📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Canyon on a flat, solid surface.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
- Spray penetrating oil on the upper and lower ball joint nuts, tie rod nut, and control arm fasteners.
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the upper control arm alignment cams before removal. These marks help you get close enough to drive to the alignment shop.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and Secure the Front End
- Use a 22mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts 1/2 turn.
- Use the floor jack to lift the front of your Canyon at the front frame area.
- Place jack stands under the frame rails.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Use the 22mm socket to remove the lug nuts and front wheels.
- Shake the truck lightly to confirm stability.
Step 2: Support the Lower Control Arm
- Place the floor jack under the outer end of the lower control arm.
- Raise the jack until it just supports the control arm. Do not lift the truck off the jack stand.
- This keeps the suspension controlled while separating the ball joints.
Step 3: Move Brake Hose and ABS Wire Aside
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any brake hose or ABS wire bracket bolts attached near the steering knuckle.
- Use a bungee cord to support the brake hose and ABS wire away from the work area.
- Do not pull, stretch, or hang weight from the brake hose.
Step 4: Separate the Outer Tie Rod
- Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the outer tie rod nut.
- Use an 18mm socket or wrench to loosen and remove the tie rod nut.
- Use a ball joint separator tool to separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
- Move the tie rod aside by hand.
Step 5: Loosen the Upper Ball Joint
- Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the upper ball joint nut.
- Use an 18mm wrench or socket to loosen the upper ball joint nut, but leave it threaded on a few turns.
- Use a ball joint separator tool to pop the upper ball joint stud loose from the steering knuckle.
- Once loose, remove the nut fully with the 18mm wrench.
Step 6: Loosen the Lower Ball Joint
- Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint nut.
- Use a 24mm socket or wrench to loosen the lower ball joint nut, but leave it threaded on a few turns.
- Use a ball joint separator tool to separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
- Remove the lower ball joint nut with the 24mm socket or wrench.
- Lift the steering knuckle off the lower ball joint stud and support it with a bungee cord.
- Do not let the knuckle hang by hoses.
Step 7: Replace the Upper Ball Joint Assembly
- On your Canyon, the upper ball joint is commonly serviced with the upper control arm assembly.
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the upper control arm alignment cams.
- Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the upper control arm mounting bolts and nuts.
- Remove the upper control arm from the truck.
- Install the new upper control arm with ball joint into the same position.
- Use the 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to snug the mounting bolts, aligning your paint marks.
- Final-tighten upper control arm mounting bolts with the suspension at normal ride height. Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Retainer
- Use a wire brush to clean dirt and rust around the lower ball joint.
- Use snap ring pliers to remove the lower ball joint retaining snap ring.
- If the snap ring is stuck, use penetrating oil and a small pry bar to free it carefully.
Step 9: Press Out the Lower Ball Joint
- Set up the ball joint press kit with the correct receiver cup under the lower ball joint.
- Use the ball joint press kit and a 22mm socket or wrench to press the lower ball joint out of the control arm.
- Keep the press straight. If it tilts, stop and reset it.
- Clean the ball joint bore with a wire brush after removal.
Step 10: Press In the New Lower Ball Joint
- Position the new lower ball joint squarely in the lower control arm.
- Use the ball joint press kit and 22mm socket or wrench to press the new joint fully into place.
- Install the new retaining snap ring with snap ring pliers.
- Confirm the snap ring is fully seated all the way around.
Step 11: Reconnect the Steering Knuckle
- Guide the steering knuckle onto the lower ball joint stud by hand.
- Install the lower ball joint nut by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 24mm socket and torque wrench. Torque to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
- Install a new cotter pin through the lower ball joint stud.
- Guide the upper ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install the upper ball joint nut by hand.
- Use an 18mm socket and torque wrench. Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
- Install a new cotter pin through the upper ball joint stud.
Step 12: Reconnect the Outer Tie Rod
- Insert the outer tie rod stud into the steering knuckle.
- Install the tie rod nut by hand.
- Use an 18mm socket and torque wrench. Torque to 60 Nm (44 ft-lbs).
- Install a new cotter pin through the tie rod stud.
Step 13: Reinstall Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the brake hose and ABS wire bracket bolts.
- Make sure the hose and wire are routed the same way as before.
- Turn the steering by hand left and right to confirm nothing stretches or rubs.
Step 14: Grease the New Ball Joints
- If the new ball joints have grease fittings, use a grease gun with chassis grease.
- Add grease until the rubber boot just begins to swell slightly.
- Do not overfill the boot.
Step 15: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install the wheels by hand.
- Use a 22mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the floor jack to lift your Canyon slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower the truck to the ground.
- Use a 22mm socket and torque wrench. Torque wheel lug nuts to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
