🔧 4Runner - Front Brake Pad Replacement

Your 4Runner uses a four-piston fixed front brake caliper. The pads slide out after removing two retaining pins, so the calipers normally stay bolted in place.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on a level, solid surface and support your 4Runner with jack stands. Never rely only on a floor jack.
  • Brake dust can be harmful. Do not use compressed air or inhale the dust.
  • Do not press the brake pedal while the pads are removed.
  • Brake fluid damages paint. Clean spills immediately with water.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the pistons; remove excess fluid before it overflows.
  • Never allow grease or brake cleaner to contact the pad friction material or rotor faces.
  • Battery disconnection and electronic parking-brake service mode are not required for this front brake repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your 4Runner on level pavement, shift to Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
  • Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
  • Confirm that the replacement pads include the correct shims and wear indicators before removing the old pads.
  • Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is at the MAX line, use a plastic brake-fluid syringe to remove a small amount.
  • Do not leave the reservoir open. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use a 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Do not remove the wheel nuts while your 4Runner is still on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Position the 3-ton floor jack beneath the center of the front suspension crossmember.
  • Raise the front until both tires clear the ground.
  • Place 3-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced frame rails behind the front wheels, then lower your 4Runner onto them.
  • Gently push the body to verify that it is stable before working underneath or beside it.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm deep socket to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Lift off both front wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
  • Complete one brake assembly at a time so the other side remains available as an orientation reference.

Step 4: Inspect the Brakes

  • Use the non-chlorinated brake cleaner and nylon brake-cleaning brush to remove loose dust from the caliper and retaining hardware.
  • Inspect the rotor for deep grooves, blue heat spots, cracks, or a heavy outer ridge. A damaged or undersized rotor must be replaced or professionally measured before installing pads.
  • Inspect the caliper for brake-fluid leakage and torn piston dust boots. Stop the repair if leakage or damaged boots are found.

Step 5: Remove the Pad Retaining Hardware

  • Use needle-nose pliers to remove the small retaining clips from the two brake-pad pins.
  • Hold the anti-rattle spring with one gloved hand. This spring presses against the pads and may move when the pins are removed.
  • Use the 4mm pin punch and 16-ounce ball-peen hammer to tap both retaining pins out of the caliper.
  • Remove the anti-rattle spring and note its installed direction.
  • Photograph the hardware before removal.

Step 6: Remove the Old Pads

  • Use needle-nose pliers to pull the inboard and outboard pads straight out through the rear opening of the caliper.
  • Keep the old pads temporarily; they can protect the pistons during compression.
  • Compare wear across all four pads. Strongly uneven wear can indicate sticking or corroded caliper pistons.

Step 7: Retract the Four Caliper Pistons

  • Place the old pads back against the pistons as protective plates.
  • Use the four-piston brake caliper spreader to press both pads apart slowly and evenly. A caliper spreader is a screw-operated tool that pushes the pistons safely back into their bores.
  • Alternate pressure as necessary so one piston does not push another piston outward.
  • Check the brake-fluid reservoir frequently. Use the plastic brake-fluid syringe to remove excess fluid if it approaches the top.
  • Stop if a piston binds, leaks, or will not retract with moderate pressure.

Step 8: Prepare the New Pads and Hardware

  • Use brake cleaner and disposable shop towels to clean reusable retaining pins and the anti-rattle spring, or install the new hardware kit.
  • Install the anti-squeal shims onto the new pads in the same arrangement as the original pads.
  • Use a gloved fingertip to apply a very thin layer of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant to the pad ears, shim contact points, and retaining-pin contact areas.
  • Do not place lubricant on the rotor or friction surfaces.
  • Match the wear-indicator locations to the original pad arrangement.

Step 9: Install the New Pads

  • Slide the new inboard and outboard pads fully into the caliper by hand, keeping their friction surfaces facing the rotor.
  • Position the anti-rattle spring exactly as it was originally installed.
  • Insert the cleaned or new retaining pins through the caliper, pads, and spring.
  • Use the 4mm pin punch and 16-ounce ball-peen hammer to seat the pins gently.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to install the retaining clips securely in the pin holes.
  • Verify that both pins are captured and the spring is centered. These pins are retained by clips and do not have a torque specification.

Step 10: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 9 on the other front brake assembly using the same listed tools.
  • Confirm that the retaining pins, clips, shims, and anti-rattle spring match the completed side.

Step 11: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise your 4Runner slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it fully.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern: Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Restore Brake Pedal Pressure

  • Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
  • Do not move your 4Runner until the pedal feels firm and consistent.
  • Inspect the brake-fluid reservoir and add fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below the proper range.
  • Use disposable shop towels to clean the reservoir area and install the cap securely by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for approximately 30 seconds. The pedal should not continue sinking.
  • Check both front calipers and the brake-fluid reservoir for leakage.
  • Test the brakes at walking speed in a clear, safe area before driving normally.
  • Follow the pad manufacturer's bedding procedure. If none is supplied, make 6-8 moderate stops from about 50 km/h to 15 km/h, allowing time between stops and avoiding full stops with the pedal held firmly.
  • Drive for several minutes afterward to let the brakes cool. Avoid hard braking for the first 300-500 km unless needed for safety.
  • Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km: Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
