🔧 Pilot - Front Brake Pads & Rotors Replacement

This repair replaces the front brake pads and front brake rotors on your Pilot. The pads create stopping friction, and the rotors are the metal discs the pads clamp onto; replacing both together helps prevent vibration, noise, and uneven braking.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Pilot on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. Wheel chocks are blocks that stop the vehicle from rolling.
  • 🅿️ Set the parking brake.
  • 🧤 Put on safety glasses and gloves.
  • 🧪 Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir. If it is completely full, remove a small amount with a clean fluid-safe syringe before compressing the caliper pistons.
  • 📌 Front brakes do not require electronic parking brake service mode on your Pilot.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen nuts while tires touch ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
  • Raise your Pilot high enough for both front wheels to clear the ground.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Gently lower your Pilot onto the jack stands.
  • Give the vehicle a light shake to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat under the vehicle as an added safety backup.

Step 4: Remove the Caliper Slide Pin Bolts

  • Turn the steering wheel to make the caliper easier to reach.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
  • The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Hang it from the suspension using a bungee cord or mechanic’s wire.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.

Step 5: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Pull the old inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use a flat hand motion and avoid prying against the rubber brake hose.
  • Look at the old pads. Uneven wear can mean sticky slide pins or caliper issues.

Step 6: Compress the Caliper Pistons

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper pistons.
  • Use a C-clamp or disc brake spreader tool to slowly push the pistons fully back into the caliper.
  • A piston is the round metal part inside the caliper that pushes the pads.
  • Go slowly and watch the brake fluid level under the hood so it does not overflow.
  • Slow pressure prevents fluid overflow.

Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the caliper bracket from the steering knuckle.
  • The steering knuckle is the heavy metal part behind the rotor that holds the wheel hub and brake parts.

Step 8: Remove the Rotor Retaining Screws

  • Use an impact screwdriver with Phillips #3 bit to loosen the rotor retaining screws.
  • An impact screwdriver is a hand tool you strike with a hammer to loosen tight screws without stripping them.
  • If the screws are not stuck, use a Phillips #3 screwdriver to remove them.
  • Set the screws aside if they are reusable.

Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
  • If it is stuck from rust, tap around the rotor hat using a rubber mallet.
  • Do not hit the wheel studs.
  • Spray the hub area with brake cleaner spray and catch runoff in a catch pan.

Step 10: Clean the Hub Face

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust and debris from the flat wheel hub face.
  • The hub face must be smooth so the new rotor sits flat.
  • Spray the area with brake cleaner spray and let it dry.
  • A clean hub prevents brake vibration.

Step 11: Install the New Rotor

  • Clean both sides of the new rotor using brake cleaner spray.
  • Slide the new rotor onto the hub.
  • Install the rotor retaining screws with a Phillips #3 screwdriver.
  • Tighten the rotor retaining screws snugly; do not over-tighten them.

Step 12: Service the Caliper Bracket

  • Remove the old pad hardware clips from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use a wire brush to clean the bracket where the clips sit.
  • Install the new front brake pad hardware clips by hand.
  • Apply a thin layer of synthetic brake caliper grease where the brake pad ears touch the clips.
  • Do not put grease on the pad friction material or rotor surface.

Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the caliper bracket over the rotor.
  • Start the two bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 17mm socket and torque wrench rated to 200 ft-lbs to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs)

Step 14: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Slide the new inner and outer brake pads into the bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pads move smoothly in the hardware clips.
  • If a pad is tight, remove it and recheck the clip position.
  • Pads should slide, not bind.

Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new brake pads.
  • Start the two slide pin bolts by hand.
  • Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs to tighten the slide pin bolts.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)

Step 16: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the opposite front brake assembly.
  • Use the same tools and torque values.
  • Always replace front brake pads and rotors in pairs.

Step 17: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Install each front wheel onto the hub.
  • Thread the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 18: Lower and Torque the Wheels

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift your Pilot slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)

Step 19: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Before starting or driving, press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back into position against the new pads.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir and make sure the level is between MIN and MAX.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Pilot and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm, not sink to the floor.
  • ✅ Check behind both front wheels for brake fluid leaks.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Bed in the new brakes: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 30-35 mph down to 5 mph, allowing short cooling time between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard emergency-style braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs.
