🔧 Insight - Front Brake Pads and Rotor Replacement

This is a solid intermediate DIY job. You’ll replace both front rotors and the complete front pad set, clean and lubricate the caliper hardware, then torque everything correctly. The front brake parts aisle is now open beside this guide.

📋 Before You Begin

• 📍 Park on solid, level pavement. Shift into Park and apply the parking brake.
• 🧱 Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
• 🔑 Turn the vehicle OFF and move the key away from the car.
• 🛞 Use the 19mm socket and breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
• 💧 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it’s at MAX, use the suction syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the pistons.
• 📱 No infotainment or electronic parking-brake service mode is required for the front brakes.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and support the front

• Use the 2-ton floor jack at the approved front-center lifting point.
• Place the 2-ton jack stands under the reinforced front pinch-weld points.
• Lower the car gently onto the stands, then give it a careful stability check.
• Use the 19mm socket and ratchet to remove both front wheels.

Step 2: Remove the caliper

• Turn the steering wheel so the caliper on your working side faces outward.
• Use the 12mm socket and ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
• Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use the brake caliper hanger to support it from the suspension.
• Check that the rubber brake hose isn’t twisted, stretched, or supporting any weight.
• A hanging caliper can ruin an otherwise easy afternoon.

Step 3: Remove the old pads and clips

• Pull the inner and outer pads from the bracket by hand.
• Use the flat-blade screwdriver carefully if a pad is stuck.
• Remove the upper and lower stainless-steel pad clips.
• Note their positions because the upper and lower clips may differ.

Step 4: Remove the caliper bracket

• Use the 17mm socket and breaker bar to remove the two bracket-to-knuckle bolts.
• Hold the bracket while removing the final bolt so it doesn’t fall.
• Keep the bolts clean and inspect their threads for damage.

Step 5: Remove the old rotor

• If retaining screws are fitted, use the #3 Phillips impact screwdriver to loosen them.
• Don’t use a normal Phillips screwdriver if the screws are tight. It can strip their shallow heads.
• Pull the rotor straight from the hub.
• If it’s stuck, thread the two 8 x 1.25mm rotor removal bolts evenly into the rotor’s extraction holes.
• Alternate between the bolts until the rotor releases. Don’t drive one bolt fully inward before the other.
• If needed, use the rubber mallet to tap the rotor hat between the wheel studs.

Step 6: Clean the hub and bracket

• Use brake cleaner, shop towels, and the wire brush to clean the hub face.
• Remove flaky rust around the wheel studs and hub center without damaging the hub.
• Use the wire brush and brake cleaner to clean the bracket’s pad-contact surfaces.
• Make sure the new rotor sits completely flat against the hub. Rust trapped behind it can cause pedal pulsation.

Step 7: Install the new rotor

• Use brake cleaner and clean shop towels on both friction surfaces of the new rotor.
• Install the rotor over the wheel studs and hold it flat against the hub.
• If retaining screws were removed, install them with the #3 Phillips impact screwdriver.
• They only retain the rotor during assembly. Tighten them gently rather than hammering them down.
• Install one wheel nut backward by hand to hold the rotor firmly while assembling the brake.

Step 8: Service the slide pins

• Pull each slide pin from the caliper bracket by hand.
• Use shop towels to remove the old grease without contaminating the rubber boots.
• Inspect the boots for holes, swelling, or tears.
• Apply a thin coating of silicone brake caliper grease to each pin.
• Push the pins back through the boots and confirm they slide smoothly.
• Don’t use petroleum grease. It can damage the rubber components.

Step 9: Reinstall the bracket

• Position the bracket over the new rotor and start both bolts by hand.
• Use the 17mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
• Use the torque wrench and 17mm socket to tighten both bolts to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs). howtoo.com

Step 10: Install the new hardware and pads

• Press the new upper and lower pad clips into the bracket by hand.
• Use the flat-blade screwdriver only if a clip needs gentle seating.
• Apply a very thin film of silicone brake grease where the pad ears slide against the clips.
• Keep grease completely off the rotor and pad friction material.
• Install the inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
• Confirm both pads move freely without excessive looseness.

Step 11: Compress the caliper piston

• Place an old brake pad against the piston face.
• Use the 6-inch C-clamp or front disc brake piston compressor to push the piston straight inward.
• Compress it slowly while watching the brake-fluid reservoir.
• Stop and remove excess fluid with the suction syringe if the reservoir approaches the top.
• Don’t force a piston that binds or enters crooked. That can indicate a damaged caliper.

Step 12: Reinstall the caliper

• Place the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
• Align the caliper with both slide pins and start the bolts by hand.
• Use the 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the slide-pin bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs). howtoo.com)
• Remove the temporary backward wheel nut from the rotor.
• Repeat Steps 2 through 12 on the opposite front side.

Step 13: Reinstall the wheels

• Install each front wheel and thread all wheel nuts by hand.
• Use the 19mm socket and ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
• Use the floor jack to raise the car slightly and remove both jack stands.
• Lower the vehicle completely.
• Use the torque wrench and 19mm socket to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs). howtoo.com

✅ After Repair

• 🦶 With the Insight still OFF, press the brake pedal repeatedly until it becomes firm.
• 💧 Check the reservoir and correct the level with fresh DOT 3 fluid. Don’t overfill it.
• 🔍 Inspect both front calipers for fluid leaks and verify every bolt has been torqued.
• 🚗 Start the vehicle and confirm the brake warning, ABS, and stability-control lights go out normally.
• 🛑 Test the brakes at walking speed before entering traffic.
• 🌡️ Follow the pad manufacturer’s bedding procedure. If none is provided, make 6-10 moderate stops from approximately 35 to 10 mph with cooling time between stops.
• 🚦 Avoid holding the hot brakes firmly at a complete stop immediately after bedding.
• 📏 Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 50 miles.
