🔧 Elantra - Engine Mount Replacement

Your Elantra uses three main powertrain mounts: the right-side engine mount, left-side transmission mount, and lower roll-stop mount. Replacing all three requires supporting the engine and transmission, removing each mount individually, and aligning the powertrain before tightening the fasteners.

Assumption: This procedure covers the stock 2.0L engine with either six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission; minor access differences are identified below.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 4-6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Never remove more than one mount at a time. The engine can shift or fall.
  • ⚠️ Use an engine support bar from above. A support bar spans the fenders and safely holds the engine with a chain.
  • ⚠️ Do not place a jack directly against the aluminum oil pan or transmission case.
  • ⚠️ If supplementary support is needed, place a wide wood block between the floor jack and a strong flat area of the powertrain.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands. Never work underneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the battery or working near the starter wiring.
  • ⚠️ Allow the engine and exhaust system to cool completely before beginning.
  • ⚠️ Mount fasteners must be started by hand. Never pull a misaligned mount into position using the bolts.

  • 🛞 Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear wheels.
  • 🔑 Switch the ignition off, remove the key, and keep it away from the vehicle.
  • 🔋 Record any saved radio settings. Disconnecting the battery may reset the clock and learned idle settings.
  • 📸 Photograph each mount and bracket before removal. Mark bracket positions with a paint marker.
  • 🔩 Keep the fasteners from each mount separated and labeled.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Open the hood and use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative clamp from the post and position it where it cannot spring back.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 6-inch extension to remove the battery hold-down.
  • Disconnect the positive terminal with a 10mm wrench, then lift out the battery while keeping it upright.

Step 2: Remove the Air-Cleaner Assembly

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to release the intake-hose clamp.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the intake duct or air-cleaner assembly by pressing its locking tab.
  • Use slip-joint pliers to release any spring clamp attached to the intake duct.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3-inch extension to remove the air-cleaner housing bolts.
  • Lift out the intake duct and air-cleaner housing. Cover the exposed throttle-body opening with a clean cover.
  • Do not let debris enter the intake.

Step 3: Remove the Battery Tray

  • Use a plastic trim-clip removal tool to release wiring retainers from the battery tray.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 6-inch extension to remove the battery-tray fasteners.
  • Lift out the tray to expose the left-side transmission mount.

Step 4: Raise and Secure the Vehicle

  • Use the hydraulic floor jack at the front-center lifting point to raise your Elantra.
  • Position both jack stands beneath the reinforced front-side support points, then lower the vehicle onto them.
  • Use a plastic trim-clip removal tool and 10mm socket to remove the necessary lower splash-shield clips and bolts.
  • Shake the vehicle gently to verify that it is stable before going underneath.

Step 5: Support the Powertrain

  • Position the 500kg engine support bar across the reinforced upper body edges according to the support-bar manufacturer's instructions.
  • Attach its chain to the factory engine lifting eye and remove slack until the engine's weight is supported.
  • Place the hydraulic floor jack and wide hardwood block beneath a strong, flat powertrain surface as secondary support only.
  • Raise the jack just enough to touch the surface. Do not lift or deform the oil pan.

Step 6: Replace the Right-Side Engine Mount

  • Use a paint marker to outline the mount and bracket positions.
  • Use a 17mm socket, breaker bar, and extension to loosen the mount-to-engine bracket nuts.
  • Use a 14mm or 17mm socket, as fitted, to loosen the mount-to-body bolts.
  • Adjust the engine support bar slightly until the fasteners turn freely without carrying engine weight.
  • Remove the nuts and bolts with the same sockets, then lift the mount from your Elantra.
  • Compare the replacement mount with the old mount. Its bolt pattern, locating pins, and bracket height must match.
  • Set the new mount into its locating points and start every fastener by hand.
  • Use the engine support bar to align the holes. Do not lever against the timing cover.
  • Use the torque wrench and correct socket to tighten the mount-to-body fasteners to 58.9-73.6Nm (43-54ft-lbs).
  • Use the torque wrench and 17mm socket to tighten the mount-to-engine bracket nuts to 63.7-83.4Nm (47-62ft-lbs).

Step 7: Replace the Left-Side Transmission Mount

  • Confirm that the engine support bar remains tight. Reposition the secondary jack and hardwood block beneath a strong transmission support point.
  • Use a paint marker to outline the transmission mount and bracket.
  • Move any wiring harness clips aside using the plastic trim-clip removal tool.
  • On the automatic transmission, use a 14mm socket and 6-inch extension to remove any accessible cable or harness support bracket obstructing the mount.
  • On the manual transmission, use a 12mm or 14mm socket to move the shift-cable support bracket only if it blocks mount removal. Do not alter cable adjustments.
  • Use a 17mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the mount-to-transmission fasteners.
  • Use a 14mm or 17mm socket, as fitted, to loosen the mount-to-body fasteners.
  • Adjust the support bar until all fasteners can be removed without binding.
  • Remove the mount and compare its locating points and bracket shape with the replacement.
  • Install the new mount and start all fasteners by hand.
  • Use the torque wrench and correct socket to tighten the mount fasteners evenly to 58.9-73.6Nm (43-54ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall any cable or wiring bracket with its original fasteners using the 12mm or 14mm socket.
  • Keep wiring clear of sharp mount edges.

Step 8: Replace the Lower Roll-Stop Mount

  • The roll-stop mount is the lower link that limits forward-and-backward engine movement.
  • From underneath, use an LED work light to inspect the mount orientation and photograph it.
  • Use a 17mm or 19mm socket, breaker bar, and extension to loosen the through-bolt and bracket bolt.
  • Adjust the floor jack very slightly until the bolts slide out without force.
  • Remove the bolts and lower the old roll-stop mount.
  • Position the replacement mount in the same direction and start both bolts by hand.
  • Use the torque wrench and correct socket to tighten the roll-stop fasteners to 107.9-127.5Nm (80-94ft-lbs).
  • Never use bolts to force alignment.

Step 9: Settle and Inspect the Mounts

  • Verify with the LED work light that every locating pin is seated and no mount is twisted.
  • Slowly release the hydraulic floor jack, then loosen the engine support bar until the mounts carry the powertrain normally.
  • Use the torque wrench and appropriate sockets to recheck every accessible mount fastener at its specified torque.
  • Remove the support bar, chain, jack, and hardwood block.

Step 10: Reinstall the Lower Shield

  • Position the lower splash shield against its locating tabs.
  • Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool by hand to install its clips.
  • Use a 10mm socket to install the shield bolts snugly. Do not overtighten the plastic retainers.
  • Raise your Elantra with the hydraulic floor jack, remove the jack stands, and lower it fully.

Step 11: Reassemble the Engine Compartment

  • Install the battery tray and use a 12mm socket to tighten its original fasteners securely.
  • Reconnect all wiring retainers using the plastic trim-clip removal tool.
  • Reinstall the air-cleaner housing and tighten its bolts with a 10mm socket.
  • Reconnect the intake duct and tighten its clamp with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Reconnect the intake electrical connector until its lock clicks.
  • Place the battery into its tray and install the hold-down using a 10mm socket.
  • Connect the positive battery terminal first and tighten it with a 10mm wrench.
  • Connect the negative terminal last and tighten it with a 10mm wrench.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the engine compartment for forgotten tools, disconnected plugs, or trapped wiring.
  • ✅ Start the engine with the transmission in Park or Neutral. Let it idle for three minutes without using the accelerator.
  • ✅ Watch the engine while a helper shifts slowly between Reverse, Neutral, and Drive with the brake firmly applied. A manual-transmission vehicle should be checked while gently engaging the clutch in first gear and reverse.
  • ✅ Stop immediately if the engine jumps excessively, a mount contacts the body, or you hear heavy knocking.
  • ✅ Take a short, low-speed road test. Check acceleration, deceleration, turning, and idle vibration.
  • ✅ Reinspect the mounts and surrounding wiring after the road test.
  • ✅ Reset the clock and saved audio settings if necessary.
  • ✅ The idle may fluctuate briefly while the engine computer relearns after battery disconnection.
