🔧 Canyon - Front Brake Pad and Rotor Replacement

This is a manageable driveway repair if you work one side at a time and support your Canyon correctly. You’ll remove both front calipers and brackets, replace both 310 mm rotors and the complete front pad set, then bed the new brakes.

Assumption: These instructions cover the stock front brake system. Confirm all fastener torque values against current GMC service information before final tightening.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Support the front end with properly rated jack stands on solid, level ground.
  • ⚠️ Wear a dust mask. Don’t blow brake dust away with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Hang each caliper securely. Never let it dangle from its rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Don’t press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Brake cleaner and brake fluid can damage paint. Clean spills immediately.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease, oil, and dirty hands away from pad friction material and rotor faces.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection isn’t required for this repair.
  • ⚠️ The front brakes don’t require electronic parking brake service mode.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park your Canyon on solid, level pavement with the transmission in Park.
  • 📋 Apply the parking brake and place wheel chocks tightly behind both rear tires.
  • 📋 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. Remove a little fluid with a fluid syringe if it’s near the maximum line.
  • 📋 Leave the reservoir cap resting loosely in place to keep dirt out.
  • 📋 Photograph the installed pads, clips, and wear indicators before disassembly.
  • 📋 Work on one side at a time so the assembled side remains your reference.
  • 📋 No infotainment menu, scan tool, battery registration, or electronic parking brake procedure is needed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use a 22mm deep socket and breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Don’t remove the wheel nuts while the tires are still carrying the truck’s weight.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front End

  • Use the 3-ton floor jack at the approved front lifting point.
  • Position the 3-ton jack stands beneath approved frame support points on both sides.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the stands, then give it a firm stability check.
  • Keep the floor jack touching the lifting point as a backup without carrying vehicle weight.

Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels

  • Use the 22mm deep socket to remove the loosened wheel nuts.
  • Remove both wheels and slide them underneath the frame as an additional precaution.

Step 4: Create Piston Clearance

  • Use a large flat-blade screwdriver through the caliper opening to apply gentle pressure between the old outer pad and rotor.
  • Move the pad only enough to create a small amount of caliper clearance.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while the pistons move inward. Remove excess fluid with the fluid syringe if necessary.
  • Slow pressure protects seals and reduces spills.

Step 5: Remove and Support the Caliper

  • Use the correctly fitting 15mm socket to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • Hold the guide pin with the appropriate wrench if it rotates with the bolt.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket without pulling or twisting the brake hose.
  • Use a caliper hanger hook to suspend the caliper from the suspension.
  • Inspect the hose for cracks, swelling, wetness, or damaged outer covering.

Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the large flat-blade screwdriver carefully if corrosion has trapped the pads.
  • Note the position of every wear indicator before removing the pads.
  • Remove the old stainless abutment clips. Abutment clips are the metal guides the pad ends slide against.

Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use an 18mm socket, short extension, and breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
  • Support the bracket while removing the second bolt.
  • Set the bracket on a clean work surface.

Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Remove any rotor retaining screw or factory retaining washer using the correctly fitting tool. Don’t reuse disposable shipping-style retaining washers.
  • Pull the rotor straight from the hub.
  • If it’s rusted in place, use a dead-blow hammer around the rotor hat between the wheel studs.
  • Don’t strike the wheel studs or the new braking surface.

Step 9: Clean the Hub Face

  • Place the plastic drain pan below the hub.
  • Use the hub cleaning brush to remove rust and debris from the flat hub face.
  • Wipe the hub clean with brake cleaner and a clean shop towel.
  • The new rotor must sit completely flat. A little rust behind it can create brake pulsation later.

Step 10: Prepare and Install the New Rotor

  • Use brake cleaner and clean shop towels on both rotor friction surfaces unless the rotor manufacturer specifically says its coating is installation-ready.
  • Install the new rotor over the wheel studs.
  • Use one wheel nut backward by hand to hold the rotor flat against the hub.
  • If equipped with a reusable rotor screw, install it lightly with the correct hand tool. It only locates the rotor and shouldn’t be overtightened.

Step 11: Service the Caliper Bracket

  • Use the small wire brush to clean rust beneath the old abutment clips.
  • Install the new clips fully into their original positions.
  • Remove one guide pin at a time by hand, wipe it clean, and inspect its rubber boot.
  • Apply a thin layer of silicone brake lubricant to each clean guide pin, then reinstall it.
  • Make sure both guide pins move smoothly and their boots seal correctly.
  • Don’t use petroleum grease on rubber brake components.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the bracket over the new rotor and start both bolts by hand.
  • Use the 18mm socket and torque wrench for final tightening.
  • Torque the caliper-bracket bolts to the current GMC service specification.
  • Don’t estimate this torque. These are critical structural brake fasteners.

Step 13: Fully Compress the Caliper Pistons

  • Place an old pad across both pistons.
  • Use the two-piston caliper compression tool to push both pistons inward evenly. This tool presses both pistons straight back into the caliper together.
  • Compress them slowly while monitoring the reservoir.
  • Stop if either piston binds, tilts, leaks, or requires excessive force.

Step 14: Install the New Pads

  • Apply a very thin film of silicone brake lubricant where the pad ears contact the stainless clips.
  • Install the inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Place the mechanical wear indicator in the same location shown in your reference photo.
  • Keep lubricant completely off the rotor faces and pad friction surfaces.
  • Confirm both pads slide freely in the bracket without excessive looseness.

Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the caliper from its hanger and lower it carefully over the new pads.
  • Don’t force the caliper into place. Recheck piston compression and pad seating if it won’t fit.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 15mm socket and torque wrench for final tightening.
  • Torque the caliper guide-pin bolts to the current GMC service specification.
  • Verify the brake hose isn’t twisted and both guide-pin boots remain seated.

Step 16: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the other front wheel.
  • Replace pads and rotors on both sides during the same repair.
  • Compare the completed sides before installing the wheels.

Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Remove the temporary wheel nut holding each rotor.
  • Install each wheel and start all six wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Raise the truck slightly with the floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower it until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in stages and a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque the wheel nuts to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 18: Restore Brake Pedal Pressure

  • Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
  • Don’t move the truck until the pedal is firm and consistent.
  • Check the reservoir and set the brake-fluid level between MIN and MAX using fresh specified fluid only.
  • Tighten the reservoir cap securely.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. It shouldn’t continue sinking.
  • ✅ Inspect both front calipers and hoses for brake-fluid leaks.
  • ✅ Make a very slow test stop in a safe area before entering normal traffic.
  • ✅ Bed the pads using the pad manufacturer’s instructions. A common routine is several moderate stops with cooling time between them.
  • ✅ Don’t come to a complete stop and hold the hot pads against the rotors during bedding.
  • ✅ Avoid panic stops, towing, and repeated heavy braking for the first 200 miles unless an emergency requires it.
  • ✅ Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 50 miles.
  • ✅ Stop driving immediately if the pedal feels soft, the truck pulls hard, or you hear metal grinding.
