- Park your 1500 on level ground and shift to Park.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir. If it is full, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing caliper pistons.
- Do one side at a time so the other side can be used as a visual reference.
- A caliper is the clamp-shaped brake part that squeezes the pads against the rotor.
- A torque wrench tightens bolts to a precise tightness so they are not too loose or too tight.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about half a turn while the tires are still on the ground.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loose first, lift second.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use a floor jack under the approved front frame lifting area to raise the front of your 1500.
- Place jack stands under the frame rails.
- Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands and gently shake the truck to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching the lift point as a backup.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 22mm socket and ratchet wrench to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat under the truck frame as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Remove the Brake Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room on the side you are working on.
- Use a 13mm socket and ratchet wrench to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
- Slide the caliper off the rotor.
- Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 5: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Use your hands or a flat blade screwdriver to pull the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Note the position of any wear indicator tabs before removing the pads.
- The wear indicator is the small metal tab that squeals when pads are worn low.
Step 6: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the two caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the caliper bracket bolts fully using the 21mm socket and ratchet wrench.
- Remove the caliper bracket and set it on a clean surface.
Step 7: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
- If the rotor is stuck from rust, strike the rotor hat area with a dead blow hammer.
- Do not hit the wheel studs directly.
- The wheel hub is the center metal surface the rotor sits on.
Step 8: Clean the Hub Surface
- Use a wire brush to clean rust and scale from the wheel hub face.
- Spray the area with brake cleaner spray and wipe it dry with shop towels.
- This helps the new rotor sit flat and prevents brake pedal pulsation.
- Clean hub equals smooth braking.
Step 9: Install the New Rotor
- Spray both faces of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray.
- Wipe both faces dry with shop towels to remove protective oil.
- Slide the new rotor onto the hub.
- Thread one lug nut on by hand using the 22mm socket to hold the rotor flat while you work.
Step 10: Service the Caliper Bracket
- Use a flat blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless pad clips from the caliper bracket.
- Use a wire brush to clean the clip contact areas on the bracket.
- Install the new clips from the front brake hardware kit by hand.
- Apply a thin layer of high-temperature brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the clips.
- Do not get lubricant on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.
Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Place the caliper bracket over the rotor.
- Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 21mm socket and ratchet wrench to snug the bolts.
- Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 21mm socket to tighten the caliper bracket bolts to Torque to 275 Nm (203 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper pistons.
- Use a brake caliper piston compressor to slowly push the pistons fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood while compressing the pistons.
- If fluid rises near the top, stop and remove a small amount before continuing.
- Compress slowly to protect the brake hydraulic system.
Step 13: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- Apply a thin film of high-temperature brake lubricant only to the pad ears where they contact the clips.
- Do not lubricate the front or back friction face of the pads.
Step 14: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the bungee cord and carefully lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Start both caliper slide pin bolts by hand.
- Use a 13mm socket and ratchet wrench to snug the bolts.
- Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 13mm socket to tighten the caliper slide pin bolts to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 15: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 14 on the opposite front brake.
- Use the same tools and torque values.
- Always replace front brake pads and rotors in pairs.
Step 16: Reinstall the Wheels
- Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor using the 22mm socket.
- Install each wheel onto the hub.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 22mm socket and ratchet wrench to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 17: Lower and Torque the Wheels
- Use the floor jack to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the truck until the tires touch the ground enough to stop spinning.
- Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 22mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).
- Fully lower the truck and remove the floor jack.
Step 18: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before moving the truck, press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- This seats the caliper pistons against the new pads.
- The pedal may go low on the first push. That is normal after pad replacement.

- ✅ Check the brake fluid level and adjust it to the proper level on the reservoir.
- ✅ Start the engine and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm.
- ✅ Check around both front calipers for brake fluid leaks.

- ✅ Bed in the new pads if the pad manufacturer requires it. A common method is 8-10 moderate stops from about 35 mph down to 5 mph, with cooling time between stops.
