📋 Before You Begin
- Park your F-150 on firm, level pavement. Select Park, apply the parking brake and switch off the engine.
- Place wheel chocks firmly behind both rear tires.
- Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it’s near the maximum line, remove a small amount with a clean fluid syringe before compressing the pistons.
- Keep the reservoir cap resting loosely in place to prevent contamination.
- Don’t add brake fluid before compressing the pistons. The fluid level normally rises as they retract.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the front wheel nuts
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut approximately one-quarter turn.
- Leave the wheels on the ground while loosening them.
Step 2: Raise and support the front
- Use the 3-ton floor jack at the approved front lifting point.
- Position both 3-ton jack stands beneath the front frame rails, then lower the truck onto them.
- Gently push the truck before working. It must remain completely stable.
Step 3: Remove both front wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove each wheel and slide it beneath the frame as an additional safety measure.
Step 4: Inspect the brakes before disassembly
- Check both rotor faces for deep grooves, cracks, heavy rust or blue heat spots.
- Compare the inner and outer pad thickness. Major unevenness can indicate seized slide pins or a sticking caliper.
- Check the rubber brake hose and caliper for wetness. Any brake-fluid leak must be repaired before driving.
Step 5: Remove the caliper guide-pin bolts
- Turn the steering wheel to improve access to the caliper being serviced.
- Use the 13mm socket and ratchet to remove the lower and upper caliper guide-pin bolts.
- If a guide pin rotates, hold its flats with the 18mm open-end wrench while loosening the bolt.
- The guide pins allow the caliper to move sideways and apply both pads evenly.
Step 6: Lift and support the caliper
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver carefully between the old pad and rotor to create slight clearance.
- Lift the caliper away from the bracket without pulling or twisting the brake hose.
- Support it from the suspension with the brake caliper hanger.
- Don’t disconnect the brake hose. The system shouldn’t require bleeding for a pad-only replacement.
Step 7: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
- Note each pad’s position before removing the stainless abutment clips.
- Abutment clips are the small metal guides on which the pad ends slide.
- Place removed parts in the drain pan to contain brake dust and residue.
Step 8: Clean and inspect the bracket
- Spray the bracket contact areas with non-chlorinated brake cleaner.
- Use the small wire brush to remove corrosion beneath the hardware clips.
- Check that both guide pins move smoothly and that their rubber boots aren’t torn.
- Don’t grind or remove metal from the bracket.
Step 9: Compress the dual caliper pistons
- Place an old brake pad across both pistons.
- Use the dual-piston brake caliper compression tool to push both pistons inward slowly and evenly.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing. Remove excess fluid if it approaches the top.
- Stop if either piston binds, tilts or requires excessive force.
- Slow pressure protects seals and prevents fluid overflow.
Step 10: Install the new hardware
- Press the new abutment clips fully into the cleaned bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake grease where the pad ears contact the clips.
- Keep grease off the rotor and pad friction material.
Step 11: Install the new pads
- Slide the new inner and outer pads squarely into the bracket by hand.
- Confirm each pad moves freely without excessive looseness.
- Install any supplied wear indicators or shims in the same orientation as the original components.
Step 12: Reinstall the caliper
- Remove the brake caliper hanger and place the caliper over the new pads.
- Ensure neither guide-pin boot is twisted or trapped.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 13mm socket, 18mm open-end wrench and torque wrench. Tighten the lower bolt first, followed by the upper bolt.

Step 13: Repeat on the other side
- Use the same tools and procedure on the opposite front brake.
- Compare both sides for similar pad wear, smooth guide-pin movement and intact boots.
Step 14: Reinstall the wheels
- Fit each wheel and install all lug nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise the truck, remove the jack stands and lower the tires onto the ground.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque the lug nuts to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal repeatedly until it becomes firm. The first few strokes may travel close to the floor.
- Check the brake-fluid level and adjust it to the correct mark using only the fluid specified on the reservoir cap.
- Inspect around both front calipers for leaks and confirm the brake hoses aren’t twisted.
- Start the engine and press the pedal again. It should remain firm and consistent.
- Perform a slow test stop in a clear area before entering traffic.
- Bed the pads using the pad manufacturer’s instructions. A typical street-pad routine uses several moderate stops with cooling time between them.
- Avoid hard emergency-style stops and holding the hot brakes at a complete stop during the initial bedding cycle.
- Stop driving if the truck pulls, grinds, produces a soft pedal or develops excessive heat at one wheel.
