This repair replaces the front brake pads and front brake rotors on your TITAN. The pads create stopping friction, and the rotors are the metal discs the pads clamp onto; replacing both together helps prevent vibration, noise, and uneven braking.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your TITAN on level ground and shift into Park.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🛞 Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
  • 🧰 A caliper is the part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor to stop the truck.
  • 🧰 A slide pin lets the caliper move smoothly as the brakes apply and release.
  • 🧰 A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct tightness so they are not loose or over-tightened.
  • 🧴 Open the brake fluid reservoir cap under the hood before compressing the caliper pistons. Lay a towel around it in case fluid rises.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen while tires touch ground.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your TITAN at the front crossmember or proper front lifting point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame support points.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching as a backup support.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat under the truck as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use brake cleaner spray to lightly clean dust from the caliper, pads, and rotor area.
  • Look at the brake hose and ABS wire. Make sure you know where they are before moving the caliper.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Slide Pin Bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts on the back of the caliper.
  • Pull the caliper straight off the pads.
  • Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.

Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Note the position of any wear indicator tab before removal.
  • Remove the old stainless pad clips from the bracket by hand or with the flathead screwdriver.

Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • The caliper bracket is the heavy metal holder bolted around the rotor.
  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Set the bracket aside.
  • These bolts are very tight from the factory, so use steady pressure.

Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Pull the old rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
  • If it is stuck from rust, tap the rotor hat area with a rubber mallet.
  • Do not hit the wheel studs directly.
  • Rotate rotor while tapping evenly.

Step 9: Clean the Hub Face

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust and scale from the wheel hub face.
  • Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to wipe the hub clean.
  • This step helps prevent brake pedal pulsation from rotor wobble.

Step 10: Install the New Rotor

  • Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and wipe it dry with shop towels.
  • Slide the new rotor onto the wheel studs.
  • Thread one lug nut on by hand to hold the rotor flat against the hub.

Step 11: Service the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a wire brush to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
  • Install the new clips from the front brake hardware kit by hand.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the clips.
  • Do not get lubricant on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Place the caliper bracket over the rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench 50-250 ft-lb and 22mm socket to tighten the caliper bracket bolts to Torque to 210 Nm (155 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Compress the Caliper Pistons

  • Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood. If the fluid is near the top, remove a small amount with a clean towel or suction tool before compressing the pistons.
  • Place an old brake pad against the pistons.
  • Use the brake caliper piston compressor tool to slowly push the pistons fully back into the caliper.
  • Go slowly so brake fluid does not overflow.

Step 14: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Slide the new front brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
  • Apply a very thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad ears only.
  • Do not lubricate the pad friction surface.

Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the bungee cord and slide the caliper over the new pads.
  • Start both slide pin bolts by hand.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench 10-150 ft-lb and 14mm socket to tighten the slide pin bolts to Torque to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the opposite front wheel.
  • Always replace front brake pads and rotors in pairs.

Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
  • Install each wheel onto the wheel studs.
  • Thread all lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 18: Lower and Torque the Wheels

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the truck until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the torque wrench 50-250 ft-lb and 21mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 133 Nm (98 ft-lbs).

Step 19: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Before moving the truck, press the brake pedal slowly 5-10 times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back against the new pads.
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir and install the cap securely.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your TITAN and press the brake pedal. It should feel firm, not sink to the floor.
  • ✅ Check around both front calipers for brake fluid leaks.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Bed in the new brakes: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 35-40 mph down to 10 mph, allowing short cooling time between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive: Torque to 133 Nm (98 ft-lbs).
