📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Avalon on firm, level ground. Shift to Park, engage the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
- 🧱 Place rubber wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
- 🔍 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is near MAX, use the fluid syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the pistons.
- 📱 No infotainment service mode or scan-tool command is required for the front brakes.
- 🔩 Leave the reservoir cap resting loosely in place to prevent contamination while allowing fluid movement.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 21mm impact-rated socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts while your Avalon is still on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at the front-center jacking point on the front suspension crossmember.
- Place the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced left and right front side support points.
- Lower your Avalon onto the stands, then gently push the body to verify that it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack nearby as backup support.
Step 3: Remove Both Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and slide them flat beneath the side rails as an additional precaution.
Step 4: Remove the First Caliper
- Turn the steering wheel so the caliper on the working side faces outward.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
- A slide pin lets the caliper move sideways as the pads wear.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use a caliper hanger hook to suspend it from the suspension spring.
- Do not twist, stretch, or pull the rubber brake hose.
Step 5: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Use the medium flat-blade screwdriver to carefully remove the inner and outer pads from the bracket.
- Note the location and direction of the pad wear indicator before removal.
- Use the medium flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless pad-support clips from the bracket.
- Do not press the brake pedal with the pads removed.
Step 6: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
- Hold the bracket securely because it is heavy.
Step 7: Remove the Old Rotor
- Pull the rotor straight off the wheel hub.
- If corrosion holds it in place, thread the two M8 x 1.25 rotor removal bolts evenly into the rotor’s threaded extraction holes.
- Use the 3/8-inch ratchet to alternate between the removal bolts until the rotor releases. Do not overtighten either bolt.
- Remove the extraction bolts after the rotor comes free.
Step 8: Clean the Hub and Bracket
- Use the small wire brush to remove rust and debris from the hub face.
- Use brake cleaner and the small nylon brake brush to clean the caliper bracket.
- Clean beneath the stainless pad-support clips so the new pads can move freely.
- Do not grind away hub metal or apply grease between the hub and rotor.
Step 9: Prepare and Install the New Rotor
- Use brake cleaner and the small nylon brake brush to clean both braking surfaces of the new rotor.
- Wipe away all protective shipping oil and allow the rotor to dry.
- Install the rotor fully against the clean hub.
- Temporarily install one wheel nut by hand to hold the rotor flat.
Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the bracket over the rotor and start both bolts by hand.
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten both bracket bolts to 107 Nm (79 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Install the New Pad Hardware
- Press the new stainless pad-support clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use a gloved fingertip to apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad tabs contact the clips.
- Do not put lubricant on the rotor or the friction side of either pad.
Step 12: Compress the Caliper Pistons
- Place an old brake pad across both caliper pistons.
- Use the 6-inch brake caliper piston compressor to push both pistons slowly and evenly into the caliper.
- Watch the reservoir while compressing the pistons. Use the fluid syringe if the fluid approaches the rim.
- If a piston binds, stop. Forcing it can damage the caliper or brake hose.
Step 13: Inspect the Slide Pins
- Pull each slide pin from the bracket by hand, one at a time, so their positions are not mixed.
- Use brake cleaner and the small nylon brake brush to remove old lubricant from each pin.
- Apply a thin, even coat of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant and reinstall each pin beneath its rubber boot.
- Confirm that each pin moves smoothly and that each boot is fully seated.
Step 14: Install the New Brake Pads
- Install the new inner and outer pads in the bracket by hand.
- Place the supplied wear indicator in the same position and direction as the original indicator.
- Confirm that both pads slide freely in the support clips without excessive looseness.
Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the caliper hanger hook and lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Do not force the caliper. Verify that both pistons are fully compressed if it does not fit.
- Start both slide-pin bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten both slide-pin bolts to 46 Nm (34 ft-lbs).
- Make sure the rubber brake hose is not twisted.
Step 16: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the other front brake assembly.
- Replace both rotors and all four front pads during the same repair.
Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels
- Remove the temporary wheel nut from each rotor by hand.
- Install each wheel and start all five wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise your Avalon slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the tires to the ground.
- Use the 21mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 18: Restore Brake Pedal Pressure
- With the engine off, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
- Do not move your Avalon until the pedal is firm.
- Inspect the brake-fluid level and adjust only with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid.
- If bleeding is unexpectedly required, attach the 8mm clear vinyl tubing and catch bottle to the bleeder screw. Do not drive until the hydraulic system has been correctly bled and the pedal is firm.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal. It should remain steady and must not sink toward the floor.
- 💧 Inspect both front calipers, hoses, and bleeder screws for fluid leakage.
- 🚗 Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
- 🛑 Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Allow about 30 seconds between stops and avoid coming to a complete stop with hot brakes.
- 🌡️ Drive for 5-10 minutes afterward with minimal braking to let the brakes cool.
- 📏 Recheck the brake-fluid level after the test drive. Keep it between MIN and MAX.
- 🔩 Recheck wheel-nut torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
