๐ Before You Begin

- ๐ Open the brake fluid reservoir cap under the hood and lay a shop towel around it to catch any overflow.

๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about 1/2 turn.
- Do this while the tires are still on the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Loosen first, lift second.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Tacoma
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the front center jacking point on the front crossmember.
- Lift the front of your Tacoma high enough for both front tires to clear the ground.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame rails.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands and lightly shake the truck to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat under the frame area as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use brake cleaner aerosol and shop towels to clean loose dust from the caliper and pad area.
- Look at the rotor surface. If it has deep grooves, cracks, heavy rust ridges, or blue heat spots, the rotors should be serviced or replaced.
- Check both sides because brake wear may not be equal.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Bolt
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower caliper slide bolt.
- The slide bolt lets the caliper move slightly as the pads wear.
- Keep the bolt clean and set it aside.
Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up
- Use a flathead screwdriver gently between the old pad and rotor to create a little clearance.
- Pivot the caliper upward on the upper slide bolt.
- Use a brake caliper hanger hook to support the caliper if it does not stay up securely.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Slide the old inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to gently lift out the stainless pad clips from the bracket.
- Pad clips are small metal guides that help the pads slide smoothly.
- Remember the position of each clip before removing it.
Step 8: Install the New Pad Hardware
- Use brake cleaner aerosol and shop towels to clean the caliper bracket where the clips sit.
- Install the new front brake pad hardware kit clips by pressing them into the same locations as the old clips.
- Apply a thin layer of disc brake caliper grease only where the pad ears touch the clips.
- Do not get grease on the pad friction surface or rotor.
- Grease metal contact points only.
Step 9: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use a C-clamp 6-inch to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood while compressing the piston.
- Use shop towels to catch any overflow immediately.
- Go slowly so the brake fluid moves back without splashing.
Step 10: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new front brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- The pads should move smoothly in the clips without forcing them.
- If a pad is tight, remove it and check clip alignment.
Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper
- Lower the caliper over the new brake pads by hand.
- Install the lower caliper slide bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs to tighten the caliper slide bolt to Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Use the same 14mm socket, flathead screwdriver, C-clamp 6-inch, and brake cleaner aerosol to replace the pads on the other front wheel.
- Always replace front brake pads as a complete axle set, meaning both front sides together.
Step 13: Reinstall the Wheels
- Place each wheel back onto the hub.
- Thread the lug nuts on by hand first.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 14: Lower the Tacoma and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the truck fully to the ground.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
Step 15: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
- Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.
โ After Repair
- โ Check the brake fluid level and set it between the MIN and MAX marks.
- โ Reinstall and tighten the brake fluid reservoir cap by hand.
- โ Start your Tacoma and press the brake pedal again to confirm it stays firm.
- โ Test drive slowly in a safe area and confirm the truck stops straight without noise or pulling.
- โ Bed in the pads by making several gentle stops from about 30 mph, letting the brakes cool briefly between stops.
- โ Avoid hard braking for the first 100-200 miles unless it is an emergency.
- โ Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive using the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs.
