📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Corolla on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🛑 Set the parking brake before lifting the vehicle.
  • 🧤 Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • 📘 A caliper is the clamp-shaped brake part that squeezes the pads against the rotor.
  • 📘 A rotor is the round metal disc behind the wheel that the brake pads squeeze.
  • 📘 A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct force so they are not too loose or too tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to slightly loosen the front wheel lug nuts.
  • Only loosen them about 1/2 turn while the tires are still on the ground.
  • Break them loose before lifting.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point or the correct front side pinch weld jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Lightly shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable before removing the wheels.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.
  • Slide one wheel under the side of the car as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Use safety glasses and look at the caliper, rotor, brake hose, and pad wear.
  • Check that the brake hose is not cracked, twisted, or leaking.
  • If the rotor has deep grooves, heavy rust, or vibration symptoms, the rotors should be serviced or replaced with the pads.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Slide Pin Bolt

  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the lower front caliper slide pin bolt.
  • The slide pin bolt holds the moving part of the caliper in place.
  • Keep the bolt clean and set it aside.

Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up

  • Use a flathead screwdriver medium gently between the caliper and old pad if the caliper is snug.
  • Swing the caliper upward like opening a door.
  • Use a brake caliper hanger hook to support the caliper if needed.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Pull the old inner and outer brake pads out by hand.
  • If stuck, use a flathead screwdriver medium to gently pry them out.
  • Notice how the wear indicator tab is positioned before removing the pads.
  • Take a phone photo first.

Step 8: Remove and Replace the Pad Hardware

  • Use a flathead screwdriver medium to remove the old metal pad clips from the caliper bracket.
  • Spray the bracket contact areas with brake cleaner aerosol.
  • Wipe the area clean with clean shop rags.
  • Install the new clips from the front brake pad hardware kit by pressing them into place by hand.
  • The pad clips guide the brake pads and help them move smoothly.

Step 9: Apply Brake Lubricant

  • Use a small amount of brake lubricant on the pad ears where they touch the new hardware clips.
  • Do not put lubricant on the pad friction surface or rotor face.
  • Use clean shop rags to wipe off any accidental excess.

Step 10: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir.
  • Use your eyes to check the fluid level. If it is near the top, remove a small amount before compressing the piston.
  • Use a brake caliper compression tool to slowly push the caliper piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Go slowly so brake fluid returns to the reservoir without overflowing.
  • The piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.

Step 11: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad ears sit properly in the new hardware clips.
  • The pads should slide in with light hand pressure.
  • If they are very tight, remove them and check the clip position.

Step 12: Lower the Caliper Back Into Place

  • Swing the caliper down over the new pads by hand.
  • If it will not fit, use the brake caliper compression tool again to make sure the piston is fully seated.
  • Do not force the caliper with a hammer.

Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Slide Pin Bolt

  • Thread the lower caliper slide pin bolt in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the bolt.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)

Step 14: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Use the same tools and steps on the other front brake assembly.
  • Always replace front brake pads in pairs, left and right together.

Step 15: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Place each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 16: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the car slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs)

Step 17: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times.
  • The pedal will feel soft at first, then become firm.
  • Do not drive until the brake pedal feels firm.

Step 18: Check Brake Fluid Level

  • Use your eyes to check the brake fluid reservoir level.
  • The level should be between the MIN and MAX marks.
  • Use clean shop rags to wipe any spilled fluid from the reservoir area.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Corolla and press the brake pedal again. It should stay firm.
  • ✅ Test the brakes at very low speed in a safe area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Listen for scraping, grinding, or clicking noises.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive.
  • ✅ Bed in the new pads: make 8-10 gentle stops from about 30 mph to 5 mph, allowing cooling time between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless it is an emergency.
