This repair replaces the front brake pads and both front rotors on your Sienna. New pads and rotors restore smooth braking and help correct vibration, grinding, or reduced stopping performance.

๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ Park your Sienna on level pavement, shift into Park, switch off the engine, and firmly apply the parking brake.
- ๐งฑ Place wheel chocks securely in front of and behind one rear tire.
- ๐ก๏ธ Let the brakes cool completely before touching the calipers or rotors.
- ๐งฐ Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall. Clean around its cap with a lint-free shop towel.
- ๐ฑ No infotainment service mode, scan tool, electronic parking-brake retraction, battery registration, or ADAS calibration is required.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts while your Sienna is still on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Place the front lifting floor jack rated 2-ton minimum beneath the reinforced front-center lifting point on the front subframe.
- Raise the front until both tires clear the ground.
- Position the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the reinforced side pinch-weld support points behind the front wheels.
- Lower your Sienna slowly onto the stands. Gently push the body to verify that it is stable.
Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and slide them beneath the side rails as an additional safety measure.
Step 4: Check the Brake-Fluid Level
- Use a clean lint-free shop towel to clean the reservoir cap before opening it.
- Remove the cap by hand and place the drain pan with 2-quart capacity beneath the reservoir area as spill protection.
- If the reservoir is at the MAX line, leave the cap resting loosely in place and monitor the level while compressing the pistons.
- Do not allow brake fluid to overflow. Brake fluid removed from the reservoir must not be reused.
Step 5: Remove the First Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel to improve access to the side being serviced.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper away from the pads. If it sticks, use the flat-tip screwdriver with 6-inch shaft carefully between the old pad and rotor to create slight clearance.
- Support the caliper from the suspension spring with the caliper hanger rated 50 lb minimum.
- A caliper hanger is a strong hook that supports the caliper without straining its brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use the flat-tip screwdriver with 6-inch shaft to carefully remove the stainless-steel pad-support clips.
- Note the position of the wear indicator before discarding the old pads. Install the new pad with its indicator in the matching position.
- Use the plastic trim tool with flat edge if a pad shim remains stuck to the caliper or bracket.
Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 17mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
- Support the bracket as the final bolt is removed.
- Clean the exposed pad-contact areas with the small brass-bristle brush and non-chlorinated brake cleaner.
- Do not grind or remove metal from the bracket.
Step 8: Inspect and Lubricate the Slide Pins
- Pull each slide pin and rubber boot from the bracket by hand, keeping the upper and lower pins in their original positions.
- Use the clean lint-free shop towels and non-chlorinated brake cleaner to remove old grease from the pins.
- Inspect for rust, deep pitting, torn boots, or pins that bind. Replace damaged components before continuing.
- Apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake grease to each pin, then reinstall it with its boot fully seated.
- Move each pin by hand. It must slide smoothly without sticking.
- Use only rubber-safe silicone brake grease.
Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If rust holds it in place, strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs with the rubber mallet with 16-ounce head.
- Do not strike the wheel studs, hub center, brake hose, or dust shield.
- If the rotor remains stuck, rotate it and repeat light blows around the hat until it releases.
Step 10: Clean the Hub
- Wear the ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
- Use the small brass-bristle brush to remove rust from the flat hub face and hub-center pilot.
- Use the small nylon-bristle brush, non-chlorinated brake cleaner, and clean lint-free shop towels to remove loose residue.
- The new rotor must sit completely flat against the hub. Rust trapped behind it can cause brake-pedal vibration.
Step 11: Install the New Rotor
- Clean both friction faces of the new rotor with non-chlorinated brake cleaner and clean lint-free shop towels.
- Slide the rotor over the wheel studs until it sits flush against the hub.
- Temporarily thread one wheel nut onto a stud by hand, flat side toward the rotor, to hold it in place.
Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the bracket over the rotor and start both mounting bolts by hand.
- Use the 17mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench rated 20-150 ft-lbs to tighten both bolts.
- Torque to 107 Nm (79 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Install New Pad Hardware and Pads
- Press the new stainless-steel pad-support clips fully into the bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake grease to the pad ears where they contact the clips.
- Apply a thin film to the metal backs of the pads only where they contact the caliper and piston.
- Do not apply grease to the rotor or pad friction surfaces.
- Slide the new inner and outer pads into the bracket. They should move without excessive force.
Step 14: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Place one old brake pad across both caliper pistons.
- Use the disc brake piston compressor to press both pistons slowly and evenly into the caliper.
- A piston compressor is a screw-operated tool that pushes the caliper pistons straight inward.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the pistons. Stop immediately if fluid approaches the top.
- Inspect the piston dust boots and make sure they do not twist, tear, or become trapped.
Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the caliper hanger rated 50 lb minimum and lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Make sure the brake hose is not twisted and the slide-pin boots are seated correctly.
- Start both slide-pin bolts by hand.
- Use the 14mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench rated 20-150 ft-lbs to tighten the bolts.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 15 on the other front brake assembly using the same listed tools.
- Compare both finished assemblies before reinstalling the wheels. Hardware, wear indicators, and brake hoses should be positioned consistently.
Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels
- Remove the temporary wheel nuts holding the rotors.
- Install both front wheels and start every wheel nut by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the front lifting floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to raise your Sienna slightly, remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum, and lower the tires to the ground.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench rated 20-150 ft-lbs to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 18: Set the Pads Against the Rotors
- With the engine off, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- Do not move your Sienna until the pedal is firm.
- Check the reservoir level. Add Toyota-compatible DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below the correct range.
- Install the reservoir cap securely and use a clean lint-free shop towel to wipe the area.
โ After Repair
- โ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain stable and should not sink toward the floor.
- โ Look around both calipers for fluid leaks, loose parts, twisted hoses, or hardware touching the rotors.
- โ Perform an initial brake test at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area.
- โ Follow the brake-pad manufacturer's bedding procedure. If none is supplied, make 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h without stopping completely, then drive for 10 minutes to cool the brakes.
- โ Avoid hard emergency-style stops while bedding the pads unless necessary for safety.
- โ Do not hold the brake pedal down while stopped immediately after bedding. Hot pads can leave uneven deposits on the rotors.
- โ Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km of driving.
- โ If the pedal remains soft, the vehicle pulls strongly, or fluid is leaking, do not drive your Sienna.
