🔧 Outback - Front Brake Pad & Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces the front brake pads and front brake rotors on your Outback. Worn pads or grooved rotors can cause squealing, vibration, longer stopping distance, or brake pedal pulsation.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Outback on level ground and shift the CVT into Park.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels. Wheel chocks are wedges that stop the vehicle from rolling.
  • 🅿️ Set the parking brake before lifting the front of the vehicle.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir level. If it is at MAX, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the calipers.
  • 🔩 Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle. Do not remove them yet.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still on the ground so the wheels do not spin.
  • Loose first, lift second.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Front

  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point to raise the front of your Outback.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands and give the vehicle a light shake to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Remove the Brake Caliper

  • Turn the steering wheel slightly to give yourself more room on the side you are working on.
  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
  • Slide the caliper off the rotor. The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the pads against the rotor.
  • Hang the caliper from the strut spring using a brake caliper hanger hook.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 5: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver medium to gently pry the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Notice the position of any wear indicator tabs before removing the pads.
  • Remove the old pad clips from the bracket by hand or with the flat-blade screwdriver medium.

Step 6: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use a C-clamp 6-inch to slowly push the piston back into the caliper bore. The piston is the round metal part that pushes the inner pad.
  • Compress slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir so it does not overflow.
  • If fluid rises too high, remove a little with a clean suction tool and wipe any spills with shop rags.

Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a 17mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the caliper bracket and set it on a clean surface.
  • These bolts may be tight, so keep the socket fully seated to avoid rounding the bolt heads.

Step 8: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub by hand.
  • If the rotor is stuck from rust, tap the rotor hat area with a rubber mallet.
  • Do not hit the wheel studs.
  • Use brake cleaner aerosol and shop rags to clean loose rust and dust from the area.

Step 9: Clean the Hub Surface

  • Use a wire brush to clean the flat wheel hub surface where the rotor sits.
  • The hub must be clean so the new rotor sits flat and does not cause vibration.
  • Wipe the hub with brake cleaner aerosol and shop rags.
  • Clean hub equals smooth braking.

Step 10: Install the New Rotor

  • Use brake cleaner aerosol and shop rags to clean both sides of the new rotor.
  • Slide the new rotor onto the wheel studs.
  • Thread one lug nut on by hand to hold the rotor flat while you work.

Step 11: Service the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a wire brush to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
  • Install the new clips from the front brake hardware kit by hand.
  • Use brake pad anti-squeal lubricant lightly on the pad ears where they contact the clips.
  • Do not get lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor surface.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 17mm socket and torque wrench rated 20-150 ft-lbs to tighten the bracket bolts.
  • Torque to 80 Nm (59 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Slide the new brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pads move smoothly in the new hardware clips.
  • If they bind, remove them and clean the contact areas again with the wire brush.

Step 14: Lubricate and Check the Slide Pins

  • Pull each slide pin out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Wipe the pins with shop rags.
  • Apply a light coat of brake caliper slide pin grease to each pin.
  • Slide pins are smooth pins that let the caliper move evenly as the brakes apply.
  • Reinstall the pins fully into the rubber boots.

Step 15: Reinstall the Brake Caliper

  • Remove the caliper from the brake caliper hanger hook.
  • Place the caliper over the new brake pads.
  • Start both caliper slide pin bolts by hand.
  • Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench rated 20-150 ft-lbs to tighten the slide pin bolts.
  • Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 15 on the other front brake assembly.
  • Always replace front pads and rotors as a pair so braking stays even.

Step 17: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
  • Install the wheels and hand-thread all lug nuts.
  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 18: Lower and Torque the Wheels

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Outback until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench rated 20-150 ft-lbs to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).

Step 19: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Before moving the vehicle, sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly 5-8 times.
  • The pedal may go low at first, then become firm. This seats the caliper pistons against the new pads.
  • Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the brake fluid level and top off only if needed with the correct brake fluid listed on the reservoir cap.
  • ✅ Start the engine and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm and consistent.
  • ✅ Check behind each front wheel for leaks or anything loose.
  • ✅ Perform a slow test in a safe area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Bed in the new pads: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 30-35 mph down to 5 mph, allowing a short cool-down between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless it is an emergency.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles: Torque to 120 Nm (89 ft-lbs).
