📋 Before You Begin
- 📍 Park your Suburban on firm, level pavement. Place the transmission in Park and apply the parking brake.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks tightly behind both rear tires.
- 🛞 Confirm that the replacement rotors and pads match the original front brake package before disassembly.
- 💧 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is at the MAX line, remove a small amount with the plastic fluid syringe so it cannot overflow when the caliper pistons are compressed.
- 📱 No infotainment service mode, scan tool, electronic parking-brake retraction, or battery disconnection is required for the front brakes.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 22mm deep impact socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
- Do not completely remove the wheel nuts while your Suburban is on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front End
- Use the 3-ton floor jack beneath the reinforced front crossmember to raise the front of your Suburban.
- Position the 6-ton jack stands under the left and right frame rails immediately behind the front wheels.
- Lower your Suburban onto the stands. Gently push the body to verify that it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching the crossmember as a secondary precaution.
Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels
- Use the 22mm deep impact socket and 1/2-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and slide them flat beneath the frame as an additional safety measure.
Step 4: Compress the Caliper Pistons Slightly
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver through the caliper opening to gently push the old inboard pad away from the rotor.
- Move it only enough to create clearance for caliper removal. Do not damage the rubber piston boots.
- Check the brake-fluid reservoir for rising fluid. Remove excess fluid with the plastic fluid syringe if necessary.
Step 5: Remove the Front Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel to provide better access to the caliper bolts on the side being serviced.
- Use the 18mm six-point socket and 1/2-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- A guide pin is the smooth sliding pin that lets the floating caliper move evenly as the brakes are applied.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket. Suspend it from the suspension with mechanic’s wire.
- Do not twist, stretch, or pull on the brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
- Use the small hooked pick to remove the old stainless-steel pad hardware from the bracket.
- Note the location of the wear indicator on the original pad so the replacement pad can be installed in the same orientation.
Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 21mm six-point socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
- These bolts are tight. Keep the socket fully seated and pull the breaker bar steadily.
- Remove the caliper bracket and place it on a clean work surface.
Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor
- Use the Torx T30 bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the rotor retaining screw.
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If the rotor is rusted in place, strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs with the 16-ounce rubber mallet. Do not strike the studs.
- Rotate the rotor while tapping around its center.
Step 9: Clean the Hub and New Rotor
- Place the drain pan beneath the hub.
- Use the hand wire brush to remove rust and debris from the flat hub face.
- Wipe the hub with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and disposable shop towels.
- Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and shop towels to clean both friction surfaces of the new rotor. New rotors have a protective coating that must be removed unless the packaging specifically identifies them as coated and ready to install.
- Do not apply grease or anti-seize between the rotor and hub.
Step 10: Install the New Rotor
- Place the new rotor over the wheel studs and seat it fully against the hub.
- Install a new retaining screw with the Torx T30 bit socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench.
- Torque the rotor retaining screw to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
Step 11: Prepare the Caliper Bracket
- Use the hand wire brush to clean the bracket surfaces beneath the stainless-steel pad hardware.
- Install the new pad hardware by hand. Ensure each clip is completely seated.
- Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand and inspect it for corrosion, scoring, or binding.
- Wipe the guide pins clean with disposable shop towels. Apply a thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant and reinstall them.
- Do not use petroleum grease because it can damage the rubber boots.
- Confirm that both guide pins slide smoothly and that their boots are fully seated.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the bracket over the rotor and start both bracket bolts by hand.
- Use the 21mm six-point socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten both bolts.
- Torque the caliper-bracket bolts to 230 Nm (170 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Fully Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Place an old brake pad across both caliper pistons.
- Use the dual-piston brake caliper compression tool to press both pistons slowly and evenly into the caliper.
- A caliper compression tool pushes the pistons straight inward without damaging them.
- Watch the reservoir while compressing the pistons. Use the plastic fluid syringe if the fluid approaches the top.
- Stop if a piston binds, tilts, leaks, or will not retract with steady hand pressure.
Step 14: Install the New Brake Pads
- Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad ears where they contact the stainless-steel hardware.
- Keep lubricant completely off the rotor and pad friction material.
- Install the inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand, matching the original wear-indicator orientation.
- Verify that both pads can move in the hardware without binding.
Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the mechanic’s wire and lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Do not force the caliper or twist the brake hose.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 18mm six-point socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the bolts.
- Torque the caliper guide-pin bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Repeat the Repair on the Opposite Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the other front wheel using the same listed tools.
- Compare both completed sides before installing the wheels. Confirm that every bolt, clip, boot, and pad is correctly positioned.
Step 17: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Install both wheels and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 22mm deep impact socket and 1/2-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise your Suburban slightly, remove the 6-ton jack stands, and lower it until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 22mm deep impact socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque the wheel nuts to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
Step 18: Restore Brake Pedal Pressure
- Before starting the engine, slowly press and release the brake pedal several times until it becomes firm.
- Do not move your Suburban until the pedal is firm.
- Check the reservoir and adjust the level with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid. Do not fill above the MAX line.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Inspect both calipers, hoses, bleeder screws, and the ground beneath your Suburban for brake-fluid leaks.
- 🚦 Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain steady and must not sink toward the floor.
- 🛞 Perform a cautious test at walking speed before entering normal traffic. Verify that your Suburban stops straight without scraping or unusual noise.
- 🔥 Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h. Allow about 30 seconds of driving between stops and avoid activating ABS.
