- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels so the vehicle cannot roll.
- 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. If it is filled to the very top, remove a small amount before compressing the caliper pistons.
- 📌 A caliper is the clamp that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor. A rotor is the round metal disc behind the wheel.
- 📌 Brake pad hardware means the thin metal clips the pads slide on. Replacing them helps prevent squeaks and uneven wear.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn while the tires are still on the ground.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen before lifting for control.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Outback at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front support points.
- Slowly lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Fluid Level
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Look at the brake fluid reservoir under the hood before pushing the caliper piston back in.
- If fluid is near the top, remove a small amount using a clean fluid-safe suction tool if available.
- Do not spill brake fluid on paint. It can damage the finish.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Slide Bolt
- Work on one side at a time so you can use the other side as a reference.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower caliper slide bolt.
- If the slide pin spins, hold it steady with the 17mm wrench while loosening the bolt with the 14mm socket.
- A slide pin lets the caliper move smoothly as the pads wear.
Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver medium gently between the caliper and outer pad if the caliper is tight.
- Swing the caliper upward on the upper slide pin.
- Use the bungee cord 18-inch to support the caliper from the strut spring.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Use your gloved hands to slide the old inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver medium to carefully pop out the old metal pad clips.
- Use the wire brush small to clean the pad clip mounting areas on the bracket.
- Spray the area with brake cleaner and let it dry.
Step 8: Install the New Pad Hardware
- Use your gloved hands to snap the new front brake pad hardware kit clips into the caliper bracket.
- Make sure each clip sits flat and fully seated.
- Apply a very thin layer of brake caliper slide pin grease only where the pad ears touch the clips.
- Do not put grease on the rotor or pad friction material.
- Use less grease than you think.
Step 9: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the brake caliper piston compressor tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston so it does not overflow.
- A piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the pad into the rotor.
Step 10: Install the New Brake Pads
- Use your gloved hands to install the new inner and outer pads into the caliper bracket.
- Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
- If your pad set includes a wear indicator tab, install it in the same general position as the original pad.
- The pads should slide into place without forcing them.
Step 11: Lower the Caliper and Tighten the Slide Bolt
- Remove the bungee cord 18-inch and swing the caliper down over the new pads.
- Use the 14mm socket to reinstall the lower caliper slide bolt by hand first.
- If the slide pin spins, hold it with the 17mm wrench.
- Use the torque wrench 10-150 ft-lb and 14mm socket to tighten the caliper slide bolt to Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Use the same 14mm socket, 17mm wrench, flat-blade screwdriver medium, wire brush small, and brake caliper piston compressor tool to repeat the process on the opposite front brake.
- Replace pads and hardware on both front wheels as a pair.
Step 13: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place each wheel back on the hub.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket to thread all lug nuts by hand first.
- Snug the lug nuts lightly in a star pattern using the 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet.
Step 14: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise your Outback slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the torque wrench 10-150 ft-lb and 19mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).
Step 15: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
- Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed with the correct brake fluid listed on the reservoir cap.
- ✅ Start the engine and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm, not sink to the floor.
- ✅ Before entering traffic, test the brakes at low speed in a safe area.
- ✅ Bed in the new pads with 8-10 moderate stops from about 30 mph down to 5 mph, allowing a short cooling period between stops.
