- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels so the truck cannot roll.
- 🛞 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck. Do not remove them yet.
- 🧴 Brake lubricant is a special high-temperature grease used only on brake contact points, not on pad friction material or rotor faces.
- 🔩 A caliper bracket is the heavy metal bracket that holds the brake pads and supports the caliper over the rotor.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about 1/2 turn.
- Do this while the tires are still touching the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Tip: Break them loose before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front frame crossmember or approved front frame lift point.
- Raise the front of your F-150 high enough for both front wheels to clear the ground.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame rails.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Lightly shake the truck by hand to confirm it is stable before working underneath or near the wheels.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.
Step 4: Remove the Brake Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel to give yourself more room on the side you are working on.
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the two front brake caliper slide pin bolts.
- Slide the caliper off the pads and rotor.
- Use a brake caliper hanger hook (specialty) or small bungee cord to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
Step 5: Remove the Old Brake Pads
- Use your hands or a flat-blade screwdriver to lift the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Note how the pads and metal hardware clips are positioned before removing them.
- Remove the old metal pad clips from the caliper bracket by hand or with the flat-blade screwdriver.
Step 6: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the caliper bracket and set it on a clean surface.
- These bolts are usually tight, so keep the socket straight on the bolt head.
Step 7: Remove the Old Rotor
- Slide the front brake rotor straight off the wheel hub by hand.
- If the rotor is stuck from rust, tap the rotor hat area with a dead blow hammer.
- Do not hit the wheel studs directly.
- Tip: Tap between the wheel studs.
Step 8: Clean the Hub Face
- Use a wire brush to clean rust and scale from the wheel hub face.
- Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to wipe the hub clean.
- This helps the new rotor sit flat and prevents brake vibration.
Step 9: Install the New Rotor
- Clean both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and shop towels to remove protective oil.
- Slide the new rotor onto the wheel studs.
- Thread one lug nut on by hand to hold the rotor flat while you work.
Step 10: Prepare the Caliper Bracket
- Use a wire brush to clean the areas where the brake hardware clips sit.
- Install the new clips from the front brake hardware kit into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad contact areas on the hardware clips.
- Do not get lubricant on the rotor face or pad friction surface.
Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
- Start both caliper bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use an 18mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
- Torque to 184 Nm (136 ft-lbs)
Step 12: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- The pads should move smoothly in the clips without being forced.
- If they bind, remove them and recheck the hardware clip seating.
Step 13: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper pistons.
- Use a brake caliper piston compressor (specialty) to slowly push the pistons fully back into the caliper.
- A piston compressor is a tool that pushes the caliper pistons back so the new thicker pads fit over the rotor.
- Compress slowly to avoid pushing brake fluid back too quickly.
Step 14: Reinstall the Brake Caliper
- Remove the brake caliper hanger hook (specialty) or small bungee cord.
- Slide the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
- Start both slide pin bolts by hand.
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the caliper slide pin bolts.
- Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs)
Step 15: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 14 on the opposite front brake.
- Always replace front pads and rotors in pairs so braking stays even.
Step 16: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Remove any temporary lug nut holding the rotor.
- Install the wheels onto the hubs.
- Start all lug nuts by hand.
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 17: Lower the Truck and Torque the Wheels
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Lower your F-150 until the tires touch the ground.
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs)
Step 18: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before moving the truck, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This seats the caliper pistons against the new pads.
- The first pedal push may go low. That is normal after compressing the pistons.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir and make sure it is between MIN and MAX.
- ✅ Start your F-150 and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm, not spongy.
- ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe area before normal driving.
- ✅ Listen for grinding, scraping, clicking, or pulling to one side.
- ✅ Bed in the new brakes: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 30-40 mph, allowing cooling time between stops.
- ✅ Avoid hard emergency-style braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
- ✅ Recheck front lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using the 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench.
