📋 Before You Begin
- Park your F-150 on level ground and shift the transmission to Park.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir on the driver-side rear area of the engine bay.
- Check the brake fluid level. If it is near the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean fluid syringe before compressing the caliper pistons.
- A brake caliper is the part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor to stop the truck.
- A torque wrench tightens bolts to a measured specification so they are not too loose or too tight.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use the 21mm socket with the 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about one turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen before lifting.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame/jacking area to lift the front of the F-150.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails.
- Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands.
- Gently shake the truck by hand to make sure it is stable before continuing.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.
- Keep the lug nuts together in a safe spot.
Step 4: Turn the Steering for Better Access
- Turn the steering wheel toward the side you are working on.
- This gives you more room to reach the caliper bolts.
- Use a shop towel to wipe loose dirt from the brake area.
Step 5: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Look at the brake rotor surface. The rotor is the round metal disc behind the wheel.
- If the rotor has deep grooves, heavy rust, cracks, or shaking was felt while braking, replace or resurface the rotors before installing new pads.
- Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean loose dust from the caliper area.
Step 6: Remove the Caliper Guide Pin Bolts
- Use the 13mm socket with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide pin bolts.
- Guide pins let the caliper slide evenly as the brakes wear.
- Hold the caliper steady while removing the last bolt so it does not fall.
Step 7: Lift and Support the Caliper
- Carefully slide the caliper off the brake pads and rotor by hand.
- If it sticks, use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry between the old pad and rotor.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension using a brake caliper hanger hook.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 8: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Pull the inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the flat-head screwdriver to remove the old pad hardware clips if needed.
- Use the small wire brush to clean the areas where the clips sit.
- Spray the bracket lightly with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop towels.
Step 9: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- The caliper pistons are round metal pieces that push the pads into the rotor.
- Place one old brake pad against the pistons.
- Use a C-clamp or disc brake piston compressor tool to slowly push the pistons fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing. Stop if fluid is close to overflowing.
- Go slowly to protect seals.
Step 10: Install New Hardware Clips
- Install the new front brake pad hardware kit clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure each clip is seated flat and fully snapped into place.
- Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the clips.
- Do not get lubricant on the rotor or pad friction material.
Step 11: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new front brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- The pads should move smoothly in the clips without being forced.
- If they bind, remove them and recheck the hardware clip seating.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the caliper from the brake caliper hanger hook.
- Slide the caliper over the new pads by hand.
- Install the upper and lower guide pin bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 13mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the guide pin bolts to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 12 on the opposite front brake.
- Always replace front brake pads as a complete axle set, not just one side.
Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Put each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
- Install the lug nuts finger-tight first.
- Use the 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 15: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the F-150 slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the truck fully to the ground.
- Use the 21mm socket with the 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before starting or driving, press the brake pedal slowly 5-10 times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back against the new pads.
- If the pedal stays soft or sinks, do not drive the truck.
Step 17: Check Brake Fluid Level
- Use a shop towel to clean around the brake fluid reservoir cap.
- Check the fluid level and add DOT 4 brake fluid only if needed.
- Keep the level between the MIN and MAX marks.
- Reinstall the reservoir cap securely by hand.

- ✅ Start the F-150 and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm.
- ✅ Test the brakes at very low speed in a safe area before driving normally.
