🔧 Ranger - Front Brake Pad & Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces the front brake pads and front brake rotors on your Ranger. The pads create the stopping friction, and the rotors are the metal discs the pads clamp onto.

  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves. Brake dust and rust flakes can irritate your eyes and skin.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while the caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Support the brake caliper with a hanger or bungee cord. Do not let it hang by the rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Front brakes do not require electronic parking brake service mode on your Ranger.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Ranger on level ground and shift the transmission into Park.
  • Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
  • Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir. If it is completely full, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool so it does not overflow when the pistons are compressed.
  • A brake caliper piston compressor tool is a simple clamp-style tool that pushes the caliper piston back into the caliper so the new thicker pads fit.
  • A torque wrench tightens bolts to a measured tightness. This prevents loose bolts and also prevents over-tightening.
  • Do one side at a time. This lets you use the other side as a visual reference.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about 1/2 turn while the tires are still on the ground.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Tip: Loosen before lifting.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Ranger at the approved front jacking point.
  • Place jack stands under the front frame support points.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Lightly shake the truck by hand to confirm it is stable before working underneath or near the wheels.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the side of the truck as an added safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Look at the brake caliper, pads, rotor, and brake hose before taking anything apart.
  • The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the pads against the rotor.
  • Use your phone to take a photo of the pad clips and caliper position before removal.
  • Tip: Photos save guesswork later.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Guide Pin Bolts

  • Use the 13mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the two caliper guide pin bolts from the back of the caliper.
  • If the guide pin spins, hold the guide pin flat with an appropriate wrench while removing the bolt with the 13mm socket.
  • Set the bolts aside in a clean place.

Step 6: Remove and Support the Brake Caliper

  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver gently between the old brake pad and rotor to create a small amount of clearance.
  • Slide the caliper off the rotor by hand.
  • Use the bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
  • Do not stretch, twist, or kink the brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware

  • Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the small pick tool or flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old metal pad clips from the bracket.
  • These clips are called abutment clips. They let the pads slide smoothly in the bracket.

Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the two caliper bracket bolts at the back of the steering knuckle.
  • Remove the bolts with the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet.
  • Lift the caliper bracket away from the rotor.
  • Keep track of the bracket bolts because they are reused if they are clean and undamaged.

Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
  • If the rotor is stuck from rust, strike the rotor hat area with the rubber mallet.
  • The rotor hat is the raised center section of the rotor around the wheel studs.
  • Do not hit the wheel studs.

Step 10: Clean the Hub Face

  • Use the wire brush to clean rust from the wheel hub face.
  • Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to wipe the hub clean.
  • The rotor must sit flat on the hub. Rust trapped here can cause brake vibration.
  • Tip: Clean hub equals smooth braking.

Step 11: Install the New Rotor

  • Clean both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and wipe dry with shop towels.
  • Slide the new rotor onto the wheel studs by hand.
  • Thread one lug nut on backward by hand to hold the rotor flat against the hub while you work.

Step 12: Service the Caliper Bracket

  • Use the wire brush to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
  • Use the small pick tool to remove stubborn dirt from the clip grooves.
  • Install the new brake hardware clips from the front brake hardware kit by hand.
  • Apply a very thin layer of brake caliper slide pin grease only where the pad ears contact the clips.
  • Do not get grease on the rotor or pad friction material.

Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the caliper bracket over the rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts.
  • Use the torque wrench and 18mm socket to tighten the caliper bracket bolts to Torque to 177 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Slide the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
  • The pads should move smoothly in the clips without being loose.

Step 15: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use the brake caliper piston compressor tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Go slowly and check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood so it does not overflow.
  • If fluid rises too high, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool.

Step 16: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the bungee cord and slide the caliper over the new pads and rotor by hand.
  • Start both caliper guide pin bolts by hand.
  • Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts.
  • Use the torque wrench and 13mm socket to tighten the caliper guide pin bolts to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).

Step 17: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 16 on the opposite front brake.
  • Use the same tools and keep the parts separated by side.
  • Always replace front pads and rotors in pairs.

Step 18: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Remove the temporary backward lug nut from each rotor by hand.
  • Install each wheel onto the hub.
  • Start all lug nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 19: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower the truck until the tires just touch the ground.
  • Use the torque wrench and 21mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
  • Fully lower the truck and remove the floor jack.

Step 20: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Before starting or driving, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
  • If you skip this step, the brake pedal may go low the first time you try to stop.

✅ After Repair

  • Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed with the correct brake fluid listed on the reservoir cap.
  • Start your Ranger and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm and steady.
  • Look behind both front wheels for leaks or anything rubbing.
  • Perform a slow test stop in the driveway or parking area before going onto the road.
  • Bed in the new brakes: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 35 mph down to 5 mph, allowing short cooling time between stops.
  • Avoid hard panic stops for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using the torque wrench and 21mm lug nut socket.
