  • ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Park your F-150 on firm, level ground. Shift to Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the engine.
  • ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Allow the brakes to cool completely before touching them.
  • ๐Ÿงฑ Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
  • ๐Ÿ” Open the hood and check the brake-fluid reservoir. Leave the cap resting loosely over the opening to limit contamination.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Inspect the front rotors during disassembly. Deep grooves, cracks, severe rust, heat spots, or thickness below the specification cast into the rotor require rotor service.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-half turn.
  • Keep the tires touching the ground during this step so the wheels cannot rotate.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use the 3-ton floor jack beneath the front frame crossmember to raise your F-150.
  • Position the 3-ton jack stands beneath the left and right frame rails, then lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Leave the floor jack lightly contacting the crossmember as secondary support.
  • Gently push the body to confirm that it is stable before continuing.

Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and slide them flat beneath the frame as an additional safety measure.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Use the flashlight to check the brake hose, caliper, and rotor for leaks, cracks, or damage.
  • Check both pad surfaces for uneven wear. A large difference may indicate a seized slide pin or caliper piston.
  • Do not continue with pads alone if brake fluid is leaking or the rotor is cracked.

Step 5: Remove the First Caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel for easier access to the caliper bolts.
  • Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • If a guide pin rotates, hold its flat section with the 18mm open-end wrench while loosening the bolt.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use the brake caliper hanger to suspend it from the suspension.
  • A caliper guide pin allows the caliper to slide sideways and apply both pads evenly.

Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver to lift the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless-steel pad clips from the bracket.
  • Place the removed components in the plastic drain pan.
  • Compare the old inner and outer pads. Tapered or severely uneven wear requires checking the caliper slides and piston operation.

Step 7: Clean and Lubricate the Contact Points

  • Wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use the wire brush and aerosol brake cleaner to clean the bracket surfaces beneath the pad clips.
  • Wipe residue away with shop towels.
  • Install the new brake pad hardware by hand.
  • Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad tabs contact the hardware.
  • Do not place lubricant on the rotor or pad friction material.
  • More grease is not better.

Step 8: Compress the Caliper Pistons

  • Place an old brake pad against both pistons inside the caliper.
  • Use the dual-piston brake caliper compression tool to push both pistons inward slowly and evenly.
  • A compression tool presses the pistons back into the caliper so the thicker new pads will fit.
  • Check the reservoir repeatedly. Use the brake-fluid syringe to remove excess fluid if the level approaches the top.
  • Stop if either piston binds, tilts, or will not retract smoothly.

Step 9: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
  • Make sure each pad tab is fully seated in its hardware and can move without binding.
  • Keep the pad friction surfaces clean and dry.

Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Place the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 13mm socket, 18mm open-end wrench, and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten each guide-pin bolt to 36 Nm (27 ft-lbs).
  • Confirm that the brake hose follows its natural route and does not rub the wheel or suspension.

Step 11: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 10 on the other front brake assembly using the same listed tools.
  • Always replace front brake pads as a complete axle set.

Step 12: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to snug the nuts in a crossing pattern.
  • Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly, remove the 3-ton jack stands, and lower the tires to the ground.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crossing pattern to 203 Nm (150 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Restore Brake Pedal Pressure

  • With the engine off, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
  • Do not move your F-150 until the pedal feels firm and consistent.
  • Check the reservoir and use DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below the marked range.
  • Secure the reservoir cap by hand.

  • โœ… Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal. The pedal should remain steady rather than sinking toward the floor.
  • ๐Ÿ” Check around both front calipers and the reservoir for brake-fluid leaks.
  • ๐Ÿš— Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
  • ๐Ÿ›‘ Follow the brake pad manufacturer's bedding procedure. Avoid panic stops and prolonged pedal pressure with very hot new brakes.
  • ๐Ÿ”ง Recheck wheel-nut torque to 203 Nm (150 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
  • โš ๏ธ If the pedal stays soft, the truck pulls strongly, or grinding continues, stop driving and inspect the system.
