📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Odyssey on level ground and shift to Park.
- Set the parking brake before lifting the front of the vehicle.
- Place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels. Wheel chocks are wedges that stop the vehicle from rolling.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir near the driver-side rear of the engine bay.
- Use a clean rag around the reservoir cap area. Brake fluid damages paint.
- Remove the reservoir cap only if the fluid level is near MAX; the level may rise when you compress the caliper pistons.
- There is no electronic parking brake service mode needed for the front brakes on your Odyssey.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn.
- Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.
- Do not remove them yet.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Odyssey at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Lightly shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Fluid Level
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Look at the brake fluid reservoir level.
- If it is at or above MAX, use a clean method to remove a small amount into a drain pan.
- This prevents overflow when the caliper piston is pushed back.
Step 5: Remove the Caliper Slide Pin Bolts
- Work on one side at a time so the other side can be used as a reference.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts from the back of the caliper.
- The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the brake pads onto the rotor.
Step 6: Lift Off and Support the Caliper
- Use a flathead screwdriver to gently wiggle the caliper loose if it feels stuck.
- Lift the caliper off the pads and rotor.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension using a bungee cord or mechanics wire.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Pull the old pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- If they are tight, use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry them out.
- Notice the position of any wear indicator clips before removal.
Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
- The caliper bracket is the heavy metal frame that holds the brake pads around the rotor.
- Remove the bracket and set it on a clean surface.
Step 9: Remove the Rotor Retaining Screws
- Use a Phillips #3 screwdriver first to try removing the rotor retaining screws.
- If the screws are stuck, use an impact screwdriver. An impact screwdriver turns when struck and helps loosen stubborn screws without stripping them.
- Remove the screws and discard them if damaged.
- Press firmly to avoid stripping.
Step 10: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub by hand.
- If stuck from rust, lightly tap around the rotor hat with a suitable hand tool while pulling evenly.
- Place the old rotor aside.
Step 11: Clean the Hub Face
- Use a wire brush to clean rust from the wheel hub face.
- The hub face is the flat surface where the rotor sits.
- Use brake cleaner and a brake parts cleaning brush to remove dust and debris.
- Let the area dry fully.
- A clean hub prevents brake vibration.
Step 12: Install the New Rotor
- Clean both sides of the new rotor using brake cleaner to remove shipping oil.
- Slide the new rotor onto the hub.
- Install new rotor retaining screws using a Phillips #3 screwdriver.
- Tighten the rotor retaining screws snugly by hand. Do not overtighten.
Step 13: Clean and Prepare the Caliper Bracket
- Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the old pad hardware clips from the caliper bracket.
- Use a wire brush to clean the bracket where the clips sit.
- Install the new brake hardware clips by hand.
- Apply a thin layer of high-temperature brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the hardware.
- Do not get lubricant on the pad friction surface or rotor.
Step 14: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the caliper bracket over the rotor.
- Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
- Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)
Step 15: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use a C-clamp or disc brake piston compressor to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- The piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.
- Go slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir so it does not overflow.
Step 16: Install the New Brake Pads
- Apply a thin layer of high-temperature brake lubricant to the metal backing ears of the new pads.
- Install the inner and outer pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
- Do not touch the rotor or pad friction surface with greasy hands.
Step 17: Reinstall the Caliper
- Lower the caliper over the new pads.
- If it does not fit, use the C-clamp or disc brake piston compressor to compress the piston a little more.
- Start both caliper slide pin bolts by hand.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug them.
- Use a 14mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the bolts.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)
Step 18: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 17 on the opposite front brake.
- Use the same tools and torque specs.
- Replace front pads and rotors in pairs.
Step 19: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Install the wheels by hand.
- Thread the lug nuts on by hand first.
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 20: Lower and Torque the Wheels
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Odyssey until the tires touch the ground.
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)
Step 21: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before moving the vehicle, press the brake pedal slowly several times.
- The pedal may go low at first, then become firm.
- This seats the caliper pistons against the new pads.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.

- ✅ Start your Odyssey and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm, not spongy.
