📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your 1500 on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires so the truck cannot roll.
  • Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly with a 22mm socket before lifting.
  • Lift the front of the truck with a floor jack under the front crossmember, then place jack stands under the frame rails.
  • If your 1500 is 4WD, the axle shaft may pass through the front hub. Keep it supported while the knuckle is loose.
  • A ball joint press is a large C-clamp tool that pushes the lower ball joint out and presses the new one in straight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use a 22mm socket and breaker bar to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the front wheel and place it flat under the frame as an extra safety backup.
  • Keep lug nuts together.

Step 2: Remove the Brake Caliper and Rotor

  • Use a 21mm socket to remove the front brake caliper bracket bolts.
  • Lift the caliper and bracket assembly off the rotor.
  • Use a bungee cord or mechanic wire to hang the caliper from the frame or spring area.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
  • Slide the brake rotor off the hub by hand. If stuck, tap the rotor hat lightly with a 3 lb hammer.
  • During reassembly, tighten the caliper bracket bolts to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

Step 3: Disconnect the ABS Wire and Brake Hose Brackets

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove any ABS wire or brake hose bracket bolts attached to the control arm or knuckle.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release plastic wire clips.
  • Move the wiring aside so it cannot be stretched when the knuckle moves.

Step 4: Disconnect the Tie Rod End

  • Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the outer tie rod end nut.
  • Use a 21mm socket to loosen and remove the tie rod end nut.
  • Use a ball joint separator to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  • If using a pickle fork, expect the rubber boot to be damaged. Only use it if replacing the tie rod or boot.
  • During reassembly, tighten the tie rod end nut to Torque to 75 Nm (55 ft-lbs), then install a new cotter pin.

Step 5: Support the Lower Control Arm

  • Place the floor jack under the lower control arm near the ball joint.
  • Raise the jack just enough to support the arm. Do not lift the truck off the jack stand.
  • This keeps the suspension from dropping suddenly when the ball joint separates.

Step 6: Separate the Upper Ball Joint

  • Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the upper ball joint nut.
  • Use a 21mm wrench or 21mm socket to loosen the upper ball joint nut a few turns, but do not remove it yet.
  • Use a ball joint separator to pop the upper ball joint taper loose from the knuckle.
  • Once loose, remove the nut by hand or with the 21mm wrench.
  • During reassembly, tighten the upper ball joint nut to Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs), then tighten further only as needed to install a new cotter pin.

Step 7: Separate the Lower Ball Joint

  • Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint nut.
  • Use a 24mm socket or 24mm wrench to loosen the lower ball joint nut a few turns.
  • Use a ball joint separator to separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  • Remove the lower ball joint nut fully with the 24mm socket.
  • Carefully lift the steering knuckle away from the lower ball joint stud.
  • During reassembly, tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 129 Nm (95 ft-lbs), then tighten further only as needed to install a new cotter pin.

Step 8: Remove the Upper Control Arm

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the upper control arm cam bolts before removal.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to remove the upper control arm mounting bolts and nuts.
  • Remove the upper control arm from the truck.
  • Install the new upper control arm by hand-starting the bolts first.
  • Do not fully tighten the upper control arm bolts until the suspension is at normal ride height.
  • Final tightening at ride height: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Press Out the Lower Ball Joint

  • Use a wire brush to clean dirt and rust around the lower ball joint area.
  • Use snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring if the old lower ball joint has one.
  • Set up the ball joint press kit with the correct receiver cup under the joint and press cup above it.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar to turn the press screw and push the old lower ball joint out.
  • Keep the press straight. If it tilts, stop and realign it.
  • Straight pressure prevents damage.

Step 10: Press In the New Lower Ball Joint

  • Clean the ball joint bore with a wire brush.
  • Position the new lower ball joint squarely in the bore.
  • Use the ball joint press kit to press the new joint in until fully seated.
  • Install the snap ring with snap ring pliers if the replacement joint uses one.
  • If the new joint has a grease fitting, use a grease gun to add suspension grease until the boot just begins to swell.

Step 11: Reinstall the Steering Knuckle

  • Guide the steering knuckle back onto the lower ball joint stud by hand.
  • Install the lower ball joint nut and tighten with a 24mm socket to Torque to 129 Nm (95 ft-lbs).
  • Install a new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers.
  • Connect the upper ball joint to the knuckle and tighten with a 21mm wrench to Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).
  • Install a new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers.

Step 12: Reconnect Steering, Wiring, and Brakes

  • Reconnect the tie rod end to the knuckle and tighten with a 21mm socket to Torque to 75 Nm (55 ft-lbs).
  • Install a new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers.
  • Reattach ABS wire and brake hose brackets using a 10mm socket.
  • Reinstall the brake rotor by hand.
  • Reinstall the caliper and bracket assembly with a 21mm socket.
  • Tighten the caliper bracket bolts to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Tighten the Upper Control Arm at Ride Height

  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-start the lug nuts.
  • Use the floor jack under the lower control arm to raise the suspension until the truck just begins to lift off the jack stand.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to tighten the upper control arm bolts to Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
  • This prevents the control arm bushings from being twisted at normal ride height.

Step 14: Reinstall the Wheel

  • Use a 22mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Lower the truck with the floor jack.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 22mm socket to tighten the lug nuts to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

  • ✅ Pump the brake pedal until it feels firm before driving.
  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for rubbing, popping, or binding.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first. Avoid highways until the truck feels stable.
  • ✅ Get a professional wheel alignment immediately after the repair.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 50-100 miles.
  • ✅ If greaseable ball joints were installed, grease them again at each oil change.
