🔧 Silverado 1500 - Front Brake Pad & Rotor Replacement

Replace the front pads and both front rotors together to maintain even braking. Your Silverado uses conventional hydraulic front calipers, so no scan tool or electronic service mode is needed.

Assumption: Factory front brake system remains installed.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work on firm, level ground and chock both rear wheels.
  • Support your Silverado with jack stands. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
  • Never allow a caliper to hang from its flexible brake hose.
  • Wear safety glasses and avoid breathing brake dust. Do not use compressed air.
  • Brake fluid damages paint. Remove any spilled fluid immediately and rinse the area with water.
  • Open the brake-fluid reservoir before compressing the pistons, and remove excess fluid if it approaches the rim.
  • Battery disconnection is not required.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level pavement, place the transmission in Park, apply the parking brake, and chock both rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and clean around the brake-fluid reservoir cap before loosening it.
  • Use a brake-fluid syringe to remove a small amount only if the reservoir is near the maximum mark.
  • Keep brake fluid sealed unless it is needed. Use only fresh DOT 3 fluid.
  • No infotainment setting, scan-tool command, or electronic parking-brake service mode is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheel nuts

  • Use a 21mm impact socket and breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts while the tires are supporting the truck.

Step 2: Lift and support the front

  • Use the 3-ton floor jack beneath the front frame crossmember to raise your Silverado.
  • Position the 3-ton jack stands beneath the frame rails behind the front wheels.
  • Lower the frame onto the stands, leave the floor jack lightly touching the crossmember, and gently shake the truck to verify stability.

Step 3: Remove the wheels

  • Use the 21mm impact socket and ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and slide them beneath the frame as an additional precaution.

Step 4: Compress the caliper pistons slightly

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver through the caliper opening to apply gentle pressure between the old inner pad and rotor.
  • Move the pad inward only enough to create clearance for caliper removal.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir and use the brake-fluid syringe if fluid approaches the rim.

Step 5: Remove and support the caliper

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch-drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper from its bracket without twisting the rubber hose.
  • Support the caliper from the suspension with a mechanic’s caliper hanger.
  • Never suspend it by the brake hose.

Step 6: Remove the old pads

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to slide the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Note the orientation of the wear indicator and pad hardware before disposal.
  • Remove the old stainless-steel abutment clips with the flat-blade screwdriver. Abutment clips are the small guides on which the pads slide.

Step 7: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts from the steering knuckle.
  • Remove the caliper bracket and set it on a clean work surface.
  • Discard the old bracket bolts when replacement bolts are supplied or specified as single-use.

Step 8: Remove the rotor

  • If fitted, use a Torx T30 socket and ratchet to remove the rotor retaining screw.
  • Pull the rotor straight from the hub.
  • If rust holds it in place, strike only the old rotor’s hat between the wheel studs with a dead-blow mallet.
  • Do not hit the wheel studs or the thin braking surfaces.

Step 9: Clean the hub

  • Use the hub-cleaning wire brush to remove rust from the hub face and around its center pilot.
  • Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and shop towels to remove debris.
  • The new rotor must sit completely flat against the hub.
  • A clean hub helps prevent pedal pulsation.

Step 10: Install the new rotor

  • Use brake cleaner and shop towels to clean both friction surfaces of the new rotor.
  • Install the rotor over the wheel studs.
  • If equipped, install the retaining screw using the Torx T30 socket and torque wrench: Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
  • Do not coat the hub face or rotor with brake lubricant.

Step 11: Prepare the caliper bracket

  • Use the hub-cleaning wire brush to clean rust beneath the old abutment clips.
  • Install the new abutment clips by hand and ensure each one lies flat.
  • Use nitrile gloves to apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad ears contact the clips.
  • Keep lubricant away from the pad material and rotor surfaces.

Step 12: Install the caliper bracket

  • Position the bracket over the new rotor and start both replacement bracket bolts by hand.
  • Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten both bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 230 Nm (170 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Fully retract the caliper pistons

  • Place an old brake pad across both pistons.
  • Use the dual-piston brake caliper compression tool to push both pistons inward slowly and evenly.
  • A dual-piston tool presses both pistons at the same time so neither piston is forced outward.
  • Monitor the reservoir and use the brake-fluid syringe if necessary.
  • Stop and inspect the caliper if either piston binds or leaks.

Step 14: Install the new pads

  • Use nitrile gloves to place the new inner and outer pads into the bracket in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Confirm both pad ears are fully seated in the new abutment clips.
  • Do not touch the rotor or pad friction surfaces with greasy gloves.

Step 15: Reinstall the caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the pads without twisting the brake hose.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand.
  • Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the guide-pin bolts.
  • Torque to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Repeat on the opposite side

  • Use the same tools and procedure to replace the pads and rotor on the other front corner.
  • Use brake cleaner and shop towels to remove fingerprints or lubricant from both rotors.
  • Front brakes must be replaced in pairs.

Step 17: Reinstall the wheels

  • Install each wheel and start every lug nut by hand.
  • Use the 21mm impact socket and ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack to raise your Silverado, remove the jack stands, and lower the tires to the ground.
  • Use the 21mm impact socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern: Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 18: Restore brake-pedal pressure

  • With the engine off, slowly press and release the brake pedal several times until it becomes firm.
  • Do not move your Silverado until the pedal is firm.
  • Inspect both calipers and hoses for leakage.

✅ After Repair

  • Check the reservoir and adjust the fluid to the proper mark using fresh DOT 3 brake fluid. Do not overfill it.
  • Start the engine and hold steady pedal pressure. The pedal should remain firm and should not continue sinking.
  • Test the brakes at walking speed in a clear area before entering traffic.
  • Follow the brake-pad manufacturer’s bedding procedure. If none is supplied, make 8-10 moderate stops from about 50 km/h to 15 km/h without stopping completely, then drive for 10 minutes to cool the brakes.
  • Avoid hard emergency-style stops during the first 300 km unless safety requires one.
  • Recheck wheel-lug torque after approximately 80-160 km.
  • If the pedal remains soft, the truck pulls, or fluid leaks, stop driving and have the brake system inspected.
