📋 Before You Begin

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about half a turn.
- Do this while the tires are still on the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Loosen only, do not remove yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the CR-V
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point to lift the front of your CR-V.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the proper front side support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Use your hands to lightly shake the vehicle. It should feel stable before you continue.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the vehicle edge as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Put on safety glasses, nitrile gloves, and a dust mask.
- Look at the brake hose before removal. Make sure it is not cracked, twisted, or leaking.
- Use brake cleaner to lightly wet dusty areas. Do not blow brake dust with air.
Step 5: Remove the Brake Caliper
- Use the 12mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts from the back of the caliper.
- If a slide pin spins, hold it steady with the 17mm wrench while loosening the bolt with the 12mm socket.
- Lift the caliper off the pads and rotor.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension using the brake caliper hanger hook.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Use your hands or a flat blade screwdriver to slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Use the flat blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless pad clips from the bracket.
- Remember their position so the new clips go in the same way.
Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 21mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the caliper bracket and set it on a clean surface.
- These bolts are tight from the factory, so keep the socket straight to avoid rounding the bolt heads.
Step 8: Remove the Rotor Retaining Screws
- Use the Phillips #3 impact screwdriver to loosen and remove the small rotor retaining screws.
- An impact screwdriver is a hand tool you hit with a hammer so stuck screws turn without stripping.
- Use the dead blow hammer on the impact screwdriver if the screws are stuck.
- Press hard into the screw head.
Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub by hand.
- If it is stuck, tap the rotor hat area with the dead blow hammer until it loosens.
- Do not hit wheel studs directly.
Step 10: Clean the Hub Face
- Use the wire brush to clean rust and debris from the wheel hub face.
- The hub face is the flat mounting surface where the rotor sits.
- Wipe the area with brake cleaner and let it dry.
- A clean hub helps prevent brake vibration.
Step 11: Install the New Rotor
- Spray both faces of the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove protective oil.
- Slide the new rotor onto the hub.
- Install the rotor retaining screws using the Phillips #3 impact screwdriver.
- Tighten the rotor retaining screws snugly by hand. Do not over-tighten them.
Step 12: Clean and Prepare the Caliper Bracket
- Use the brake parts cleaning brush and brake cleaner to clean the caliper bracket.
- Use the wire brush to clean the pad contact areas.
- Install the new brake hardware clips by hand in the same positions as the old clips.
- Apply a thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake grease only where the brake pad ears touch the clips.
- Do not put grease on the rotor or pad friction material.
Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Place the caliper bracket back over the rotor.
- Start both bracket bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 21mm socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs to tighten the caliper bracket bolts to Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the C-clamp or disc brake piston compressor tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing. Fluid level will rise.
- If fluid nears the top, remove a small amount using a clean suction tool and keep dirt out.
- Go slowly to protect the brake system.
Step 15: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
- The pads should move smoothly in the new clips without being forced.
Step 16: Reinstall the Brake Caliper
- Lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Start both caliper slide pin bolts by hand.
- If the slide pin spins, hold it with the 17mm wrench.
- Use the 12mm socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs to tighten the caliper slide pin bolts to Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 16 on the other front brake assembly.
- Always replace front pads and rotors as a left-and-right pair.
Step 18: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Install the wheels by hand and thread the lug nuts on by hand first.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 19: Lower the CR-V and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
Step 20: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
- Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check the brake fluid level and top off with DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.
- ✅ Look behind both front wheels for leaks or anything rubbing.
- ✅ Start your CR-V and press the brake pedal again. It should stay firm.
- ✅ Perform a slow test drive in a safe area before normal driving.
- ✅ Bed in the new pads: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 30-40 mph, allowing a short cool-down between stops.
