🔧 Escape - Front Brake Pads and Rotor Replacement

This is a manageable first brake job if you have sturdy jack stands and a torque wrench. You’ll replace both front rotors and the complete front pad set, clean the mounting surfaces, lubricate the correct contact points, and properly tighten every fastener.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

Assumption: This procedure covers the stock front brake system. HowToo will match the correct rotor diameter and pad shape to your Escape.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Escape with jack stands on solid, level ground. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Chock both rear wheels and keep the transmission in Park.
  • ⚠️ Don’t press the brake pedal while either front caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Hang each caliper securely. Never let it pull on the rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust can be harmful. Don’t blow it away with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease, oil, and dirty fingerprints off the pad faces and rotor friction surfaces.
  • ⚠️ No electronic parking-brake service mode is needed because you’re servicing the front brakes.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection isn’t required.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park on level pavement, shift into Park, shut off the engine, and apply the parking brake.
  • 📋 Place wheel chocks firmly behind both rear tires.
  • 📋 Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir. Clean around its cap before opening it.
  • 📋 Check the fluid level before compressing the caliper pistons. Remove a little fluid with a clean suction tool if the reservoir is already at the maximum line.
  • 📋 Don’t leave the reservoir open longer than necessary. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Don’t completely remove the nuts while the tires are on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front

  • Use the 2-ton floor jack at the approved front lifting point.
  • Place the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side lifting points.
  • Lower your Escape gently onto the stands, then give the body a firm push to confirm it’s stable.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket to remove the lug nuts and both front wheels.

Step 3: Remove the Brake Caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel so the caliper you’re servicing faces outward for easier access.
  • Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • A guide pin is the smooth pin that lets the caliper slide as the brakes apply.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use the large flat-blade screwdriver carefully if it needs gentle help.
  • Support the caliper with the caliper hanger hook. Don’t twist or stretch the brake hose.

Step 4: Remove the Old Pads

  • Pull both old pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the large flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless pad clips.
  • Compare the pads from both sides. Uneven wear can indicate a seized guide pin or sticking caliper.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
  • The bracket may be tight. Keep the socket completely seated and pull smoothly rather than jerking it.
  • Remove the bracket and place it on a clean work surface.

Step 6: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub.
  • If it’s rusted in place, use the rubber mallet to strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs.
  • Don’t strike the studs or the thin outer edge of the rotor.
  • Rust usually argues before it leaves.

Step 7: Clean the Hub and New Rotor

  • Use the small wire brush to remove rust from the flat hub face.
  • Keep the wheel studs and hub center clean and undamaged.
  • Spray the new rotor’s friction surfaces with brake parts cleaner and wipe them dry using shop towels.
  • Install the new rotor over the wheel studs.
  • Thread one lug nut on by hand to keep the rotor seated while you work.

Step 8: Prepare the Caliper Bracket

  • Use the small wire brush and brake parts cleaner to clean the areas where the new pad clips sit.
  • Install the new clips fully into the bracket.
  • Pull each guide pin out one at a time. Wipe it clean with a shop towel.
  • Apply a thin coating of silicone-based brake caliper grease and reinstall the pin without twisting its rubber boot.
  • Make sure both pins slide smoothly by hand.

Step 9: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the bracket over the new rotor and start both bolts by hand.
  • Use the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten both bracket bolts.

Step 10: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Apply a very thin film of silicone-based brake caliper grease where the pad ears contact the stainless clips.
  • Don’t put grease on the pad material or rotor.
  • Install the inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Confirm that both pads can move slightly in the bracket without binding.

Step 11: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place an old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use the disc brake piston compression tool or 6-inch C-clamp to push the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing it. Stop if fluid approaches the top.
  • Inspect the rubber piston boot. It must not be pinched, torn, or folded.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Place the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten them.

Step 13: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
  • Install each wheel and start all lug nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise your Escape slightly, remove the stands, and lower it until the tires touch the ground.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Before starting the engine, slowly press and release the brake pedal several times until it becomes firm.
  • ✅ Never shift out of Park if the pedal still travels close to the floor.
  • ✅ Check the brake-fluid level and adjust it only with the specified fluid. Don’t overfill it.
  • ✅ Look behind both front wheels for leaking fluid, twisted hoses, loose bolts, or anything touching the rotor.
