- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. Wheel chocks are wedge blocks that stop the truck from rolling.
- 🛞 Slightly loosen the front lug nuts with a 21mm lug nut socket before lifting the truck.
- 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. Clean around the cap with a shop rag, then loosen the cap.
- 📏 If the brake fluid level is already at the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the caliper piston to prevent overflow.
- 🔌 No infotainment menu, scan tool, EPB retraction, ADAS calibration, or battery registration is needed for this front brake job.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet. The tire should stay on the ground while breaking them loose.
- Loosen first, lift second.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the front center crossmember to raise the front of your Frontier.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the left and right front frame support points.
- Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands and gently shake the truck to confirm it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching the lift point as a backup.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.
- Slide one wheel under the frame as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Look at the brake caliper, brake hose, rotor, and pad thickness before removal.
- The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the pads against the rotor.
- If the brake hose is cracked, leaking, or twisted, do not continue until that is repaired.
Step 5: Remove the Caliper Slide Pin Bolts
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts from the back of the caliper.
- Slide pins let the caliper move evenly as the pads wear.
- Pull the caliper away from the rotor carefully.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
Step 6: Support the Caliper
- Use a bungee cord to hang the caliper from the front coil spring or upper suspension area.
- Make sure the rubber brake hose is not stretched, kinked, or twisted.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads

- If it is stuck from rust, lightly tap around the rotor hat with the handle of a 1/2-inch breaker bar.
- Do not hit the wheel studs.
- The rotor hat is the raised center section of the brake rotor.
Step 10: Clean the Hub Face
- Use a wire brush to clean rust and scale from the wheel hub face.
- Spray the area with brake parts cleaner spray and wipe it with shop rags.
- A clean hub helps the new rotor sit flat and prevents brake vibration.
- Clean metal makes smooth brakes.
Step 11: Prepare and Install the New Rotor
- Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake parts cleaner spray.
- Wipe the rotor dry with shop rags.
- Slide the new rotor onto the hub.
- Thread one lug nut on by hand using the 21mm lug nut socket to hold the rotor in place temporarily.
Step 12: Service the Caliper Bracket
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless brake hardware clips from the caliper bracket.
- Use a wire brush to clean the areas where the clips sit.
- Install the new clips from the front brake hardware kit by hand.
- Apply a thin layer of disc brake caliper slide pin grease to the pad contact points on the clips.
- Do not get grease on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.
Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Position the caliper bracket over the rotor.
- Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
- Torque to 152 Nm (112 ft-lbs)
Step 14: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use a brake caliper piston compressor tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
- The piston is the round metal part that pushes the inner brake pad.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing. Use shop rags to catch any overflow.
- If brake fluid spills, clean it immediately because it can damage paint.
Step 15: Install the New Brake Pads
- Install the new front brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
- If the pad set has a wear indicator, install it in the same position as the original pad.
- The pads should slide smoothly in the new hardware clips.
Step 16: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the bungee cord and carefully place the caliper over the new pads.
- Start both caliper slide pin bolts by hand.

Step 17: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 16 on the other front brake assembly.

Step 18: Reinstall the Wheels
- Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor using the 21mm lug nut socket.
- Install both front wheels.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand first.
- Snug the lug nuts in a star pattern using the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet.
Step 19: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the truck until the tires touch the ground fully.
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 133 Nm (98 ft-lbs)
Step 20: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Before driving, press the brake pedal slowly 5-10 times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back into normal position against the new pads.
- If the pedal stays soft or sinks, do not drive the truck.
Step 21: Check Brake Fluid Level
- Use safety glasses and check the brake fluid reservoir level.
- Add DOT 3 brake fluid if needed to bring the level between MIN and MAX.
- Reinstall the brake fluid reservoir cap tightly by hand.
- Wipe any spilled fluid with shop rags.
