Replacing the front brake pads involves lifting your Explorer, removing both front wheels, retracting the caliper pistons, and installing new pads and hardware. Replace the pads on both sides so braking remains balanced.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚙 Park your Explorer on level pavement, select Park, shut off the engine, and apply the parking brake.
  • 🛞 Place rubber wheel chocks tightly behind both rear tires.
  • 🌡️ Let the brakes cool completely before touching them.
  • 🧴 Check the brake-fluid reservoir under the hood. If it is near the MAX line, remove a small amount with the brake-fluid extractor so piston retraction does not cause an overflow.
  • 📱 No infotainment setting, scan tool command, or electronic parking-brake service mode is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut approximately one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the nuts while the tires are supporting the vehicle.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use the floor jack at the reinforced lifting point identified in the owner’s manual.
  • Position a jack stand beneath an approved reinforced support point, then lower the vehicle gently onto it.
  • Repeat on the opposite side using the floor jack and second jack stand.
  • Use your gloved hands to push the body lightly and confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels

  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Use both gloved hands to remove each wheel and place it flat away from your work area.

Step 4: Inspect the Brakes

  • Use the non-chlorinated brake cleaner and nylon brake-cleaning brush to remove loose dust from the caliper area.
  • Inspect each rotor for deep grooves, cracks, heavy rust, or blue heat spots.
  • Use your gloved hands to check the caliper hose for cracking, wetness, or twisting.
  • If either rotor is below its stamped minimum thickness, both front rotors must be replaced before driving.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Guide-Pin Bolts

  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • If a guide pin turns, use the 17mm open-end wrench to hold its flat section while loosening the bolt.
  • A guide pin is the smooth sliding pin that lets the caliper center itself over the rotor.

Step 6: Support the Caliper

  • Use your gloved hands to lift the caliper away from the pads.
  • Use mechanic’s wire to suspend the caliper from a sturdy suspension component.
  • Keep all weight and tension off the rubber brake hose.
  • Never hang a caliper by its hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Use your gloved hands to slide the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully release the stainless-steel abutment clips.
  • Abutment clips are the small metal guides on which the brake-pad tabs slide.
  • Use the nylon brake-cleaning brush and brake cleaner to clean the clip mounting surfaces.
  • Do not remove the caliper bracket for a pad-only replacement.

Step 8: Retract the Caliper Piston

  • Place an old brake pad against the piston using your gloved hands.
  • Use the disc brake piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the brake-fluid extractor if the level approaches the top.
  • Stop if the piston binds, tilts, or requires excessive force. This can indicate a seized caliper.

Step 9: Install New Hardware and Pads

  • Use your gloved hands to press the new abutment clips fully into the caliper bracket.
  • Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad tabs using a gloved fingertip.
  • Keep lubricant off the rotor and all pad friction material.
  • Use your gloved hands to install the new inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Confirm the pads slide freely in the new clips without excessive looseness.

Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the mechanic’s wire and guide the caliper over the new pads using both gloved hands.
  • Make sure the rubber guide-pin boots are seated and not pinched.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten both guide-pin bolts to 53 Nm (39 ft-lbs).
  • If a guide pin turns, hold its flat section with the 17mm open-end wrench while using the torque wrench.

Step 11: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Use the same 14mm socket, 17mm open-end wrench, piston compression tool, and cleaning tools to replace the pads and hardware on the other front wheel.
  • Replace all front pads as one axle set, even if one side appears less worn.

Step 12: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Use both gloved hands to position each wheel on the hub.
  • Install the wheel nuts by hand, then snug them in a star pattern with the 19mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet.
  • Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower your Explorer to the ground.
  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Seat the Brake Pads

  • With the engine off, use your foot to press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
  • Do not move the vehicle until the pedal feels firm and consistent.
  • Use the brake-fluid extractor only if the reservoir is above MAX, then secure the reservoir cap by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and confirm the brake pedal remains firm.
  • ✅ Check around both calipers and the brake-fluid reservoir for leakage.
  • ✅ Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area.
  • ✅ Follow the pad manufacturer’s bedding procedure. If none is supplied, make 6-8 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h, allowing brief cooling between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking and holding the pedal down after a hard stop during the first 300 km.
  • ✅ Recheck wheel-nut torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
  • ✅ Investigate pulling, grinding, fluid leakage, warning lights, or a soft pedal before normal driving.
