📋 Before You Begin

- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels to stop the vehicle from rolling.
- 🛑 Do not set the parking brake if you plan to lift the rear later, but for this front-only brake job it is okay to leave it set before lifting.
- 🔍 Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir. If it is very full, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the caliper pistons.
- 📘 A caliper is the clamp that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor to stop the vehicle.
- 📘 A rotor is the round metal disc behind the wheel that the brake pads press against.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about half a turn.
- Do this while the tires are still on the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Loosen only; do not remove yet.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front
- Use the floor jack at the front center jack point or the proper front side pinch weld lift point.
- Place jack stands under the front pinch weld support points.
- Lower your Tucson gently onto the jack stands.
- Push the vehicle lightly by hand to make sure it is stable before removing the wheels.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Remove the Caliper Lower and Upper Slide Bolts
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room on the side you are working on.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the two caliper slide bolts.
- If the slide pin spins, hold it with the 17mm wrench while loosening the bolt with the 14mm socket.
- A slide pin is a smooth pin that lets the caliper move side-to-side as the brakes wear.
Step 5: Lift Off and Support the Caliper
- Use the flat blade screwdriver carefully to wiggle the caliper loose if it feels stuck.
- Lift the caliper off the brake pads and rotor.
- Use the bungee cord to hang the caliper from the strut spring or suspension.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the flat blade screwdriver to carefully pry out the old stainless pad clips.
- The pad clips are thin metal guides that help the pads slide smoothly.
- Use the wire brush to clean the bracket areas where the clips sit.
Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 17mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, or 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
- Hold the bracket with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
- Set the bracket on a clean surface.
Step 8: Remove the Rotor Retaining Screws
- Use the Phillips #3 screwdriver to remove the rotor retaining screws from the rotor face.
- If the screws are stuck, use the impact screwdriver. An impact screwdriver turns when struck and helps remove tight screws without stripping them.
- Press hard to avoid stripping screws.
Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
- If it is stuck from rust, tap the rotor hat area with a suitable hammer if available, avoiding the wheel studs.
- Use the wire brush to clean rust from the hub face.
- Spray the hub face with brake cleaner spray and wipe it with shop towels.
- The hub face must be clean so the new rotor sits flat and does not cause vibration.
Step 10: Install the New Rotor
- Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and wipe it dry with shop towels.
- Slide the new rotor onto the hub.
- Reinstall the rotor retaining screws with the Phillips #3 screwdriver.
- Tighten the rotor screws snugly by hand. Do not over-tighten them.
Step 11: Service the Caliper Bracket and Slide Pins
- Use the wire brush to clean the caliper bracket where the new hardware clips install.
- Install the new brake hardware clips by hand.
- Pull the slide pins out of the bracket by hand and wipe them with shop towels.
- Apply a light coat of disc brake caliper slide pin grease to the slide pins.
- Push the slide pins back into the bracket until they move smoothly.
- Use brake grease only on slide pins.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Place the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
- Start both caliper bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
- Torque to 88-98 Nm (65-72 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new brake pads into the new hardware clips by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- Apply a very thin layer of disc brake caliper slide pin grease only to pad ears where they touch the clips.
- Do not get grease on the rotor or pad friction surface.
Step 14: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the C-clamp brake caliper compression tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Compress slowly and check the brake fluid reservoir so it does not overflow.
- The piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.
Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the bungee cord and place the caliper over the new pads.
- Start both slide bolts by hand.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the slide bolts.
- If the slide pin spins, hold it with the 17mm wrench.
- Use the 14mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the slide bolts.
- Torque to 22-32 Nm (16-24 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Use the same tools and repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the other front brake.
- Always replace front brake pads and rotors in pairs.
Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels
- Place each wheel back onto the hub.
- Start all lug nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 18: Lower and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift your Tucson slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 88-107 Nm (65-79 ft-lbs).
Step 19: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before driving, sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back against the new pads.
- If you skip this step, the brake pedal may go low on the first press.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed with the correct brake fluid listed on the reservoir cap.
- ✅ Start your Tucson and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm and normal.
- ✅ Check behind both front wheels for leaks or loose parts.
- ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe area before normal driving.
- ✅ Bed in the brakes by making several gentle stops from about 30 mph, allowing time between stops for cooling.
- ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
- ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
