This repair replaces the front brake pads and front brake rotors on your Tacoma. Worn pads and uneven rotors can cause squealing, grinding, vibration, longer stopping distance, or steering wheel shake while braking.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Tacoma on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels. Wheel chocks are wedges that stop the truck from rolling.
  • 🅿️ Set the parking brake before lifting the truck.
  • 🧤 Put on safety glasses and gloves before spraying brake cleaner or handling brake parts.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. Leave the cap loosely installed so pressure can vent when compressing the caliper pistons.
  • ⚠️ If the brake fluid reservoir is very full, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the pistons to prevent overflow.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about 1/2 turn while the tires are still on the ground.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen first, lift second.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the front center crossmember to lift the front of your Tacoma.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the proper front frame support points.
  • Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands.
  • Gently shake the truck by hand to confirm it is stable before working.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the frame as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Look at how the brake pads, hardware clips, caliper, and rotor are positioned before taking anything apart.
  • Use your phone to take a picture for reference.
  • The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper Slide Bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the two caliper slide bolts on the back of the caliper.
  • Slide bolts allow the caliper to move slightly as the brakes apply and release.
  • Support the caliper with a bungee cord from the suspension spring or upper control arm.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Remove the old brake hardware clips from the bracket by hand or with the flathead screwdriver.
  • Place the old pads in the drain pan to keep dust and debris contained.

Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the caliper bracket from the steering knuckle.
  • The bracket is the metal frame that holds the brake pads in place around the rotor.

Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub by hand.
  • If the rotor is stuck, tap around the rotor hat with a rubber mallet.
  • Do not strike the wheel studs.
  • If rust is heavy, spray the hub area with brake cleaner and let it soak briefly.

Step 9: Clean the Hub Surface

  • Use a wire brush to clean rust and scale from the wheel hub face.
  • Use brake cleaner and a brake parts cleaning brush to remove dust and debris.
  • The new rotor must sit flat against the hub to prevent brake vibration.
  • Clean hub equals smooth braking.

Step 10: Prepare and Install the New Rotor

  • Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove protective oil.
  • Wipe it dry with a clean shop towel.
  • Slide the new rotor onto the hub by hand.
  • Thread one lug nut on by hand to hold the rotor flat while you work.

Step 11: Service the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a wire brush to clean the brake pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
  • Install the new hardware clips from the front brake hardware kit by hand.
  • Apply a very thin layer of brake caliper slide pin grease only where the pad ears contact the hardware clips.
  • Do not get grease on the rotor or brake pad friction surface.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Torque to 123 Nm (91 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place the old inner brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use a brake caliper piston compressor tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • A piston compressor tool pushes the brake piston back evenly so the new thicker pads will fit.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing. If fluid rises too high, stop and remove a small amount carefully.

Step 14: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Slide the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
  • The pads should move smoothly in the hardware clips without forcing them.
  • If they bind, remove them and recheck the hardware clip position.

Step 15: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the bungee cord and carefully lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Start the two caliper slide bolts by hand.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the slide bolts.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Repeat on the Other Front Side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 15 on the other front wheel.
  • Always replace front brake pads and rotors in pairs.
  • This keeps braking even from left to right.

Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
  • Install each wheel onto the hub.
  • Thread the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 18: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift slightly and remove the jack stands.
  • Lower your Tacoma until the tires just touch the ground.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
  • Fully lower the truck and remove the floor jack.

Step 19: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Before starting or driving, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back into position against the new pads.
  • If you skip this step, the first brake pedal press may go very low.

Step 20: Check Brake Fluid Level

  • Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood.
  • Add DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below the MIN mark.
  • Install the reservoir cap securely.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Tacoma and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm, not spongy.
  • ✅ Check behind both front wheels for brake fluid leaks before driving.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe area. Make several gentle stops from low speed.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • ✅ Perform a basic bedding procedure: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 30 mph to 5 mph, allowing brakes to cool briefly between stops.
