🔧 HR-V - Front Brake Pad & Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces the front brake pads and front brake rotors on your HR-V. The pads are the friction material that stops the vehicle, and the rotors are the metal discs the pads clamp onto.

  • ⚠️ Brake fluid can damage paint. Wipe spills immediately with water.
  • ⚠️ After the repair, pump the brake pedal before driving. The pedal will feel low at first.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your HR-V on level ground and place the transmission in Park.
  • Apply the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. This is the small plastic tank near the driver-side rear of the engine bay.
  • Do not disconnect the battery for this front brake repair.
  • Brake caliper means the metal clamp that holds the brake pads and squeezes them against the rotor.
  • Brake rotor means the round metal disc behind the wheel.
  • Caliper bracket means the larger metal support that bolts to the steering knuckle and holds the pads in place.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.
  • Tip: Do not remove them yet.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the HR-V

  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front of your HR-V at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the proper front side support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
  • Give the vehicle a light shake by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Fluid Level

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Look at the brake fluid reservoir under the hood.
  • If the fluid is already at the MAX line, use shop towels around the reservoir in case fluid rises when the pistons are pushed back.
  • Do not leave the reservoir open where dirt can enter.

Step 5: Remove the Front Brake Caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room on the side you are working on.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Use a brake caliper hanger or bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or strut.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware

  • Use your hands or a flathead screwdriver to slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Use the flathead screwdriver to remove the old stainless pad clips from the bracket.
  • Remember how the clips are positioned before removing them.
  • Tip: Take a photo before disassembly.

Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the caliper bracket and set it on a clean surface.
  • These bolts are tight from the factory, so use steady pressure instead of quick jerks.

Step 8: Remove the Front Rotor

  • Use a Phillips #3 screwdriver or impact screwdriver to remove the rotor retaining screws.
  • An impact screwdriver is a hand tool you strike with a hammer so the screw turns without stripping.
  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
  • If the rotor is stuck, tap around the rotor hat area with a suitable hammer while wearing safety glasses.
  • Do not hit the wheel studs.

Step 9: Clean the Hub Surface

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust and debris from the wheel hub face.
  • Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to wipe the hub clean.
  • The new rotor must sit flat against the hub to prevent brake vibration.

Step 10: Install the New Rotor

  • Clean both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and shop towels.
  • Slide the new rotor onto the hub.
  • Install the rotor retaining screws using a Phillips #3 screwdriver.
  • Tighten the screws snug only. Do not overtighten them.

Step 11: Service the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a wire brush to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
  • Install the new brake hardware clips by hand.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant only where the pad ears touch the hardware clips.
  • Do not get lubricant on the rotor or pad friction material.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 17mm socket and torque wrench rated to 120 ft-lbs to tighten the bracket bolts.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use a C-clamp or disc brake piston compressor to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • A piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.
  • Go slowly and check the brake fluid reservoir so it does not overflow.

Step 14: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Slide the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pads move smoothly in the hardware clips.
  • If they bind, remove them and clean the bracket contact points again with the wire brush.

Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new brake pads.
  • Start the caliper slide pin bolts by hand.
  • Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench rated to 120 ft-lbs to tighten the slide pin bolts.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 15 on the opposite front wheel.
  • Always replace front pads and rotors in pairs.

Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Put both front wheels back on the hubs.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 18: Lower the HR-V and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower your HR-V until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench rated to 120 ft-lbs to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 19: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times.
  • The pedal will travel low at first, then become firm.
  • Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.

Step 20: Check Brake Fluid

  • Check the brake fluid reservoir level.
  • If needed, add DOT 3 brake fluid until the level is between MIN and MAX.
  • Use shop towels to clean any spills.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your HR-V and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm.
  • ✅ Check behind both front wheels for brake fluid leaks.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Perform brake bedding: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 35 mph down to 10 mph, allowing cooling time between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless it is an emergency.
  • ✅ Recheck front lug nut torque after the first short drive.
