📋 Before You Begin
- Park your RAV4 on level ground.
- Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and locate the 12V battery. On your RAV4 Hybrid, the 12V battery is in the rear cargo area under the floor trim.
- Use a 10mm wrench if available to disconnect the negative 12V battery cable before pushing the caliper pistons back. If your tool kit does not include one, add a 10mm wrench.
- Do not open the brake fluid reservoir unless fluid level is near the top. If needed, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool to prevent overflow.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
- Do this while the tires are still on the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Loosen only. Do not remove yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack at the front center jacking point to lift the front of your RAV4.
- Place jack stands under the front side support points.
- Slowly lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Gently shake the vehicle by hand to make sure it is stable before removing the wheels.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Put on safety glasses, nitrile gloves, and a dust mask.
- Look at how the brake pads, clips, and caliper are positioned before removing anything.
- Take a phone photo for reference.
- A caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.
Step 5: Remove the Caliper Slide Pin Bolts
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
- If the slide pin spins, hold the pin with needle-nose pliers while loosening the bolt.
- Carefully lift the caliper off the rotor.
- Hang the caliper from the strut using a bungee cord.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Use needle-nose pliers or your fingers to remove the old metal pad clips.
- The pad clips are thin stainless hardware pieces that help the pads move smoothly.
- Compare the old pads to the new pads before throwing anything away.
Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 17mm socket, ratchet 1/2-inch drive, and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the caliper bracket and set it on a clean surface.
- These bolts are tight from the factory, so use slow, steady force.
Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor
- Slide the old rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
- If the rotor is stuck, tap around the rotor hat with a soft-faced hammer if available, or carefully wiggle it by hand.
- Do not strike the wheel studs.
- Use brake cleaner spray and a shop towel to clean rust dust from the hub area.
Step 9: Clean the Hub and Install the New Rotor
- Use the wire brush to clean the flat wheel hub surface where the rotor sits.
- Spray the area with brake cleaner spray and wipe it dry with shop towels.
- Install the new rotor onto the hub.
- Hold it in place with one lug nut threaded on by hand.
- A clean hub prevents brake vibration.
Step 10: Service the Caliper Bracket
- Use the wire brush to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
- Install the new brake hardware clips by hand.
- Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the clips.
- Do not get lubricant on the rotor or pad friction material.
- The friction material is the rough surface of the brake pad that contacts the rotor.
Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
- Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
- Torque to 107 Nm (79 ft-lbs)
Step 12: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place the small catch pan under the brake area in case fluid overflows from the reservoir.
- Use the disc brake piston compressor tool to slowly push the caliper piston fully back into the caliper.
- Go slowly. Fast pressure can push fluid back too quickly.
- The piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.
Step 13: Install the New Brake Pads
- Install the new inner and outer brake pads into the bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pads slide smoothly in the new clips.
- Apply a thin coat of brake lubricant only to the pad ears where they touch the clips.
- Do not lubricate the pad face or rotor.
Step 14: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the bungee cord and lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Start both slide pin bolts by hand.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the caliper slide pin bolts.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)
Step 15: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 14 on the other front brake assembly.
- Always replace front pads and rotors in pairs so braking stays balanced.
Step 16: Reinstall the Wheels
- Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
- Install each wheel by hand.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 17: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the vehicle until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs)
Step 18: Reconnect the 12V Battery
- Reconnect the negative 12V battery cable using a 10mm wrench.
- Make sure the terminal is snug and does not twist by hand.
- If the hybrid system shows warning lights briefly after reconnecting, cycle the vehicle off and back on once.
✅ After Repair
- Before driving, press the brake pedal slowly 5-10 times until it feels firm. This seats the caliper pistons against the new pads.
- Check the brake fluid level and make sure it is between the MIN and MAX marks.
- Start your RAV4 and confirm there are no brake warning lights.
- Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area before normal driving.
- Bed in the new pads with several gentle stops from 30-40 mph. Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
- Recheck lug nut torque after your first short drive.
