📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Tacoma on level ground.
  • 🅿️ Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels. Wheel chocks are blocks that stop the truck from rolling.
  • 🔎 Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir. If it is filled to the very top, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the caliper pistons.
  • 🧼 Wash your hands before handling new brake pads and rotors.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each front lug nut about 1/2 turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.
  • Loose first, lift second.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the front center crossmember.
  • Raise the front of your Tacoma high enough for both front wheels to come off the ground.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the left and right front frame rails.
  • Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands.
  • Gently shake the truck by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the truck as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Look at the caliper, brake hose, rotor, and pad wear before taking anything apart.
  • The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.
  • If the brake hose is cracked, swollen, or leaking, stop and replace it before driving.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Slide Bolts

  • Use a 13mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the two caliper slide bolts.
  • The slide bolts are the smaller bolts on the back of the caliper that allow the caliper to move in and out.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 6: Hang the Caliper Safely

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver medium to gently lift the caliper off the brake pads.
  • Use a bungee cord 18-inch to hang the caliper from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
  • Make sure the brake hose is not stretched, twisted, or kinked.

Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware

  • Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver medium if the pads are stuck.
  • Remove the old stainless brake hardware clips from the bracket.
  • The hardware clips are thin metal guides that let the brake pads slide smoothly.

Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a 17mm socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Lift the caliper bracket away from the rotor.
  • Set the bracket on a clean work surface.

Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub by hand.
  • If the rotor is stuck, tap the rotor hat with a rubber mallet. The rotor hat is the raised center section of the rotor.
  • Do not hit the wheel studs with the mallet.
  • If rust is heavy, apply brake cleaner aerosol around the hub and let it soak for a minute.

Step 10: Clean the Hub Face

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust and dirt from the hub face.
  • The hub face is the flat metal surface the rotor sits against.
  • Wipe the area with brake cleaner aerosol and shop towels.
  • A dirty hub can cause brake pedal vibration.

Step 11: Install the New Rotor

  • Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner aerosol.
  • Wipe it dry with shop towels.
  • Slide the new rotor onto the wheel studs.
  • Install one lug nut by hand backwards to hold the rotor flat while you work.

Step 12: Prepare the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a wire brush to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
  • Install the new brake pad hardware clips by hand.
  • Apply a thin layer of disc brake lubricant to the hardware where the pad ears touch.
  • Do not put lubricant on the rotor or pad friction surface.

Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 17mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Torque to 123 Nm (91 ft-lbs)

Step 14: Compress the Caliper Pistons

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper pistons.
  • Use a C-clamp 6-inch or brake caliper piston compressor to slowly push the pistons fully back into the caliper.
  • A brake caliper piston compressor is a tool that pushes the caliper pistons back evenly so the new thicker pads will fit.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing. Stop if fluid gets close to overflowing.
  • Go slow to protect seals.

Step 15: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Apply a thin layer of disc brake lubricant to the back of each pad and the pad ears only.
  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
  • The pads should slide easily in the new hardware clips.

Step 16: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the bungee cord 18-inch and carefully lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Start both caliper slide bolts by hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the caliper slide bolts.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)

Step 17: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 16 on the opposite front brake.
  • Always replace front pads and rotors in pairs.

Step 18: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
  • Install each wheel onto the wheel studs.
  • Start all lug nuts by hand.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 19: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Tacoma until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs)

Step 20: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back against the new brake pads.
  • Do not drive until the pedal is firm.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed with the correct brake fluid listed on the reservoir cap.
  • ✅ Start your Tacoma and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm, not sink to the floor.
  • ✅ Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Bed in the new pads: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 30 mph to 5 mph. Do not come to a complete stop and hold the pedal during the bedding process.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles: Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs)
