  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. Wheel chocks are wedges that help stop the car from rolling.

  • 🧴 Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir. If the fluid is already near MAX, remove a small amount with a clean fluid extractor before compressing the caliper piston.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about half a turn.
  • Do this while the front tires are still on the ground so the wheels do not spin.
  • Loosen only, do not remove.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
  • Raise the front of your Accord until both front tires are off the ground.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Lower the car gently onto the jack stands.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle shake by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels.
  • Slide one wheel under the side of the car as a backup safety measure.

Step 4: Inspect the Front Brakes

  • Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before touching the brake parts.
  • Look at the rotor surface. The rotor is the round metal disc the brake pads squeeze.
  • If the rotor is deeply grooved, cracked, heavily rusted, or the car had brake vibration, replace or resurface the rotors too.
  • Check that the rubber brake hose is not cracked, twisted, or leaking.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Bolt

  • Use a 17mm open-end wrench to hold the caliper slide pin steady. The slide pin lets the caliper move smoothly as the brakes apply.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower caliper bolt.
  • Set the bolt somewhere clean so dirt does not get on the threads.

Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up

  • Use a flathead screwdriver gently between the old outer pad and rotor if the caliper is tight.
  • Swing the caliper upward on the upper slide pin.
  • Use a brake caliper hanger hook to support the caliper if it will not stay up.
  • Do not stretch, twist, or pull on the brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Pads

  • Pull the old inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver gently if a pad is stuck in the metal clips.
  • Note where any wear indicator tab is positioned so the new pad is installed the same way.
  • Take a photo before removing parts.

Step 8: Replace the Pad Hardware Clips

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to lift the old metal pad clips out of the caliper bracket.
  • Spray the bracket contact areas with brake cleaner aerosol.
  • Wipe the bracket clean using shop rags.
  • Install the new clips from the front brake pad hardware kit in the same positions.
  • These clips help the pads slide smoothly and prevent noise.

Step 9: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston. The piston is the round part that pushes the pad into the rotor.
  • Use a C-clamp or disc brake piston compression tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston so it does not overflow.
  • If fluid rises too high, remove a small amount carefully before continuing.

Step 10: Lubricate the New Pads

  • Apply a very thin coat of brake lubricant to the metal ears of the new pads where they touch the hardware clips.
  • Use nitrile gloves to keep grease off the pad friction surface.
  • Do not put lubricant on the rotor or the part of the pad that contacts the rotor.
  • A thin film is enough.

Step 11: Install the New Pads

  • Slide the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure both pads sit flat in the hardware clips.
  • Confirm the pads can move slightly by hand. They should not be jammed tight.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bolt

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads by hand.
  • Use a 17mm open-end wrench to hold the slide pin steady.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to thread in the lower caliper bolt by hand first.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench rated 20-150 ft-lbs with the 12mm socket to tighten the lower caliper bolt to Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 12 on the other front brake assembly.
  • Front brake pads must be replaced in pairs so braking stays even.

Step 14: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Place each front wheel back on the hub by hand.
  • Start all lug nuts by hand to avoid damaging the threads.
  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 15: Lower and Torque the Wheels

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise your Accord slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle until the tires just touch the ground.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench rated 20-150 ft-lbs with the 19mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
  • Lower the vehicle fully.

Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Before starting to drive, press the brake pedal slowly several times.
  • The pedal may go low at first, then become firm.
  • Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.

Step 17: Check Brake Fluid

  • Use shop rags around the brake fluid reservoir to protect painted surfaces.
  • Check the brake fluid level under the hood.
  • Add DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below the MIN mark.
  • Make sure the reservoir cap is fully tightened.

  • ✅ Start your Accord and confirm the brake pedal is firm.
  • ✅ Move slowly in a safe area and test the brakes at walking speed.
  • ✅ Listen for grinding, scraping, or clicking sounds.
  • ✅ Recheck for brake fluid leaks around both front calipers.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after a short drive: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 100-200 miles unless needed for safety.
