🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about 1/2 turn.
- Do this while the tires are still touching the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Loosen only, do not remove yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Tacoma at the front center jacking point on the frame crossmember.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame support points.
- Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands and lightly shake the truck by hand to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching the lift point as backup support.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the frame as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Look at the caliper, brake hose, rotor, and pad thickness before taking anything apart.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Slide Pin Bolt
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower caliper slide pin bolt.
- A slide pin lets the caliper move slightly so both pads press evenly.
- If the slide pin spins, hold the pin flat with needle-nose pliers while loosening the bolt with the 14mm socket.
Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry the caliper upward if it is stuck.
- Swing the caliper up and away from the brake pads.
- Use a brake caliper hanger or bungee cord to support the caliper from the suspension.
- Do not stretch, twist, or kink the rubber brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Pull the old inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver if a pad is stuck in the bracket.
- Remove the old stainless pad clips from the bracket with needle-nose pliers.
- Compare the old pads to the new pads to make sure the shape matches.
Step 8: Clean the Caliper Bracket
- Use the wire brush to clean rust and dirt from the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
- Spray the bracket with brake cleaner aerosol and wipe it with shop towels.
- The new pads should slide smoothly in the bracket. They should not need force.
- Clean brackets help prevent brake squeal.
Step 9: Install the New Pad Hardware
- Install the new clips from the front brake pad hardware kit into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a thin film of brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the clips.
- Do not get lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor surface.
Step 10: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper pistons.
- Use the C-clamp or disc brake piston compressor tool to slowly push the pistons fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing. Use shop towels around the reservoir if needed.
- Compress slowly to avoid damaging seals or overflowing brake fluid.
Step 11: Install the New Brake Pads
- Install the new inner and outer pads from the front brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
- If the pad set includes wear indicators, install them in the same general position as the old pads.
- Use a small amount of brake lubricant only on the metal backing plate contact points, not on the friction surface.
Step 12: Lower the Caliper and Tighten the Slide Pin Bolt
- Remove the brake caliper hanger or bungee cord.
- Swing the caliper down over the new pads by hand.
- Install the lower slide pin bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs to tighten the caliper slide pin bolt to Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 12 on the other front wheel.
- Use the same 14mm socket, flat-blade screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, wire brush, and C-clamp or disc brake piston compressor tool.
- Always replace front brake pads in pairs so braking stays even.
Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 15: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Tacoma until the tires touch the ground and cannot spin.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before moving the truck, sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times.
- The pedal may go low at first. Keep pumping until it feels firm.
- This seats the caliper pistons against the new pads.

- ✅ Check the brake fluid level and make sure it is between the MIN and MAX marks.
- ✅ Start your Tacoma and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm, not spongy.
