This repair replaces the front brake pads and rotors on your F-150. The pads are the friction blocks, and the rotors are the metal discs they clamp onto to stop the truck.

๐ Before You Begin
- ๐ Park your F-150 on a flat surface and shift to Park.
- ๐ Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind both rear tires.
- ๐ฉ Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
- ๐งฐ A caliper is the clamp that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.
- ๐งฐ A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct factory tightness.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen first, lift second.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front End
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of the truck at the approved front jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front frame rails.
- Lower the truck onto the jack stands and make sure it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the front lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat aside.
Step 4: Remove the Front Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel toward the side you are working on for more room.
- Use a 13mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
- Slide the caliper off the rotor.
- Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 5: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Use your hands or a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old inner and outer brake pads from the caliper bracket.
- Note if one pad is much thinner than the other. That can mean a sticking caliper slide pin.
Step 6: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the caliper bracket from the steering knuckle.
Step 7: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub by hand.
- If it is stuck, use a rubber mallet to tap around the rotor hat until it breaks loose.
- Do not hit the wheel studs.
- Rust may hold it tight.
Step 8: Clean the Hub Surface
- Use a wire brush to clean rust from the hub face.
- Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to wipe the surface clean.
- The new rotor must sit flat to prevent brake vibration.
Step 9: Install the New Rotor
- Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean both sides of the new rotor.
- Slide the new rotor onto the hub.
- Thread one lug nut on by hand to hold the rotor in place.
Step 10: Clean and Refit the Caliper Bracket
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old brake hardware clips.
- Use a wire brush to clean the bracket where the clips sit.
- Install the new brake hardware clips by hand.
- Remove the slide pins, wipe them with shop towels, and apply brake caliper slide pin grease.
- Slide pins are guide pins that let the caliper move smoothly.
Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Place the caliper bracket back over the rotor.
- Start both bracket bolts by hand.
- Use an 18mm socket and torque wrench rated to 200 ft-lbs to tighten the bracket bolts.
- Torque to 250 Nm (184 ft-lbs)
Step 12: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new inner and outer brake pads into the hardware clips by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- The pads should move smoothly in the clips.
- Do not force stuck pads.
Step 13: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Use a brake caliper piston compression tool to slowly push the caliper pistons fully back into the caliper.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood while compressing the pistons.
- If the fluid level gets too high, remove a small amount before it spills.
Step 14: Reinstall the Caliper
- Slide the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
- Start both caliper slide pin bolts by hand.
- Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench rated to 50 ft-lbs to tighten the slide pin bolts.
- Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs)
Step 15: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat the same steps on the other front brake.
- Front brakes must be replaced in pairs so braking stays even.
Step 16: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Remove the temporary lug nut from each rotor.
- Install both front wheels.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand first.
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 17: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the truck slightly.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the truck until the tires touch the ground.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench rated to 200 ft-lbs to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs)
Step 18: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before driving, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
- Do not drive if the pedal feels soft or sinks to the floor.
โ After Repair
- โ Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed with the brake fluid type listed on the reservoir cap.
- โ Start the engine and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm.
- โ Test drive slowly in a safe area before normal driving.
- โ Break in the pads with 8-10 medium stops from about 30-40 mph, allowing cooling time between stops.
- โ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless it is an emergency.
- โ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles: Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs)
