📋 Before You Begin
- Park your 1500 on level ground and shift the transmission to Park.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. It is the small plastic tank mounted near the brake master cylinder.
- Check the brake fluid level before compressing the caliper pistons. If it is near the MAX line, remove a little fluid with a clean suction tool to prevent overflow.
- A caliper piston compressor is a tool that slowly pushes the brake piston back into the caliper so the thicker new pads will fit.
- Anti-seize is a thin paste that helps prevent the rotor from rusting to the hub. Use only a very light film on the hub face, never on braking surfaces.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about one turn.
- Do this while the tires are still touching the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Tip: Loosen, do not remove yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your 1500 at the front crossmember or approved frame lift point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame rails.
- Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands and gently shake the truck to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum lightly touching the lift point as a backup.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the frame area as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean loose dust from the caliper, pads, and rotor area.
- Look at how the old pads, clips, and caliper are installed before removing them.
- Tip: Take a photo before disassembly.
Step 5: Remove the Caliper Slide Pin Bolts
- Use a 13mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts from the back side of the front caliper.
- A slide pin lets the caliper move side-to-side so both pads press evenly against the rotor.
- If the caliper is snug, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry it away from the rotor.
Step 6: Remove and Support the Caliper
- Lift the caliper off the rotor by hand.
- Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- If they are stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver or small pry bar to gently work them free.
- Note which pad was on the inside and outside.
Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two front caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the caliper bracket from the steering knuckle.
- The steering knuckle is the heavy metal part that holds the wheel hub and turns with the steering.
Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
- If the rotor is stuck from rust, tap the rotor hat area with a dead blow hammer.
- Do not strike the wheel studs directly.
- If needed, apply brake cleaner spray around the hub center and let it soak briefly.
Step 10: Clean the Hub Face
- Use a wire brush to clean rust and scale from the wheel hub face.
- The hub face must be clean so the new rotor sits flat and does not cause brake pulsation.
- Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to wipe the surface clean.
- Use an anti-seize brush to apply a very thin film of anti-seize to the hub face only.
- Do not get anti-seize on the wheel studs or rotor braking surface.
Step 11: Install the New Rotor
- Clean both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and wipe dry with shop towels.
- Slide the new rotor onto the wheel hub by hand.
- Thread one lug nut on by hand backward to hold the rotor flat while you work.
Step 12: Service the Caliper Bracket
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old pad hardware clips from the caliper bracket.
- Use a wire brush to clean the areas under the clips until the new clips sit flat.
- Install the new hardware clips by hand.
- Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the clips.
- Do not put brake lubricant on pad friction material or rotor surfaces.
Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Place the caliper bracket over the rotor and align it with the steering knuckle.
- Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench 20-200 ft-lbs to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
- Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper pistons.
- Use the brake caliper piston compressor to slowly push the pistons fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing. Stop if the fluid gets close to overflowing.
- Tip: Go slow to protect seals.
Step 15: Install the New Brake Pads
- Apply a thin coat of brake lubricant to the pad ears only. The pad ears are the small metal tabs that slide in the hardware clips.
- Install the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- The pads should slide smoothly in the hardware clips without forcing them.
Step 16: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the bungee cord and carefully lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Start both slide pin bolts by hand.
- Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench 20-200 ft-lbs to tighten the caliper slide pin bolts.
- Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 16 on the other front wheel using the same tools.
- Always replace front brake pads and rotors in pairs.
Step 18: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
- Install each front wheel by hand.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 19: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the truck until the tires touch the ground enough to prevent spinning.
- Use the 22mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 20-200 ft-lbs to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).
- Fully lower the truck and remove the floor jack.
Step 20: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
- Do not drive until the brake pedal feels firm.

- ✅ Check the brake fluid reservoir and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.
- ✅ Start your 1500 and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm and not sink to the floor.
- ✅ Test the brakes at very low speed before entering traffic.
