📋 Before You Begin
- 📋 Park on level pavement, shift into Park, shut off the engine, and apply the parking brake.
- 📋 Place wheel chocks firmly behind both rear tires.
- 📋 Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir. Clean around its cap before opening it.
- 📋 Check the fluid level before compressing the caliper pistons. Remove a little fluid with a clean suction tool if the reservoir is already at the maximum line.
- 📋 Don’t leave the reservoir open longer than necessary. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about one-quarter turn.
- Don’t completely remove the nuts while the tires are on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at the approved front lifting point.
- Place the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side lifting points.
- Lower your Escape gently onto the stands, then give the body a firm push to confirm it’s stable.
- Use the 21mm deep socket to remove the lug nuts and both front wheels.
Step 3: Remove the Brake Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel so the caliper you’re servicing faces outward for easier access.
- Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- A guide pin is the smooth pin that lets the caliper slide as the brakes apply.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use the large flat-blade screwdriver carefully if it needs gentle help.
- Support the caliper with the caliper hanger hook. Don’t twist or stretch the brake hose.
Step 4: Remove the Old Pads
- Pull both old pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the large flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless pad clips.
- Compare the pads from both sides. Uneven wear can indicate a seized guide pin or sticking caliper.
Step 5: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
- The bracket may be tight. Keep the socket completely seated and pull smoothly rather than jerking it.
- Remove the bracket and place it on a clean work surface.
Step 6: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub.
- If it’s rusted in place, use the rubber mallet to strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs.
- Don’t strike the studs or the thin outer edge of the rotor.
- Rust usually argues before it leaves.
Step 7: Clean the Hub and New Rotor
- Use the small wire brush to remove rust from the flat hub face.
- Keep the wheel studs and hub center clean and undamaged.
- Spray the new rotor’s friction surfaces with brake parts cleaner and wipe them dry using shop towels.
- Install the new rotor over the wheel studs.
- Thread one lug nut on by hand to keep the rotor seated while you work.
Step 8: Prepare the Caliper Bracket
- Use the small wire brush and brake parts cleaner to clean the areas where the new pad clips sit.
- Install the new clips fully into the bracket.
- Pull each guide pin out one at a time. Wipe it clean with a shop towel.
- Apply a thin coating of silicone-based brake caliper grease and reinstall the pin without twisting its rubber boot.
- Make sure both pins slide smoothly by hand.
Step 9: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the bracket over the new rotor and start both bolts by hand.
- Use the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten both bracket bolts.

Step 10: Install the New Brake Pads
- Apply a very thin film of silicone-based brake caliper grease where the pad ears contact the stainless clips.
- Don’t put grease on the pad material or rotor.
- Install the inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
- Confirm that both pads can move slightly in the bracket without binding.
Step 11: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place an old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the disc brake piston compression tool or 6-inch C-clamp to push the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing it. Stop if fluid approaches the top.
- Inspect the rubber piston boot. It must not be pinched, torn, or folded.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper
- Place the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten them.

Step 13: Reinstall the Wheels

- Install each wheel and start all lug nuts by hand.
