead screwdriver to remove the old metal pad clips from the bracket.
- These clips are called abutment clips; they help the brake pads slide smoothly and quietly.
Step 8: Clean the Caliper Bracket
- Place a catch pan under the brake area.
- Use the brake cleaner spray nozzle to spray the caliper bracket and pad contact areas.
- Use the wire brush to clean rust and dirt where the pad clips sit.
- Wipe the area with shop towels.
- Do not spray brake cleaner on painted surfaces.
Step 9: Install the New Brake Hardware
- Snap the new front brake hardware clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the clips.
- Use only a small amount. Do not get lubricant on the brake pad friction material or rotor face.
- Friction material is the rough pad surface that presses against the rotor.
Step 10: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the brake caliper compression tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Compress slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood for rising fluid level.
- If fluid gets close to overflowing, stop and remove a small amount with a clean suction tool.
Step 11: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pads sit squarely in the new hardware clips and can move slightly by hand.
- If the pads bind, use the wire brush to clean the bracket contact points again.
- Pads should slide, not jam.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the bungee cord and lower the caliper over the new pads by hand.
- Start both caliper slide pin bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 18mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the caliper slide pin bolts.
- Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench with the 18mm socket to tighten the caliper slide pin bolts to Torque to 74 Nm (55 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 12 on the other front wheel.
- Use the same 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, brake caliper compression tool, wire brush, and brake lubricant.
- Always complete both front sides before driving.
Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Install each front wheel onto the hub by hand.
- Thread the lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 22mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- A star pattern means tightening across the wheel instead of going in a circle, which helps the wheel sit flat.
Step 15: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands, then lower your Canyon until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 22mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
- Lower the truck fully after the lug nuts are torqued.
Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
- Do not skip this step. The pedal may go very low on the first push after pad replacement.

- โ Check the brake fluid level and adjust it to the correct mark if needed.
- ๐ Look around both front calipers for leaks or twisted brake hoses.
- ๐งช Test the brake pedal before driving. It should feel firm and steady.
