📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Accord on a flat, solid surface.
- Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir. If it is completely full, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the calipers.
- A caliper is the clamp that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.
- A rotor is the round metal disc behind the wheel.
- A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct measured tightness.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
- Do this while the tires are still on the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Do not remove them yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the floor jack at the front center jacking point to raise your Accord.
- Place jack stands under the front side support points.
- Lower the car gently onto the jack stands.
- Give the vehicle a light push to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the car as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Remove the Caliper Slide Pin Bolts
- Turn the steering wheel to make the caliper easier to reach.
- Use the 12mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the upper and lower caliper slide pin bolts.
- Slide pin bolts are the small bolts that let the caliper move in and out smoothly.
- Carefully lift the caliper off the bracket.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension using the bungee cord.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
Step 5: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Use the flathead screwdriver to gently pry the old pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Notice the position of any wear indicator tab before removal.
- Remove the old metal pad clips from the bracket by hand or with the flathead screwdriver.
Step 6: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 17mm socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the bracket and set it aside.
- These bolts are tight from the factory, so keep the socket fully seated.
Step 7: Remove the Rotor Retaining Screws
- Use the impact screwdriver #3 Phillips bit to remove the small Phillips screws holding the rotor to the hub.
- An impact screwdriver is a hand tool you strike with a hammer to loosen tight screws without stripping them.
- If the screws are not stuck, the Phillips #3 screwdriver may work.
- Push hard while turning.
Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub by hand.
- If it is stuck, tap around the rotor hat using the rubber mallet.
- Do not hit the wheel studs.
Step 9: Clean the Hub Surface
- Use the wire brush to clean rust and dirt from the wheel hub face.
- Spray the area with brake cleaner spray and wipe it with shop towels.
- A clean hub helps the new rotor sit flat and prevents brake vibration.
Step 10: Install the New Rotor
- Clean both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and shop towels.
- Slide the new rotor onto the hub.
- Install the rotor retaining screws with the Phillips #3 screwdriver.
- Tighten the rotor screws snugly by hand. Do not over-tighten them.
Step 11: Service the Caliper Bracket
- Use the wire brush to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
- Install the new brake hardware clips by hand.
- Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant only where the pads slide on the clips.
- Do not get lubricant on the rotor or pad friction surface.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the caliper bracket over the rotor.
- Thread the two bracket bolts by hand first.
- Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the caliper bracket bolts to Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the brake caliper compression tool to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston.
- If fluid rises near the top, stop and remove a small amount safely.
- A piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.
Step 14: Install the New Brake Pads
- Install the new brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pad ears sit correctly in the new hardware clips.
- Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the back of the pads where they contact the caliper.
- Do not put lubricant on the friction material.
Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper
- Lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Thread the upper and lower slide pin bolts by hand first.
- Use the 12mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the caliper slide pin bolts to Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the other front brake assembly.
- Front brake pads and rotors must be replaced in pairs.
Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install the wheels by hand.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 18: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to raise the front slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Accord until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
Step 19: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times.
- The pedal may go low at first, then become firm.
- Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.
