- 📋 Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir. Clean around its cap before opening it.
- 📋 If the fluid is at the MAX line, use the brake-fluid extractor to remove a small amount. Pushing the caliper pistons inward raises the fluid level.
- 📋 No infotainment service mode, scan tool, or battery disconnect is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 21mm deep socket and breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts while your 4Runner is still on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front End
- Position the 3-ton floor jack beneath the front crossmember and raise the front of your 4Runner.
- Place the 3-ton jack stands beneath the approved left and right frame support points.
- Lower your 4Runner onto the stands, then gently test that it is stable.
Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
Step 4: Remove the Brake Pad Retaining Hardware
- Work on one side at a time so the assembled side remains a reference.
- Place the drain pan below the brake assembly, then clean the caliper with non-chlorinated brake cleaner.
- Use needle-nose pliers to remove the small retaining clips from the ends of the two pad pins.
- Hold the anti-rattle spring while using the 3mm pin punch and ball-peen hammer to tap out both pad pins.
- Remove the anti-rattle spring and note its installed direction.
- Take a photo before removing the hardware.
Step 5: Retract the Four Caliper Pistons
- Use the four-piston brake caliper spreader to press the pads outward gently, which pushes the pistons evenly into the caliper.
- A caliper spreader is a tool that presses the caliper pistons inward without twisting or damaging them.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir and use the brake-fluid extractor if the level approaches the top.
- Stop if a piston is seized, a dust boot is torn, or brake fluid leaks from the caliper.
Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Pull both pads and their shims out through the rear opening of the caliper.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver only for gentle assistance if a pad is stuck. Do not damage the piston boots.
- Inspect the old pads. Strongly tapered or uneven wear can indicate a sticking piston or damaged hardware.
Step 7: Remove and Support the Caliper
- Use the 19mm socket and breaker bar to remove the two caliper mounting bolts from the back of the steering knuckle.
- Lift the complete caliper from the rotor without pulling or twisting the brake hose.
- Support the caliper from the suspension with the caliper support hook.
- Do not disconnect the brake hose. The hydraulic system should remain sealed.
Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If corrosion holds it in place, thread the two M8 x 1.25 rotor removal bolts evenly into the rotor's threaded extraction holes.
- Use the 1/2-inch drive ratchet to alternate between the two bolts until the rotor releases. Do not tighten one bolt fully before the other.
Step 9: Clean and Inspect the Hub
- Use the wheel-hub wire brush to remove rust and debris from the hub face.
- Wipe the hub clean with brake cleaner and confirm that no raised rust remains. The new rotor must sit completely flat.
- Use the rotor micrometer to check the removed rotor if desired. Toyota's front rotor discard thickness is approximately 29.0mm; replace any rotor at or below the marked minimum specification.
- A clean hub helps prevent brake-pedal vibration.
Step 10: Install the New Rotor
- Use brake cleaner and nitrile mechanic gloves to remove protective oil from both friction surfaces of the new rotor.
- Slide the rotor fully onto the clean hub.
- Temporarily install two lug nuts by hand to hold the rotor flat while the caliper is installed.
Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper
- Position the caliper over the new rotor without twisting the brake hose.
- Install the two caliper mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten both mounting bolts to 123 Nm (91 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Prepare and Install the New Pads
- Fit the new anti-squeal shims to the new pads in the same arrangement as the original parts.
- Apply a thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad ears and shim contact areas only.
- Keep lubricant completely off the rotor, pad friction material, piston boots, and pad faces.
- Slide the inner and outer pads fully into the caliper.
Step 13: Install the Pad Pins and Spring
- Position the new anti-rattle spring in its original direction.
- Insert both pad pins through the caliper, pads, and spring.
- Use the 3mm pin punch and ball-peen hammer to seat the pins gently.
- Use needle-nose pliers to install the retaining clips securely in the pad-pin holes.
- Confirm that both pads can move slightly and all retaining hardware is fully seated.
Step 14: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same tools and steps to replace the opposite front rotor and brake pads.
- Confirm both caliper mounting bolts are tightened to 123 Nm (91 ft-lbs) on each side.
Step 15: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Remove any temporary lug nuts, then install each wheel.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand before using the 21mm deep socket and ratchet to snug them in a star pattern.
- Raise your 4Runner slightly with the 3-ton floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the tires to the ground.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Restore Brake Pedal Pressure
- Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
- Do not move your 4Runner until a firm pedal is obtained.
- Check the brake-fluid reservoir and add fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below MAX.
- Install the reservoir cap securely.

- ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal. The pedal should remain steady rather than sinking toward the floor.
- ✅ Inspect both front calipers and brake hoses for leaks or twisted hoses.
- ✅ At very low speed, test the brakes in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
- ✅ Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h. Do not come to a complete stop between applications.
- ✅ Drive for several minutes afterward with minimal braking to cool the brakes. Avoid hard braking or holding the hot brakes at a stop for about 300 km.
- ✅ Recheck the brake-fluid level and wheel lug torque after the road test.
