🔧 Optima - Front Brake Pad and Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces the front brake pads and both front rotors on your Optima. Worn pads or rotors can cause grinding, vibration, longer stopping distances, or steering-wheel shake while braking.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Replace the pads and rotors on both front wheels. Never repair only one side.
  • ⚠️ Support your Optima with jack stands. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust can be harmful. Do not use compressed air to clean brake components.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Optima on firm, level ground. Shift into Park and apply the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place rubber wheel chocks tightly behind both rear tires.
  • 🌡️ Allow the brakes to cool completely before touching them.
  • 📱 Photograph each brake assembly before disassembly. This provides a useful reference.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall. Clean around its cap before loosening it.
  • 🔩 A caliper bracket is the heavy metal support holding the caliper over the rotor.
  • 🔧 A guide pin is the lubricated sliding pin that lets the caliper move evenly as the brakes apply.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use a 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Do not remove the nuts while the tires are still carrying the vehicle’s weight.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use the 2-ton floor jack at the reinforced front-center lifting point behind the engine splash shield.
  • Place the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced pinch-weld support points behind both front wheels.
  • Lower your Optima gently onto the stands. Lightly shake the body to confirm that it is stable.
  • Keep the floor jack nearby as backup support.

Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both wheels and slide them beneath the side rails as additional protection.

Step 4: Check the Brake-Fluid Level

  • Use a small nylon trim tool to carefully release the brake-fluid reservoir cap if it is difficult to turn.
  • If the fluid is at the MAX line, use the small fluid suction syringe to remove a small amount into the drain pan.
  • Rest the cap loosely over the reservoir to prevent contamination. Do not leave the reservoir open.

Step 5: Remove the First Caliper

  • Work on one side at a time so the assembled opposite side remains available as a reference.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • If a guide pin turns, hold its flat section with the appropriately positioned 17mm socket while loosening the 14mm bolt.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use the mechanic’s wire hanger to suspend it from the strut spring.
  • Do not twist, stretch, or support the caliper by its brake hose.

Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to slide the inner and outer brake pads from the bracket.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless pad-support clips.
  • Note the position of the wear indicator and install the new pads in the matching orientation.

Step 7: Retract the Caliper Piston

  • Place an old brake pad across the piston face.
  • Use the brake caliper piston compressor to press the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
  • Watch the reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the small fluid suction syringe if the fluid approaches the rim.
  • Inspect the rubber piston boot. Stop if it tears, leaks fluid, or folds into the piston bore.
  • Slow compression helps prevent fluid overflow.

Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
  • Support the bracket while removing the final bolt.

Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor

  • If fitted, use the Phillips No. 3 impact screwdriver to remove the rotor retaining screw.
  • Pull the rotor straight from the hub.
  • If rust holds it in place, strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs with the 16-ounce rubber mallet. Do not strike the studs.

Step 10: Clean the Hub and New Rotor

  • Position the drain pan beneath the hub.
  • Use the hand wire brush to remove rust from the hub face and center pilot until the surfaces are flat and clean.
  • Spray both friction faces of the new rotor with non-chlorinated brake cleaner. Wipe away all shipping oil with a clean shop towel.
  • Do not apply lubricant between the rotor and hub.

Step 11: Install the New Rotor

  • Place the clean rotor squarely over the wheel studs.
  • If equipped, install the retaining screw with the Phillips No. 3 impact screwdriver.
  • Torque the rotor retaining screw to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) using the torque wrench rated 10-150 Nm only if it can accurately measure this low. Otherwise, tighten it gently by hand without forcing it.

Step 12: Service the Bracket and Guide Pins

  • Use the hand wire brush to clean rust from the bracket where the stainless hardware clips sit.
  • Install the new clips by hand, using the flat-blade screwdriver only for gentle seating.
  • Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand. Wipe it clean and inspect it for rust, scoring, or binding.
  • Apply a thin coat of silicone-based brake lubricant to each guide pin, then reinstall it with its boot fully seated.
  • Move each pin by hand. It must slide smoothly.
  • Do not use petroleum grease because it can swell the rubber boots.

Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the bracket over the rotor and start both bolts by hand.
  • Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench rated 10-150 Nm to tighten both bolts.
  • Torque the caliper-bracket bolts to 88 Nm (65 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Apply a very thin layer of silicone-based brake lubricant to the pad ears where they touch the stainless clips.
  • Install the inner and outer pads by hand in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Do not place lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor surfaces.
  • Confirm that both pads slide freely in the bracket without excessive looseness.

Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the mechanic’s wire hanger and lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Make sure the brake hose is not twisted.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench rated 10-150 Nm to tighten the bolts.
  • Torque the caliper guide-pin bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 15 on the other front wheel using the same listed tools.
  • Compare the completed assemblies and verify that both brake hoses follow their original paths.

Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Install both wheels and start every wheel nut by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise your Optima slightly, remove the 2-ton jack stands, and lower the tires to the ground.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and torque wrench rated 10-150 Nm to tighten the nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque the wheel nuts to 108-127 Nm (80-94 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • 🦶 Before starting the engine, press and release the brake pedal repeatedly until it becomes firm. This moves the caliper pistons against the new pads.
  • 🧴 Check the reservoir and adjust the fluid to the MAX line only if necessary. Use fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid from a sealed bottle.
  • 🔍 Inspect both calipers and the area beneath your Optima for brake-fluid leaks.
  • 🚫 Do not drive if the pedal remains soft, sinks toward the floor, or a brake warning light stays illuminated.
  • 🚗 Perform the first test at walking speed in a clear, level area. Confirm that your Optima stops straight without grinding or pulling.
  • 🌡️ Follow the brake-pad manufacturer’s bedding procedure. Avoid hard braking unless required for safety during the first 300-500 km.
  • 🔩 Recheck the wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
