🔧 CR-V - Front Brake Pad and Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces the front brake pads and both front rotors on your CR-V. The calipers are removed, their pistons are compressed, and the new pads and rotors are installed as matched axle sets.

Assumption: The original front brake calipers and standard-size wheels are installed.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on firm, level pavement and support your CR-V with jack stands. Never rely on a hydraulic jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Front brake parts may be extremely hot. Let them cool completely before starting.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while either front caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Never allow a caliper to hang from its rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful. Do not use compressed air to clean it.
  • ⚠️ Brake fluid damages paint. Immediately rinse away any spill with plenty of water.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease and brake fluid away from pad friction material and rotor faces.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park your CR-V on firm, level ground. Select Park, apply the parking brake, switch off the engine, and place wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
  • 📍 Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall. Clean around its cap before opening it.
  • 📍 Check the fluid level. If it is at the MAX line, remove a small amount with the brake-fluid syringe so it cannot overflow when the caliper pistons are compressed.
  • 📍 No infotainment menu, electronic parking-brake service mode, scan tool, coding, or battery disconnection is needed for the front brakes.
  • 📍 Take a clear photo of the original pad clips and wear-indicator positions before disassembly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the front wheel nuts

  • Use the 19mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn while the tires remain on the ground.
  • Do not remove the nuts yet.

Step 2: Raise and support the front end

  • Use the 2-ton floor jack at the designated front center lifting point, then place the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced front side pinch-weld support points.
  • Lower your CR-V gently onto the stands and leave the floor jack lightly touching the lifting point as a backup.
  • Push the body gently to verify that it is stable before working underneath or removing the wheels.

Step 3: Remove both front wheels

  • Use the 19mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and slide them under the side rails as an additional precaution.

Step 4: Remove the first brake caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel so the caliper on the side being serviced faces outward.
  • Use the 17mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use the caliper hanger hook to support it from the suspension spring.
  • A slide pin is the smooth pin that lets the caliper move evenly as the brakes apply.
  • Do not twist, stretch, or kink the brake hose.

Step 5: Remove the old pads and compress the piston

  • Remove the inner and outer pads by hand. Use the small flat-blade screwdriver only if they are stuck.
  • Place one old pad against the caliper piston and use the brake caliper piston compressor to push the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the brake-fluid syringe if the level approaches the top.
  • The front piston pushes straight inward; it does not need to be rotated.
  • Compress slowly to avoid overflowing the reservoir.

Step 6: Remove the caliper bracket

  • Use the 17mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
  • Hold the bracket securely because it is heavier than it appears.
  • Set the bolts aside on a clean shop towel.

Step 7: Remove the old rotor

  • If rotor-retaining screws are fitted, use the No. 3 JIS impact screwdriver and 32-ounce dead-blow hammer to loosen them. JIS is a Japanese cross-head driver that fits these screws more securely than a Phillips driver.
  • Pull the rotor straight from the hub.
  • If it is rusted in place, use the 32-ounce dead-blow hammer to strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs while rotating the rotor.
  • Do not strike the wheel studs or the thin braking surface near its outer edge.

Step 8: Clean and inspect the hub

  • Use the small wire brush to remove rust and debris from the flat hub face and the rotor-centering lip.
  • Use aerosol brake cleaner and shop towels to wipe the hub clean.
  • The new rotor must sit completely flat. Rust trapped behind it can cause pedal pulsation.
  • Do not apply grease to the hub face, wheel studs, or wheel nuts.

Step 9: Install the new rotor

  • Use aerosol brake cleaner and shop towels to clean both faces of the new rotor until no protective oil remains.
  • Slide the rotor onto the hub without touching its cleaned friction surfaces with bare hands.
  • If retaining screws were removed, install them with the No. 3 JIS impact screwdriver and tighten evenly to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
  • Install two wheel nuts finger-tight using the 19mm socket to hold the rotor flat during reassembly.

Step 10: Service the caliper bracket and slide pins

  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless pad-support clips from the bracket.
  • Use the soft-bristle nylon brush and aerosol brake cleaner to clean the bracket where the new clips sit.
  • Pull each slide pin out by hand, wipe it with a shop towel, and inspect it for rust, scoring, or bending.
  • Apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake grease to each slide pin by hand, then reinstall it into its original bore.
  • Ensure each rubber boot seats around the pin and bracket. Replace any torn or swollen boot.
  • Install the new pad-support clips by hand. Apply only a very thin film of silicone brake grease where the pad tabs contact the clips.
  • Do not place grease on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.

Step 11: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Position the bracket over the rotor and start both bracket bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 17mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten both bolts to 137 Nm (101 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Install the new brake pads

  • Install the inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand, matching the original orientation shown in your reference photo.
  • Place the pad with the wear indicator in the same position as the original inner pad.
  • Make sure both pad tabs move freely in the new support clips.

Step 13: Reinstall the caliper

  • Remove the caliper from the hanger hook and lower it over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
  • Start both slide-pin bolts by hand.
  • Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the slide-pin bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
  • Remove the temporary wheel nuts with the 19mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet.

Step 14: Repeat on the opposite side

  • Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 4 through 13 on the other front wheel.
  • Replace both front rotors and all front pads during the same repair.

Step 15: Reinstall the wheels

  • Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 19mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise your CR-V slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the tires until they touch the ground.
  • Use the 19mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Restore brake-pedal pressure

  • With the engine off, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
  • Do not move your CR-V until the pedal is firm.
  • Check the reservoir and use DOT 3 brake fluid to bring the level between MIN and MAX if needed.
  • Install the reservoir cap securely by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal. The pedal should remain steady and must not sink toward the floor.
  • ✅ Inspect both calipers and brake hoses for fluid leaks before driving.
  • ✅ Confirm that the brake warning light turns off normally.
  • ✅ Drive slowly in a safe area and verify straight, predictable braking.
  • ✅ Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from about 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Do not come to a complete stop during each cycle if traffic conditions permit.
  • ✅ Drive for several minutes afterward with minimal braking to cool the brakes. Avoid hard stops for the first 300 km unless required for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck the brake-fluid level after the test drive.
  • ✅ Recheck wheel-nut torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs) after approximately 50-100 km.
