  • 🅿️ Shift the transmission to Park and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • 🧤 Put on safety glasses and gloves before lifting the truck.
  • 📘 A brake caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.
  • 📘 A rotor is the round metal disc behind the wheel that the brake pads press against.
  • 📘 A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct tightness so parts are secure without being over-tightened.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm impact socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen wheels before lifting.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front frame crossmember or approved front frame lift point.
  • Raise the front of your F-150 high enough for both front wheels to clear the ground.
  • Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front frame rails.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
  • Lightly shake the truck by hand to confirm it is stable before working.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm impact socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Fluid Level

  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall.
  • Use a flashlight if needed to check the fluid level through the reservoir.
  • If the reservoir is completely full, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the caliper pistons.
  • Keep a catch pan and rags nearby in case fluid rises.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Slide Pin Bolts

  • Turn the steering wheel to give yourself better access to the caliper.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
  • The slide pins are the small bolts that let the caliper move in and out smoothly.
  • Set the bolts aside in order so they go back in the same locations.

Step 6: Remove and Support the Brake Caliper

  • Use a flat blade screwdriver to gently pry the caliper outward slightly.
  • Lift the caliper off the brake pads and rotor.
  • Use a brake caliper hanger (specialty) to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
  • Do not stretch, kink, or twist the brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use a flat blade screwdriver if a pad is stuck in the bracket.
  • Notice how the inner and outer pads sit before removing them.
  • Take a quick photo first.

Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Hold the bracket with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Remove the bracket and set it on your work surface.

Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Slide the brake rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
  • If the rotor is stuck from rust, tap the rotor hat area with a dead blow hammer.
  • The rotor hat is the raised center area of the rotor around the wheel studs.
  • Do not hit the wheel studs.

Step 10: Clean the Hub Surface

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust from the wheel hub face.
  • Use brake parts cleaner spray and a catch pan to rinse the hub area.
  • The new rotor must sit flat against the hub to prevent brake vibration.
  • Clean hub equals smooth brakes.

Step 11: Install the New Rotor

  • Clean both sides of the new rotor using brake parts cleaner spray over a catch pan.
  • Slide the new rotor onto the wheel studs.
  • Install one lug nut by hand backward to hold the rotor in place while you work.

Step 12: Service the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a flat blade screwdriver to remove the old pad hardware clips from the caliper bracket.
  • Use a wire brush to clean the bracket lands where the clips sit.
  • Install the new hardware clips by hand until fully seated.
  • Apply a thin film of brake lubricant to the pad contact areas on the clips.
  • Do not get lubricant on the rotor or brake pad friction surface.

Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Place the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Torque to 184 Nm (136 ft-lbs)

Step 14: Compress the Caliper Pistons

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper pistons.
  • Use a brake caliper piston compressor (specialty) to slowly push the pistons fully back into the caliper.
  • A piston is the round metal part that pushes the brake pad when you press the brake pedal.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the pistons so it does not overflow.
  • If fluid rises too high, stop and remove a small amount safely.

Step 15: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Install the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad ears sit correctly in the new hardware clips.
  • The pad friction material must face the rotor.
  • Apply a light coat of brake lubricant only to the pad backing plate contact points if required by the pad design.

Step 16: Reinstall the Brake Caliper

  • Remove the brake caliper hanger (specialty) and lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Start both slide pin bolts by hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the slide pin bolts.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)

Step 17: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 16 on the other front wheel.
  • Replace the pads and rotor on both sides before driving.

Step 18: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
  • Install each wheel onto the studs.
  • Thread all lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use a 21mm impact socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 19: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift your F-150 slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Lower the truck until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use a 21mm impact socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs)

Step 20: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back against the new pads.
  • Do not skip this step. The pedal may go low the first time after brake service.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed with the correct brake fluid listed on the reservoir cap.
  • ✅ Start the engine and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm and steady.
  • ✅ Check behind both front wheels for brake fluid leaks.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Bed in the new brakes if the pad manufacturer recommends it. Bedding-in means making controlled stops to transfer an even layer of pad material onto the rotors.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 50-100 miles.
