- 🚫 Do not set the parking brake for this front brake job unless needed for safety; the rear wheels are chocked.
- 🧴 Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir. If it is at the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean siphon before compressing the caliper piston.
- 🔍 A caliper piston is the round metal part inside the brake caliper that pushes the brake pad against the rotor.
- 🧰 A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct tightness, which prevents loose or over-tightened parts.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about half a turn.
- Do this while the tires are still on the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Loosen only. Do not remove yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the floor jack 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Highlander at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands 3-ton minimum under the front side support points.
- Slowly lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and gently shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack 3-ton minimum lightly touching the lift point as extra backup.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the vehicle edge as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Put on safety glasses, nitrile gloves, and a dust mask.
- Look at the front brake caliper, rotor, pads, and rubber brake hose.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver gently if needed to look through the caliper opening.
- If the rotor is deeply grooved, cracked, blue from heat, or below minimum thickness, replace or resurface the rotor before installing new pads.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Bolt
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room on the side you are working on.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower front caliper slide pin bolt.
- A slide pin lets the caliper move smoothly as the pads wear.
- Keep the bolt clean and set it aside.
Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up
- Use your hands to rotate the caliper upward off the brake pads.
- If it is tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently between the old pad and rotor to create a little space.
- Do not pry hard against the rotor surface.
- Support the caliper so it does not pull on the brake hose.
- Never let the caliper hang by the hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Slide the old inner and outer brake pads out by hand.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to carefully remove the old stainless pad clips from the caliper bracket.
- Pad clips are small metal guides that help the pads slide quietly and evenly.
- Compare the old pads to the new front brake pad set to confirm the shape matches.
Step 8: Clean the Caliper Bracket
- Use the brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
- Use the wire brush to remove rust from the areas where the pad clips sit.
- Do not spray brake cleaner on painted surfaces or rubber parts longer than necessary.
- Clean brackets prevent squeaks and uneven wear.
Step 9: Install New Brake Hardware
- Install the new clips from the front brake hardware kit by hand into the caliper bracket.
- Make sure each clip sits flat and fully locked in place.
- Apply a very thin layer of brake caliper slide pin grease to the pad ears where they touch the clips.
- Do not put grease on the brake pad friction material or rotor face.
Step 10: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the C-clamp 6-inch or brake caliper piston compressor to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Go slowly and check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood so it does not overflow.
- If fluid rises too high, use shop towels around the reservoir and remove excess fluid carefully with a clean siphon if available.
Step 11: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new inner and outer pads from the front brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- The pads should slide smoothly in the clips without forcing them.
- If they bind, remove them and recheck clip seating and rust buildup.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper
- Rotate the caliper back down over the new pads by hand.
- Line up the lower slide pin bolt hole.
- Install the lower caliper bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench 10-150 ft-lb to tighten the caliper slide pin bolt to Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Use the same tools and repeat Steps 4 through 12 on the other front wheel.
- Always replace front brake pads in pairs so braking stays even.
Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 15: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack 3-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 10-150 ft-lb to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back into position against the new pads.
- Do not drive until the brake pedal feels firm.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir and adjust the level to between MIN and MAX if needed.

- ✅ Start your Highlander and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm and steady.
- ✅ Check both front wheels for any fluid leaks around the brake hoses and calipers.
