📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Colorado on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🛞 Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck. Do not remove them yet.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. If it is filled to the top, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the caliper pistons.
  • 📌 A caliper is the clamp that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.
  • 📌 A rotor is the round metal disc behind the wheel.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 22mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts while the tire is still on the ground.
  • Loose first, lift second.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Colorado at the front frame/crossmember lift area.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame rails.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
  • Use the floor jack lightly under the lift point as a backup, but do not let it carry the vehicle weight.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 22mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 1/2-inch drive to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the front wheel and set it flat under the side of the truck as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Use safety glasses and look at how the pads, hardware clips, caliper, and rotor sit before taking anything apart.
  • Take a phone photo for reference.
  • Check the rubber brake hose. If it is cracked, swollen, or leaking, stop and replace the hose before driving.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Guide Pin Bolts

  • Use an 18mm socket with a ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the two caliper guide pin bolts.
  • A guide pin lets the caliper slide smoothly as the brake pads wear.
  • Hold the caliper steady by hand while removing the last bolt.

Step 6: Lift Off and Support the Caliper

  • Use a flathead screwdriver gently between the outer pad and rotor to create a little clearance if the caliper is tight.
  • Slide the caliper off the rotor by hand.
  • Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Remove the inner and outer brake pads by hand from the caliper bracket.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver if a pad is stuck in the hardware clips.
  • Note which pad has the wear indicator tab before removal.

Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a 19mm socket with a breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the caliper bracket and place it on a clean work surface.
  • These bolts are tight from the factory, so keep the socket straight on the bolt head.

Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub by hand.
  • If the rotor is stuck from rust, tap the rotor hat area with a rubber mallet.
  • Do not strike the wheel studs.
  • Rust makes rotors stubborn.

Step 10: Clean the Hub Face

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust and debris from the wheel hub face.
  • Use brake cleaner spray nozzle and a catch pan to rinse the hub area.
  • The hub face must be clean so the new rotor sits flat and does not cause brake pedal pulsation.

Step 11: Clean and Install the New Rotor

  • Use brake cleaner spray nozzle to clean both sides of the new rotor.
  • Wipe the rotor dry with a clean lint-free towel.
  • Slide the new rotor onto the hub by hand.
  • Thread one lug nut on by hand to hold the rotor flat while you work.

Step 12: Service the Caliper Bracket Hardware

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the old brake hardware clips from the caliper bracket.
  • Use a wire brush and brake parts cleaning brush to clean the bracket where the clips sit.
  • Install the new hardware clips by hand until they snap fully into place.
  • Apply a thin layer of high-temperature brake lubricant only where the pad ears touch the hardware clips.
  • Do not get grease on the rotor or pad friction material.

Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Place the caliper bracket over the rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Torque to 200 Nm (148 ft-lbs)

Step 14: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use a disc brake caliper piston compressor (specialty) to slowly press the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • A piston is the round metal part that pushes the brake pad when you press the brake pedal.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing. If the fluid level rises too high, remove excess fluid before it overflows.
  • Compress slowly to protect the brake hydraulic system.

Step 15: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Install the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad ears sit correctly inside the new hardware clips.
  • The friction material must face the rotor.
  • Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature brake lubricant to the pad backing contact points only if the pad kit calls for it.

Step 16: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the bungee cord and slide the caliper over the new pads.
  • Start both guide pin bolts by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the guide pin bolts.
  • Torque to 42 Nm (31 ft-lbs)

Step 17: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 16 on the opposite front wheel.
  • Use the same tools and parts on the other side.
  • Always replace front brake pads and rotors in pairs.

Step 18: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
  • Install the wheels by hand.
  • Start all lug nuts by hand before tightening.
  • Use a 22mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 19: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the truck until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use a 22mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs)

Step 20: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Before starting or moving your Colorado, press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
  • If you skip this, the brake pedal may go low on the first push.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed with the correct brake fluid listed on the reservoir cap.
  • ✅ Start your Colorado and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm and steady.
  • ✅ Test the brakes at very low speed in a safe area before driving normally.
  • ✅ Listen for scraping, grinding, or clicking. Stop and recheck your work if you hear anything unusual.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive.
  • ✅ Bed in the new brakes: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 35 mph down to 5 mph, allowing cooling time between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless it is an emergency.
