- Park your Frontier on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Spray penetrating oil on the ball joint nuts, control arm bolts, shock lower bolts, and sway bar end link nuts.
- Use a paint marker to mark the lower control arm cam bolt positions. Cam bolts are alignment bolts with off-center washers.
- Take photos before disassembly so you can compare hose, wire, and bracket routing later.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front lug nuts 1/2 turn.
- Keep the tires on the ground while loosening them.
- Loose first, lift second.
Step 2: Raise and Support Your Frontier
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the front crossmember to raise the front of your Frontier.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails.
- Lower your Frontier gently onto the jack stands.
- Use wheel chocks behind the rear tires if not already installed.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use a 21mm socket to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels.
- Slide the wheels under the frame as a backup safety measure.
Step 4: Support the Lower Control Arm
- Place the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the lower control arm near the lower ball joint.
- Raise the jack until it just supports the arm.
- Do not lift your Frontier off the jack stands.
Step 5: Disconnect Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the brake hose bracket from the control arm area.
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the ABS wire bracket if attached nearby.
- Move the hose and wire aside gently.
- Do not pull or stretch the brake hose or ABS sensor wire.
Step 6: Disconnect the Sway Bar End Link
- Use a 17mm socket and 17mm wrench to remove the sway bar end link nut from the lower control arm.
- Move the sway bar link aside by hand.
- If the stud spins, hold it with the 17mm wrench while turning the nut with the 17mm socket.
Step 7: Separate the Upper Ball Joint
- Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and remove the upper ball joint cotter pin.
- Use a 19mm socket or 19mm wrench to loosen the upper ball joint nut.
- Leave the nut threaded on a few turns for safety.
- Install the ball joint separator tool (specialty) between the steering knuckle and upper ball joint.
- Tighten the separator until the joint pops loose.
- Remove the nut fully with the 19mm socket.
- A ball joint separator is a press tool that pushes the tapered stud out without striking the knuckle directly.
Step 8: Remove the Upper Control Arm with Ball Joint
- Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to remove the two upper control arm mounting bolts.
- Remove the upper control arm from the frame pocket.
- Compare the new upper arm with the old one before installation.
Step 9: Install the New Upper Control Arm with Ball Joint
- Place the new upper control arm into the frame pocket.
- Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to install the mounting bolts finger-tight only.
- Insert the upper ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
- Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the upper ball joint nut to Torque to 78 Nm (58 ft-lbs).
- Use needle-nose pliers to install a new cotter pin.
Step 10: Separate the Lower Ball Joint
- Keep the lower control arm supported with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
- Use needle-nose pliers to remove the lower ball joint cotter pin.
- Use a 21mm socket or 21mm wrench to loosen the lower ball joint nut.
- Leave the nut threaded on a few turns.
- Use the ball joint separator tool (specialty) to separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
- If using a pickle fork ball joint separator (specialty), strike it with a dead blow hammer until the joint separates.
- Remove the nut fully with the 21mm socket.
Step 11: Remove the Lower Shock Bolt
- Use a 19mm socket and 19mm wrench to remove the lower shock bolt from the lower control arm.
- Leave the coilover shock assembly installed at the top.
- Do not loosen or remove the coil spring.
Step 12: Mark and Remove the Lower Control Arm Cam Bolts
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the cam washers if not already done.
- Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to remove the front and rear lower control arm cam bolts.
- Remove the lower control arm with the lower ball joint from your Frontier.
Step 13: Install the New Lower Control Arm with Ball Joint
- Place the new lower control arm into the frame mounts.
- Apply a light coat of anti-seize compound to the cam bolt shanks.
- Use a 21mm socket and 21mm wrench to install the cam bolts finger-tight.
- Align the cam washers with your paint marks.
Step 14: Connect the Lower Ball Joint
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the lower control arm until the lower ball joint stud fits into the steering knuckle.
- Install the lower ball joint nut by hand.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lower ball joint nut to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
- Use needle-nose pliers to install a new cotter pin.
Step 15: Reinstall the Lower Shock Bolt
- Line up the shock eyelet with the lower control arm mount using a pry bar 18-inch if needed.
- Install the lower shock bolt by hand.
- Use a 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten it to Torque to 155 Nm (114 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Reconnect the Sway Bar End Link
- Install the sway bar end link into the lower control arm.
- Use a 17mm socket, 17mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the nut to Torque to 98 Nm (72 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Reinstall Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Route the brake hose and ABS wire exactly as they were before.
- Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten small bracket bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
- Check that nothing rubs the tire, wheel, shock, or control arm.
Step 18: Set Suspension to Ride Height
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the lower control arm to raise the suspension to normal ride height.
- Ride height means the suspension is sitting where it normally sits when your Frontier is on the ground.
- This prevents the new rubber bushings from twisting and wearing out early.
Step 19: Final Torque the Control Arm Mounting Bolts
- Use a 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the upper control arm pivot bolts to Torque to 137 Nm (101 ft-lbs).
- Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lower control arm cam bolts to Torque to 155 Nm (114 ft-lbs).
- Keep the cam washers close to your paint marks until alignment.
Step 20: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Install the wheels and lug nuts by hand.
- Use a 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Raise your Frontier slightly with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum, remove the jack stands, and lower it to the ground.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts to Torque to 133 Nm (98 ft-lbs).

- Turn the steering wheel fully left and right while parked. Listen for clunks or rubbing.
- Drive slowly at first and check that steering feels normal.
- Recheck the visible ball joint nuts, cotter pins, control arm bolts, and brake hose brackets after the first short drive.
