- Park your TITAN on level ground.
- Shift the transmission to Park.
- Set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir on the driver-side rear area of the engine bay.
- Use shop towels around the reservoir cap area to catch any overflow.
- If the brake fluid is already near the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the pistons.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about half a turn.
- Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen first, lift second.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the front center jacking area or the front frame lift point.
- Raise the front of your TITAN high enough for both front wheels to come off the ground.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame rails.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Lightly shake the truck by hand to confirm it is stable before working near the wheels.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.
- Slide one wheel under the frame as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Setup
- Look at the brake caliper, brake hose, brake rotor, and pad position before taking anything apart.
- The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.
- The rotor is the large round metal disc behind the wheel.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently check that the caliper can move slightly on its slide pins.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Bolt
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower caliper slide pin bolt.
- A slide pin lets the caliper move in and out as the brakes wear.
- If the pin spins while loosening, hold the slide pin flats carefully while loosening the bolt.
Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up
- Use your hands to rotate the caliper upward away from the brake pads.
- If it is tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently between the old pad and rotor to create a little space.
- Support the caliper with a bungee cord so it does not pull on the brake hose.
- Do not twist, stretch, or kink the brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Pull the old inner and outer brake pads out by hand.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to carefully remove the old metal pad clips from the caliper bracket.
- The metal clips are called abutment clips. They help the pads slide smoothly and quietly.
- Note the position of any wear indicator tab before removing the pads.
Step 8: Clean the Caliper Bracket
- Use brake cleaner spray to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
- Wipe the area with shop towels.
- Do not breathe brake dust. Wear your dust mask.
- Do not spray brake cleaner on painted body panels.
Step 9: Install the New Brake Hardware
- Install the new clips from the front brake hardware kit by hand into the caliper bracket.
- Make sure each clip sits fully flat and locked into place.
- Apply a thin layer of disc brake caliper grease to the pad contact points on the clips.
- Do not get grease on the rotor face or pad friction material.
- A thin coat is enough.
Step 10: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Check the brake fluid reservoir again before compressing the pistons.
- Use a brake caliper piston compressor tool against the old brake pad or directly against the pistons.
- Slowly press the pistons back into the caliper until fully seated.
- The pistons are the round parts inside the caliper that push the pads into the rotor.
- Go slowly so brake fluid does not overflow from the reservoir.
Step 11: Install the New Front Brake Pads
- Install the new inner and outer pads by hand into the caliper bracket.
- Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
- Seat the pad ears fully into the new hardware clips.
- If equipped, position the wear indicator tab the same way it was on the old pad.
Step 12: Lower the Caliper Over the New Pads
- Remove the bungee cord from the caliper.
- Lower the caliper carefully over the new pads by hand.
- If the caliper will not fit, use the brake caliper piston compressor tool again to make sure the pistons are fully seated.
Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bolt
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to install the lower caliper slide pin bolt.
- Tighten the caliper slide pin bolt to Torque to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs).
- Make sure the brake hose is routed naturally and is not twisted.
Step 14: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Move to the other front wheel area.
- Use the same 14mm socket, flat-blade screwdriver, brake caliper piston compressor tool, and bungee cord.
- Repeat Steps 4 through 13 on the opposite side.
- Always replace front brake pads as a complete axle set, meaning both front sides together.
Step 15: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place each front wheel back onto the hub.
- Start all lug nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 16: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the truck until the tires just touch the ground.
- Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 21mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Tighten the wheel lug nuts to Torque to 133 Nm (98 ft-lbs).
- Lower the truck fully to the ground.
Step 17: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Sit in the driver seat.
- Press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
- Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.
Step 18: Check Brake Fluid Level
- Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir.
- Add DOT 3 brake fluid if the level is below the proper range.
- Use shop towels to clean any spilled fluid immediately.
- Brake fluid damages paint, so avoid spills.

- ✅ Start your TITAN and press the brake pedal again. The pedal should feel firm, not soft or sinking.
