🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about one turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen wheels before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Truck
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your 1500 from the front frame area.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Shake the truck lightly to confirm it is stable before working underneath.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel
- Use a 22mm socket to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove the wheel and place it flat under the frame as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Support the Lower Control Arm
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the lower control arm near the ball joint.

- If the link stud spins, hold the stud with the correct wrench while turning the nut with the 18mm socket.

- Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the upper ball joint if equipped.
- Use a 21mm socket or 21mm wrench to loosen and remove the upper ball joint nut.
- Thread the nut back on a few turns by hand after loosening. This helps control the joint when it pops loose.
Step 8: Separate the Upper Ball Joint from the Knuckle
- Place the ball joint separator tool (specialty) between the upper control arm ball joint and the steering knuckle.

- Remove the upper ball joint nut fully with the 21mm socket.
- Move the upper control arm away from the knuckle.
Step 9: Remove the Upper Control Arm
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the upper control arm mounting bolts.
- Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to remove the upper control arm mounting bolts and nuts.
- Remove the upper control arm from the truck.
- Install the new upper control arm in the same orientation.
- Install the bolts and nuts finger-tight only for now.
- Do not final-tighten control arm pivot bolts while the suspension is hanging.
Step 10: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Nut
- Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint if equipped.
- Use a 24mm or 21mm socket if applicable is not listed, so inspect nut size first; for this procedure, use the listed 21mm socket only if it fits correctly.
- If the nut is 24mm, stop and add a 24mm socket before continuing.
- Loosen the lower ball joint nut, then thread it back on a few turns by hand.
Step 11: Separate the Lower Ball Joint from the Knuckle
- Use the ball joint separator tool (specialty) to separate the lower ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.
- Support the knuckle with one hand and remove the lower ball joint nut fully with the correct socket.
- Use a bungee cord to support the steering knuckle so it does not pull on the brake hose.
- Protect the brake hose.
Step 12: Remove the Lower Control Arm
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower control arm mounting hardware.
- Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, 18mm socket, and 18mm wrench as needed to remove the lower control arm mounting bolts and nuts.
- Use a pry bar 18-inch carefully to guide the lower control arm out of its mounts.
- Remove the lower control arm from your 1500.
Step 13: Install the New Lower Control Arm
- Place the new lower control arm into the frame mounts.
- Use the pry bar 18-inch only as needed to align the bolt holes.
- Install the new mounting bolts and nuts by hand first.
- Keep the lower control arm pivot bolts loose until ride height is set.
Step 14: Reconnect the Lower Ball Joint
- Guide the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle by hand.
- Install the new lower ball joint nut.
- Use the correct socket and torque wrench 250 ft-lb capacity to tighten the lower ball joint nut to OEM specification for your exact replacement hardware.
- If the nut uses a cotter pin, continue tightening only enough to align the cotter pin hole. Never loosen the nut to align the hole.
- Install a new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers.
Step 15: Reconnect the Upper Ball Joint

Step 18: Reinstall the Sway Bar Link and Brackets
- Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to reinstall the sway bar link nut if removed.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall the brake hose and ABS wire brackets.
- Check that the brake hose and ABS wire are not twisted, stretched, or rubbing.
Step 19: Reinstall the Wheel
- Place the wheel back onto the hub.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 22mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 20: Lower the Truck and Torque Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower the truck fully to the ground.
- Use a 22mm socket and torque wrench 250 ft-lb capacity to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).
