- 🛞 Slightly loosen the front lug nuts before lifting the truck. Do not remove them yet.
- 🧰 Open the brake fluid reservoir cap under the hood. Lay a shop towel around it in case fluid rises while compressing the caliper pistons.

- 📌 A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct tightness so they are not too loose or over-tightened.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about half a turn.
- Do this while the tires are still on the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Do not remove lug nuts yet.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Canyon at a solid front frame or crossmember lifting point.
- Place jack stands under the front frame rails.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Lightly shake the truck by hand to confirm it is stable before working underneath or near the wheels.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 22mm lug nut socket and ratchet handle to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.
- Slide one wheel under the frame as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Use safety glasses and look at the caliper, brake hose, pads, and rotor before taking anything apart.
- Check that the brake hose is not cracked, twisted, or leaking.
- Use a shop towel to wipe dirt from the caliper area if needed.
Step 5: Remove the Caliper Guide Pin Bolts
- Use a 13mm socket and ratchet handle to remove the two caliper guide pin bolts from the back of the caliper.
- If the slide pin spins, hold it steady with an 18mm wrench while turning the bolt with the 13mm socket.
- The guide pins let the caliper slide smoothly as the pads wear.
Step 6: Remove and Support the Caliper
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry the caliper outward just enough to loosen it from the brake pads.
- Lift the caliper off the rotor by hand.
- Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
- Do not let the caliper hang from the rubber brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- If they are stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry them out.

Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket

Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
- If the rotor is stuck from rust, tap around the rotor hat with a rubber mallet.
- The rotor hat is the raised center section of the rotor that sits over the wheel hub.
- Rotate while tapping gently.
Step 10: Clean the Hub Surface
- Use a wire brush to clean rust from the wheel hub face.
- Use brake cleaner spray and a shop towel to wipe the hub clean.
- A clean hub helps the new rotor sit flat and prevents brake pedal vibration.
Step 11: Prepare the New Rotor
- Use brake cleaner spray to clean both sides of the new rotor.
- Wipe the rotor dry with a shop towel.
- New rotors often have protective oil on them, and it must be removed before driving.
Step 12: Install the New Rotor
- Slide the new rotor onto the wheel hub by hand.
- Install one lug nut by hand using the 22mm lug nut socket to hold the rotor flat while you work.
- Do not fully tighten this temporary lug nut.
Step 13: Clean and Prepare the Caliper Bracket
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old brake pad hardware clips from the caliper bracket.
- Use a wire brush and brake parts cleaning brush to clean the bracket where the clips sit.
- Install the new clips from the front brake pad hardware kit by pressing them into place by hand.
- Apply a thin layer of brake caliper slide pin grease only where the pad ears contact the clips.
Step 14: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Place the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
- Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
- Torque to 200 Nm (148 ft-lbs)
Step 15: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
- The friction material is the rough surface that contacts the rotor.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to gently guide the pads into the new clips.
Step 16: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place an old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use a brake caliper piston compressor to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood while compressing the piston.
- If brake fluid gets close to overflowing, use a shop towel to carefully absorb excess fluid from the reservoir area.
- Go slow to protect seals.
Step 17: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the bungee cord and slide the caliper over the new pads and rotor by hand.
- Start both caliper guide pin bolts by hand.
- Use a 13mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the caliper guide pin bolts.
- If the slide pin spins, hold it with an 18mm wrench.
- Torque to 42 Nm (31 ft-lbs)
Step 18: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 17 on the opposite front wheel.
- Use the same tools and install the matching new rotor, pads, and hardware.
- Always replace front brake pads and rotors on both sides together.
Step 19: Reinstall the Wheels
- Remove the temporary lug nut from each rotor using the 22mm lug nut socket.
- Install the wheels by hand.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand first to prevent damaged threads.
- Use the 22mm lug nut socket and ratchet handle to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 20: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the truck to the ground using the floor jack.
- Use the 22mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs)
Step 21: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times.
- The pedal will feel soft at first, then become firm.
- Do not drive until the brake pedal feels firm.
Step 22: Check Brake Fluid Level
- Use safety glasses and check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood.
- Make sure the fluid level is between the MIN and MAX marks.
- Reinstall the reservoir cap by hand.
