- 🧰 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is near the MAX line, use the brake-fluid syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the caliper pistons.
- 🔩 A breaker bar is a long, non-ratcheting handle that provides extra leverage for tight bolts.
- 🔧 A caliper hanger is a strong hook that supports the caliper without pulling on its brake hose.
- 📱 No infotainment setting, scan-tool command, coding, or electronic parking-brake service mode is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the nuts while your Pathfinder is still on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the 3-ton floor jack at the reinforced front-center lifting point on the front subframe.
- Place the 3-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced left and right front support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands. Give it a light push to verify that it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching the lifting point as an additional safeguard.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and slide them beneath the side rails as an additional safety measure.
- Work on one side at a time so the assembled side remains available as a reference.
Step 4: Create Space for the New Pads
- Turn the steering wheel so the caliper on the side being serviced faces outward.
- Use the large flat-blade screwdriver between the old inboard pad and rotor to push the caliper pistons inward slightly.
- Apply slow, steady pressure. Watch the brake-fluid reservoir and use the brake-fluid syringe if the level approaches MAX.
- Slow pressure protects the piston seals.
Step 5: Remove the Brake Caliper
- Use the 14mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper from the pads. Use the brake caliper hanger to suspend it from the strut spring.
- Inspect the rubber brake hose for cracks, swelling, twisting, or wetness.
- Do not disconnect the brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
- Remove the stainless-steel pad clips from the bracket using the large flat-blade screwdriver.
- Note the position of each wear indicator before removing the old pads.
- Use the small nylon detailing brush and brake cleaner to remove loose debris without creating airborne dust.
Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 22mm socket, 1/2-inch breaker bar, and 6-inch extension to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
- Hold the bracket securely because it is heavy.
- Inspect the slide-pin boots for splits or looseness.
Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub.
- If rust holds it in place, spray brake cleaner around the hub area and strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs with the rubber mallet.
- Do not strike the wheel studs or the braking surface needed for comparison.
- Use the hand wire brush to clean rust from the hub face and center pilot.
- Wipe the hub with brake cleaner and disposable shop towels. The new rotor must sit completely flat.
Step 9: Prepare and Install the New Rotor
- Use brake cleaner and disposable shop towels to clean both friction surfaces of the new rotor.
- Install the rotor over the wheel studs and seat it against the hub.
- Thread one wheel nut on by hand to hold the rotor in position. Do not tighten it with a tool.
Step 10: Service the Caliper Bracket
- Use the hand wire brush to clean the bracket channels where the stainless-steel pad clips sit.
- Install the new pad hardware by hand. Make sure every clip is fully seated.
- Remove one slide pin at a time by hand, wipe it with a disposable shop towel, and inspect it for rust or scoring.
- Apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake grease to the smooth portion of each slide pin, then reinstall it by hand.
- Do not use petroleum grease because it can damage the rubber boots.
- Confirm that both slide pins move smoothly and their boots are properly seated.
Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the bracket over the new rotor and install both bracket bolts by hand.
- Use the 22mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten both bolts to 185 Nm (136 ft-lbs).
- Do not apply grease or anti-seize to the bolt threads.
Step 12: Install the New Brake Pads
- Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake grease to the pad ears where they touch the stainless-steel clips.
- Apply a thin layer to the metal pad backing plates where they contact the caliper and pistons.
- Keep all grease away from the rotor and pad friction material.
- Install the inner and outer pads by hand with the wear indicators positioned the same way as the original pads.
- Confirm that the pads slide smoothly in the bracket without binding.
Step 13: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Place an old brake pad across both caliper pistons.
- Use the brake caliper piston compressor to push both pistons fully and evenly into the caliper.
- Monitor the reservoir while compressing the pistons. Use the brake-fluid syringe if the fluid approaches MAX.
- Stop if either piston tilts, binds, or leaks.
Step 14: Reinstall the Brake Caliper
- Remove the brake caliper hanger and lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Make sure the brake hose is not twisted and both slide-pin boots remain properly seated.
- Install the two slide-pin bolts by hand.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the slide-pin bolts to 32 Nm (24 ft-lbs).
- Remove the temporary wheel nut using the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar.
Step 15: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 14 on the opposite front brake using the same listed tools.
- Verify that both sides have new rotors, pads, hardware, and properly torqued fasteners.
Step 16: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise your Pathfinder slightly, remove the 3-ton jack stands, and lower it to the ground.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Restore Brake-Pedal Pressure
- Before starting the engine, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- Use the brake-fluid syringe only if excess fluid must be removed. Keep the reservoir level between MIN and MAX.
- If fluid is needed, add only fresh DOT 3 brake fluid from a sealed bottle.
- Do not drive if the pedal remains soft or sinks toward the floor.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine and press the brake pedal. It should remain firm under steady pressure.
- ✅ Check around both front calipers and brake hoses for fluid leaks.
- ✅ Confirm that the brake warning and ABS warning lamps turn off normally.
- ✅ Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
- ✅ Follow the brake-pad manufacturer's bedding procedure. If none is supplied, make 6-8 moderate stops from about 50 km/h to 10 km/h without activating ABS, then drive for 10 minutes to cool the brakes.
- ✅ Avoid holding the brake pedal firmly while stopped immediately after bedding because hot pads can transfer material unevenly.
- ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 300-500 km unless needed for safety.
- ✅ Recheck the wheel-nut torque at 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs) after 80-160 km.
