📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Trax on firm, level ground. Shift into Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
- Place rubber wheel chocks firmly behind both rear wheels.
- Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir. Clean around its cap before opening it.
- Brake-fluid level rises when the caliper pistons are compressed. Use the brake-fluid suction syringe if the reservoir is already near maximum.
- No infotainment menu, scan-tool command, battery disconnect, or electronic parking-brake procedure is needed.
- Complete one side at a time so the assembled side remains available as a reference.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 19mm impact socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts while the tires are supporting the vehicle.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Vehicle
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at the approved front lifting point and raise your Trax.
- Position the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands, then push it lightly to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 19mm impact socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Use the safety glasses and inspect the brake hose, caliper, dust boot, and surrounding area for leaks or damage.
- Check that the replacement rotor diameter and pad shape match the removed components before installation.
- Do not continue if the caliper is leaking or its piston dust boot is torn.
Step 5: Remove the Caliper
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver carefully between the old pad and rotor to move the piston inward slightly.
- Use the 10mm hex-bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket and support it with the caliper hanger hook. A caliper hanger is a rigid hook that supports the caliper without stressing its hose.
- Do not disconnect the brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to lift the inner and outer pads from the bracket.
- Remove the pad hardware clips with the flat-blade screwdriver.
- Note the position of the wear sensor and any pad indicators before removing them.
Step 7: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place an old brake pad against the piston, then use the front brake caliper piston compressor to push the piston straight into the caliper.
- Compress it slowly while monitoring the brake-fluid reservoir.
- The front piston presses straight inward; it does not need to be rotated.
- Stop if the piston binds, tilts, or leaks fluid.
Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 18mm 6-point socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
- Support the bracket while removing the final bolt.
Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor
- Use the Torx T30 bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the rotor retaining screw.
- Pull the rotor straight from the hub.
- If rust holds it in place, strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs with the rubber mallet.
- Do not strike the wheel studs or the braking surface of a rotor that will be reused.
Step 10: Clean the Hub and Bracket
- Use the hub-cleaning wire brush to remove rust and scale from the hub face.
- Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and the small nylon detailing brush to clean the caliper bracket.
- Keep lubricant and dirty runoff away from the new rotor and pad friction surfaces.
- A clean hub helps prevent brake vibration.
Step 11: Check the Guide Pins
- Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand and inspect it for rust, scoring, or stiffness.
- Clean the pins with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and the small nylon detailing brush.
- Apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant before reinstalling them.
- Replace damaged boots or seized pins before continuing.
Step 12: Install the New Rotor
- Clean both braking faces of the new rotor with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and the small nylon detailing brush.
- Place the rotor fully against the clean hub.
- Install the retaining screw with the Torx T30 bit socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench. Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Use the brake rotor runout dial indicator with magnetic base if vibration existed before repair. Rotor runout is side-to-side wobble as the rotor turns.
- Measured runout should be minimized by cleaning the hub or repositioning the rotor; excessive runout requires correction before assembly.
Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Clean the bracket-bolt threads with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and the small nylon detailing brush.
- Apply one small drop of medium-strength removable threadlocker to each clean, dry bracket bolt.
- Install the bracket and tighten both bolts with the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench. Torque to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Install the New Hardware and Pads
- Press the new pad hardware clips into the bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the hardware.
- Keep lubricant off the rotor and pad friction material.
- Install the inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
- Install the front brake pad wear sensor in the same routed position as the original, keeping its wire clear of the rotor and wheel.
Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the caliper from the caliper hanger hook and place it over the new pads without twisting the hose.
- Install both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 10mm hex-bit socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench. Torque to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).
- Confirm the guide-pin boots are seated and not twisted.
Step 16: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the other front wheel.
- Both front rotors and all front pads must be replaced together.
Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels
- Place each wheel onto its hub and install the lug nuts by hand.
- Use the 19mm impact socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Do not apply final torque while the vehicle is fully raised.
Step 18: Lower and Torque the Wheels
- Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise your Trax slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower the vehicle until the tires firmly contact the ground.
- Use the 19mm impact socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern. Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).
Step 19: Restore Brake-Pedal Pressure
- With the engine off, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- Check the DOT 4 brake-fluid level and adjust it to the MAX line only if necessary.
- Do not drive if the pedal remains soft or sinks toward the floor.

- ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain steady.
- ✅ Check the calipers and brake hoses for fluid leaks.
- ✅ Confirm the brake warning light switches off normally.
- ✅ Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
- ✅ Bed in the pads with approximately 8 moderate stops from 50 km/h to 15 km/h. Allow about 30 seconds of cooling between stops.
- ✅ Avoid coming to a complete stop with the pedal firmly held during bedding.
- ✅ Drive for 10 minutes without heavy braking to cool the brakes, then park without holding hot brakes applied unnecessarily.
